GrowingupinIndianawherebasketballisaffectionatelyreferredtoasHoosierhysteria,IlovethemonthofMarchandtheNCAAbasketball“MarchMadness.”ButthereisanotherkindofMarchmadnessofwhichyoumaynotbeaware–theannualcollegeratingsmadness.
Marchisthemonththateachpresident,provostandchiefenrollmentofficerre-ceivestheinfamousU.S. News and World Reportsurveytorateallotherinstitutionsofsimilarinstitutionaltypeinthenation.Thereceiptofthisreportisprecededbyanincrediblemarketingblitz.Ourmailboxesareliterallyfilledwithglossybrochures,personalizedletters,books,DVDs,andotheritemstogarnerattentionforspecificinstitutions.LastyearIreceivedasmallpinetreequitecleverlypackagedbysomeinstitution.Itapparentlydidnotworkasintended;Ivividlyrememberthetreebuthavenoideaofthenameoftheinstitution.
WhatexactlydoestheU.S. News and World Reportratingreport?Thelargestcompo-nentofaninstitution’sscorecomesfromthesurveysenttocollegeadministratorswhereweareaskedtoassignascorefrom1to5foreachinstitution.Wehavenodataonwhichtobasesucharating.Thus,theratingisprimarilyareportofreputation.TheAnnapolisGroup,aselectivegroupofthetopliberalartsinstitutionsinthenation(includinginstitutionslikeSwarth-more,Williams,Davidson,BrynMawrandAlma),hassuggesteditsmembersnotcompletethissurvey.
Thedata-basedpartofthescorecomesfrominstitutions’selfreports,partofwhichistakenfromtheannualfederalreporteachcollegemustfile.Thepres-suresresultingfromthisratingswarhasledtoquestionsabouttheintegrityofsomeinstitutions’practicesinreportingdata.Forexample,arecentWall Street Journalarticlecalledintoquestionthewaysomeinstitu-tionsreporttheirpercentofalumnigiving,akeyvariableintheU.S. Newsrating.

U.S. Newshascreatedproprietaryfor-mulastogeneratescoresformanyofthevariablesintheirratingsystem.Wearenotabletopredictourinstitutionalscores.Per-hapsofmoreconcernisthefactthatthesevariablesdonotdirectlyrelatetostudentoutcomes.WhileIagreethatthepercent-ageofalumniwhodonatetotheiralmamateriscritical,itisnotagoodmeasureofwhatislearnedintheclassroom.
Sohowcanalumni,prospectivestudentsandtheirparentsandothersdeterminethequalityofAlmaCollegeoranyotherschool?Ibelievetheanswerliesinstudentlearningandsuccessratherthaninstitu-tionalreputationandresources,andthereissomepromisingnewinformationavail-ableinthisarena.
AlargestudycalledtheNationalSurveyofStudentEngagement(NSSE)wasbegunseveralyearsagotoassessthosefactorsshowntomostrelatetostudentlearning.Thissurveylooksatfirst-yearandfourth-yearstudentsannuallytoassessfactorsliketheamountofreadingrequired,typeofas-signmentstheyaregiven,timespentindi-rectinteractionwithfaculty,applicationofclassroomlearningoutsidetheclassroom,etc.andhowdothesechangeasthestu-dentprogressesthroughcollege.ProvostMichaelSelmonreportedonAlma’sresultsontheseimportantmeasuresinthelastAccents (Winter2007issue).Asareminder,Almaisinthetopfivepercentnationallyamongallinstitutions(publicandprivate)onseveralofthesemeasures.
AnemerginggroupcalledCollegesofDistinctionwasidentifiedthroughnationalsurveysofprospectivestudents,guidancecounselorsandothersonfourareas:qualityofteaching,studentengagement,campusclimateandsuccessfuloutcomes.WhilehavingsomeofthesameflawsastheU.S. Newsratingsduetoemphasisonreputationreporting,atleastthisgroupfocusesonkeyvariablesthatmakeadifferenceinstudentlearning.IampleasedtoreportthatAlma

