EDUCATION
Prospectus 2017 / 18
The course is definitely gearing me up for a higher level of education.
ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION
Access to Higher Education courses are designed to give a route to degree level study if you have been out of education for some time or do not have the entry qualifications for university.
We offer full and part time study programmes to help you to fit your studies around existing family and work commitments. Different study pathways also enable you to focus on the core subjects that you will need for further study specialisms such as Teaching, Midwifery, Social Work, Nursing or Science.
New this year we are also offering you a new way to study our Healthcare pathway. Blended learning combines online tutorials with on campus classes, giving you the flexibility to choose how, where and when you study.

“I previously studied A Levels at the age of 17, but dropped out because the timing wasn’t right for me. When I was ready to return to education, I was pleased to discover the Access course. I had very little knowledge of the benefits of taking this route to higher education, and feel it is preparing me well for the next step.
My reason for doing the Access course is so that I can go onto study Neuroscience Psychology at Durham University. The Access course has developed my skills in academic essay writing, presentations, handling large coursework assignments and how to reference accurately, all of which will be needed when studying at Degree level. It has also been interesting meeting new people through the course; the group is very diverse and everyone has their own reasons for studying the course.
One of the biggest challenges has been finding a way to balance other commitments around my studies. I work full time too, so I have had to manage my time carefully in order to meet deadlines. The tutors are very supportive and recognise the need to offer a flexible course that accommodates our busy lives.”

Grades for higher level study
In order to be able to progress on to an undergraduate degree at a British university, you will need to have achieved a minimum of a grade C in maths and English (and science if you wish to train as a Primary School Teacher). If you have not achieved these qualifications prior to enrolling onto the Access to Higher Education programme, you could qualify for our Pre-Access programme if you have the following:
» achieved a grade D (grade 3) in your GCSE retake subject,
» achieved a Level 2 in a respective Functional Skill
» achieved a Level 2 in maths and English in the Access to Higher Education Initial Assessment
Aged 19 or over? – You could use an Advanced Learning Loan to cover your course fees which doesn’t need to be paid back once you complete your degree!
What will my course cost?
The cost of studying the Access to Higher Education programme depends on your age and your existing qualifications.
If you are aged 19 – 23 and this is your first Level 3 qualification then you will not have to pay any course fees.
If you are aged 19 or over at the start of your course, you can pay for your course fees with an Advanced Learning Loan of £2,995. This loan is not means tested, and is only repayable once you have completed the course and you are earning over £21,000 per annum. In addition, when you complete a higher education degree, this loan will be cancelled and will not need to be repaid.
How do I apply for the course?
You can complete an application form online or in person at one of our campus locations. Please note that when applying for this course you will be asked to complete the full time application form (for full time and part time course options) to ensure that we collate the necessary, detailed information to process your application for this type of course.
Once we have received your application we will invite you in for an information session followed by an interview and initial assessment. It is helpful to have a good idea of your preferred university options prior to attending the interview so that we can make sure you are on the correct study pathway.
How can I find out more information?
If you are unsure about your suitability for this type of course, or you would like more information about the Advanced Learning Loan or our monthly payment plans, please give us a call on 0345 658 8990 and we will be pleased to help you.

A New Way of Learning
A course designed to fit your workand life commitments
We appreciate the pace of everyday life is getting
faster, which is why we’ve looked for new ways of
teaching - ways that can make it easier to study
alongside work and life commitments. We want
to provide courses that fit with students, rather
than the other way around.
Because of this, we’ve created an Access to Higher
Education: Health Professions programme which is
a blend of online and on campus study. The course
is available from September 2017.
On campus, classes provide the opportunity to learn
from experienced lecturers, who will be at hand to
answer questions and provide guidance on progress
and assessment. Classes will also be an opportunity
to interact, discuss and debate with fellow classmates,
helping apply theories to real world problems.
Online, a team of academics and experts teach the
course using video lectures, animations, exercises
and interactive case studies; all of which are delivered
through a bespoke virtual learning environment.
Lessons are available on demand.