Collegewasselectedforthisrecognition,oneoffewerthan300nationally.
Finally,Iencouragepeopletoseekoutthetrackrecordofaninstitution’sgraduates.Whatdostudentsdowhentheygraduate?Didyouknowthat91percentoflastyear’sAlmaCollegegraduateswereplacedinjobsand/orgraduateorprofessionalschoolswithinsixmonthsinspiteofmanydoingsointhestatewiththehighestorsecondhighestunemploymentrateinthenation,dependingonthemonth?Thispercentageisactuallyabitlowerthanpreviousyears.
Alma’sgraduateandprofessionalschoolplacementrateisequallypositive.Ninety-onepercentoftheAlmaCollegepre-medicalstudentswereacceptedintooneormoremedicalschoolslastyear;thenationalaverageisslightlybelow47percent.Asimilarlyastounding90percentofourpre-lawstudentswereacceptedinlawschool,benchmarkedagainstanationalaveragesome30percentilepointslower.
Thebottomlineisnosinglemeasureofinstitutionalqualityissufficient;thebestmeasuresarethosethatdemonstratetheoutcomesofanAlmaeducationmorethantheinputs.Thenationalratingsareheretostaybecausetheysellmagazines.Andinfairness,theydoraiseimportantquestionsaboutinstitutionalqualityandaccountability.ThefallacyisinassumingthatU.S. News and World Report,oranyothersnapshotofthiscomplexprocesscallededucation,adequatelyassessesquality.
AsAlmaCollegeCampaignChairMartJohnsonsoaptlystatesinourcampaignvideo,“theproofisinourgradu-ates.”ThesuccessesofouralumniarethetrueandbesttestofAlmaCollege’squality.Iamsuretheclassof2007willcontinuetodemonstratethequalityofanAlmaedu-cationastheyjointheranksofAlmaalumni.

Atransformationistakingplaceinmanynewspaperofficesacrossthecountry,andKarenMagnuson’78is
oneoftheleadingvoicestrumpetingthechange.
“Userswantinformationonde-mand,”saysMagnuson,presidentoftheAssociatedPressManagingEditors,theinternationalassociationofnewspapereditorsintheUnitedStatesandCanada.“Before,newspa-persdeliveredinformationwhenitwasconvenientforthem.Now,wehavetodeliverinformation24/7.”
Twenty-fourhourcablenewsnet-worksalongwithtechnologicaladvancesincellphones,personaldigitalassistants(PDAs),Websitesandonlinecommunicationhaveforcednewspaperstochangethewaytheyapproachnewsdelivery.Foragrowingnumberofpeople,readingaprintednewspaperdelivereddailytotheirhomeisnolongeradequate.
Magnuson,executiveeditoroftheRochester Democrat and ChronicleinwesternNewYork,hasidenti-fiedinnovationashertoppriorityforAPME.Shepracticeswhatshepreaches;shehashelpedherownnewspaperadapttonewtechnologiesandmethodsofnewsdelivery.
“WehavecreatedtheRochesterInformationCenter,whichoffersinformationtoourusersinmultipleplatforms,includingtheWeb,PDAsandtelevision,”shesays.“Weworkwithourbroadcastpartnerstogetourinformationontelevision.WehavecreatedaminiatureTVstudiointhemiddleofournewsroomsoreport-erscancommentonbreakingnewsforourTVpartners.Wealsoprovidepodcastsandaweeklyvodcast—apodcastwithvideo.”
Newspapersmuststayontopofthesenewdeliverytechnologiesiftheyaretoremainrelevantinanincreasinglytechnologicalsociety,saysMagnuson.
“Wehavetobenimblewiththetimes,”shesays.“Editorsarefacingadramaticallychanginglandscape.Editorsneedtobemoreinnovativeinreachingouttonewaudiences.
“Willnewspapersdie?Notinmylifetime,”shesays.“Ilovenews-papers.Eventhoughnationalnewspaperreadershipisdeclining,ourcirculationisincreasing.Somepeoplecontinuetobeseven-daysub-scribers.Otherswanttopickupthenewswhentheywanttoreadaboutsomethingspecific.Therearealotofpassalongs—peoplewhogotothecoffeeshop,forexample,andpassaroundanewspaper.”
Refusing to take short cutsInadditiontoinnovation,Magnusonhasidentifiednewsroomdiversity,freedomofinformation,professionaldevelopment,andraisingmoneyasgoalsforAPMEin2007.
“Thenewspaperindustryatlargedoesnotaccuratelyreflectthediver-sityofthecountry,”saysMagnuson.“It’simportantfornewspaperstohavediversenewsroomsandtocoverallaspectsofourcommunities.”
Magnuson,whose30-yearjournalismcareerbeganatAlmaCollegewhereshewasmanagingeditorofThe Almanian,waselectedtotheAPME
boardin2000afterattendingAPMEconferencesandbecominginvolvedincommitteework.Aftertwoyears,shejumpedontheleadershipladderandhasservedasacommitteechair,boardsecretaryandvicepresident.
AsAPMEpresident,sheisfrequentlysoughtoutforcommentonnationalissuesrelatedtotheFirstAmend-mentandfreedomofinformation.Forexample,inFebruary2007shewasquotedinnewsstoriesaboutthereleaseoftheaudiotapesofformerWhiteHouseaideI.Lewis“Scooter”Libby’sgrandjurytestimony.
“Thisisavictoryforthepublic’srighttoknow,”Magnusonwasquotedinthenewspaperarticles.“Audioaddsalayerofinformationthatcitizenscanusetobecomemoreinformedaboutthewaythegovernmentoperates.”
Hercolleaguesdescribeherasener-getic,passionateanddriven.Inanarticleinthefall2006editionoftheAPME News,PhilCurrie,seniorvicepresident/newsforGannett,thepar-entcompanyfortheRochester Demo-crat and Chronicle,creditsherdeter-minationanddriveforhersuccess.
Karen Magnuson’s goals for APMEKaren Magnuson became the 70th president of the Associated Press Managing Editors in October 2006. The following are her goals for the organization.

Inspired byAll the President’s MenMagnusonjoinedtheDemo-crat and Chronicleasmanag-ingeditorin1999andwasnamedexecutiveeditorin2001.Priortothat,shewasmanagingeditoroftheWichita Eagle.ShealsoservedasmanagingeditoroftheValley TimesinPleasan-ton,Calif.,andeditoroftheOxnard Press-CourierinOxnard,Calif.
SheworkedforsixyearsinmiddlemanagementattheDaily News of Los AngelesandasawriterandbureaumanagerforsevenyearswithUnitedPressInternational.Shestartedwith
UPIasareporterinChicago;openedaUPInewsbureauinIowa;man-agednewsbureausinSpringfield,Ill.,andSaltLakeCity;andservedasaregionalexecutiveforCalifornia.
Herfirstfull-timejobaftergraduat-ingfromAlmaCollegewascityedi-torattheSturgis Daily News.
OriginallyfromtheDetroitarea,MagnusoncametoAlmaCollegebecauseofhighlanddancing.
“MymomwasborninScotlandandbroughtherhighlanddancingskillswithher,”shesays.“ShehadaschoolinDetroit.ItookupScottishdancing,competedintheHighlandFestival
GamesinAlmaandfellinlovewithAlmaCollege.”
SinceAlmaCollegedidn’tofferamajorinjournal-ism,MagnusondevelopedaProgramofEmphasisandtookadvantageofintern-shipopportunitiestolearnherprofession.
“Iwantedtostudyjour-nalism,butIrealizedthatpeopledon’ttypicallygotoasmallschooltostudyjour-nalism,”shesays.“MytheorywasthatIcouldgotoasmallschoollikeAlmaandreceivemoreindividualattentionandhavebetteropportunitiesforinternships.”
Thestrategyworked.Inad-ditiontoservingasmanagingeditorofThe Almanian,sheworkedasastudentwriterinthepublicrelationsoffice.ShealsohadpaidinternshipswiththeAlma Daily Record LeaderandMountPleasant Times-News.PartofherPOEwastakingjournalismclassesforasemesteratCentralMichiganUniversity.
“WhenIdecidedtobeajournalist,itwaswhenAll the President’s MenbyWoodwardandBernsteincameoutafterWatergate,”shesays.“Therewasaheightenedinterestinjournalism.IfeltmorecomfortableatAlmawiththeindividualattentionIreceived.”

Writing with a ‘Twist’KarenMagnusonisnottheonlyformerAlmanianeditorenjoyingasuccessfuljournal-ismcareer.KristinAllenBull’95cametoAlmaCollegeintentonbecominganEnglishteacher,butherexperiencewiththestudentnewspaperchangedherplans.
Today,Bullisafree-lancewriterandcontributortoTwist,aSundaytabloidmagazinepublishedbytheDetroit Free Press.
“Twistisamagazinethatfeaturesstoriesofinteresttowomen,especiallythoselivinginthemetroDetroitarea,”saysBull.Herstoriestypicallyfocusonpeople,healthissues,personalgrowthandrelationships.
HerworkfortheFree PressisthelateststopinBull’snewspapercareer.ShewascityeditorattheAdrian Daily Telegramandawriter,editorandgraphicartistfortheKansas City Star.
“IcametoAlmatostudyEnglishandbecomeateach-er,”saysBull.“Dr.[John]OttenhoffsuggestedIjoinThe Almanianinmyjunioryear,andItookhisadvice.Istartedasawriterandimmediatelylikedit–thewriting,meetingpeopleandlearningaboutthecom-munity.Ibecameco-editorduringmysenioryear.”

Whensheisn’tworking,Magnusonenjoyswinetasting,playingwithherdogs,boating,readingandspend-ingtimewithherhusband,Tod.Shestoppeddancingwhenshegraduatedfromcollegebutlooksbackonherdancingyearsfondly.

Former athlete, Almanian writer uses journalism skills to promote the outdoors
Asearlyaseighthgrade,MikeGnatkowski’78was
toldthathehadaknackforwriting.However,hisprimary
interestsinhisgrowing-upyearswerefishing,hunting
andplayingbaseball.
DuckhuntingonSaginawBay,nightlyflyfishingforaystotheAuSableRiverandchasingpheasantinthefieldssurroundingSaginawwereboyhoodritualsforhim.Hisearlyexposuretotheoutdoorsplantedaseedthatwouldlatergrowtoinspirehiseducationalandoccupationalvocations.
Today,Gnatkowskiisabookauthor,freelanceoutdoorwriterandpho-tographer.Hisfeaturearticlesandphotoshaveappearedonthecoversandpagesofhundredsofregionalandnationaloutdoormagazinesandnewspapers,includingDucks Unlim-ited,In-Fisherman,North American Fisherman,Great Lakes Angler,Wild-fowl,Game & Fish Publications,andmanyothers.
HehasbeenonthestaffofGreat Lakes Angler Magazineandhaswrit-tencolumnsforMichigan Out-of-Doors Magazine.
Inadditiontohiswriting,manyofhisaward-winningphotoshavebeenhonoredbytheMichiganOutdoorsWritersAssociationassomeofthebestintheirfield.
WhileattendingAlmaCollege,hediscoveredhisloveoftheoutdoorscouldbecombinedwithhiswritingandphotographyskills.
“Growingupasamiddleschoolandhighschoolstu-dent,someofmyteachersbroughtittomyattentionthattheylikedreadingwhatIwroteonessaytestsandsuch,”hesays.“Theyencouragedmetowriteformyhighschoolnewspaper.”
AftergraduatingfromSaginawEisenhowerHighSchool,Gnat-kowskicametoAlma,primarilytoplaybaseballandmajorinbiology.Ontheathleticfield,hecompletedastellarcareerbybeingnamedtotheMichiganIntercollegiateAthleticAssociationAll-Conferenceteamforthreeconsecutiveyears,waschosentheleague’smostvalu-ableplayerin1976,andreceivedAllAmericanrecognitionhissenioryear.
Academically,GnatkowskiwasencouragedbyoneofhisprofessorstodesignaProgramofEmphasisinbiologicaljournalismandoutdoorwritingthatincludedclassesasaninternatMichigan Out-of-Doors Magazine,studiesofoutdoormaga-zinemarkets,creativewritingandsubmittingmanuscriptsandphoto-graphstooutdoorpublications.
HewasfirstpublishedinMichigan Out-of-Doorsin1976whileastu-dentatAlma.HealsowroteforThe Almanian.
“InevercouldhavecombinedwritingwithbiologyatabiggerschoollikeIwasabletodoatAlma,”saysGnat-kowski,whoremembersJimTipton,DickRoeperandRonKappasinflu-entialfacultymembers.
Mostrecently,Gnatkowskihaspub-lishedWild Game Simple,abookofwildgameandfishrecipes.Thebook
featuresmorethan100recipestoprepareeverythingfromfishtoveni-sontofowlandincludessectionsoncleaninggameandfish,fielddressing,storageandfreezing,horsd’oeuvres,soups,chowdersandchilies.
Since1986,Gnatkowshhascon-solidatedhisvariousinterestsandbusinessendeavorstoformGnat’sEnterprisesInc.,whichincludesGnat’sRiverChartersandGnat’sCharterService.Consideredoneofthetopriverguidesinthecountry,GnatkowskihasguidedanglersonthePereMarquette,BigManisteeandMuskegonriversformorethan20years.Hespecializesincatchingtrout,steelheadandsalmon.
AlicensedU.S.CoastGuardcaptainsince1998,healsooffersGreatLakeschartersfortrout,salmonandsteel-headoutofLudington.

Elsenheimer,usinghispennameJimEdwards,haswrittenanin-novativebookabouttheconnectionsbetweencyclingandlife.Like Riding a Bike: A Cycle Logical Exploration of Life(Xlibris,2006)exploreshisexpe-riencesincyclingandextendsthemtodiscussuniversaltruthsaboutlife.
Hisinsightsrelatewelltootherpursuits,includingper-sonalgrowth,relationshipsandevenbusiness.Hefindslifelessonsinthemostcommoncyclingexperiences,beginningwithbalance–thebasisforbothcyclingandliving.

“Thereweren’tanypersonaldevelopmentbooksbasedoncycling,”explainsElsenheimer,“soIdecidedtogiveitago.Istartedbycapturingexperiencesandthoughtsfrommytimespentcycling.WhatIendedupwithissomethingratheroriginalthatisinstructive,inspirationaland,mostimpor-tantly,practical.”
Alifelongcyclist,Elsenheimerisanaccomplishedrunner,duathleteandtriathletewhoconsistentlyplacesatthetopofhisagegroupinlocalevents.Hisraceexperiencesincludecompetingintheduathlonnationalchampionshipsandrun-ningtheBostonMarathon.
Apsychologymajor,Elsenheimercompletedseveralphi-losophyandreligiousstudiescoursesatAlma,providinghimwithabroadunderstandingoflifeperspectives.

TheAlmaCollegeprofessorofphysics,though,hashiseyessetonaspecifickindofstar—theluminoushot,blueonesfoundinthespiralarmsofgalaxiesliketheMilkyWay.
Bluestarsarehot,extremelyrare,short-livedandmassive—asmuchas60timesasmassiveastheEarth’sSun.Thereareanestimated200,000bluestarsintheMilkyWay—adropinthebucketcom-paredtotheapproximately400billionstarsinall.
Reedhasdevelopedtheworld’slargestcomprehensivedatabaseonthesehot,bluestars.Thedatabasecontainsmorethan60,000linesofinformationonthecharacteristicsofcloseto19,000indi-vidualstars,includingtheirpositionsintheskyandphotometricandspectraldatathatareimportanttoastronomers.
“Thesearestarsinthebluishspiralpat-ternsofthegalaxy,”saysReed.“Thebluishcolorisduetoveryhighsurfacetemperatures.Theyareextremelyrareandlivetoonlyabout20millionyears,comparedtooursun,whichisfivebillionyearsold.
“Bluestarshave10to60timesthemassofthesun.Themoremassastarhas,thequickeritgoesthroughitslifecycle.After20millionyears,theybecomesupernovas,”hesays.
AstronomersfromallovertheworlduseReed’sonlinedatabase,includinglargegroupsofbluestarresearchersinArgentinaandFrance.Bluestarshavevalueinstudiesofgalacticstructureandchemistry,regionsofstarbirth,andsupernovaphysics.
Reedhasdevotedmorethan15yearstobuild-ingthedatabase.Hemonitorsastronomyandphysicsresearchjournalsfornewinformationaboutbluestars,whichheaddstohisdatabaseonaweekly,ifnotdaily,basis.
“Istartedasagraduatestudent,whenIrealizedthatnobodyhascompiledalltheinformationthatisknownaboutthesestars,”hesays.“Thisprojectkindofgrewonme.Researcherswhoareinterestedinthesekindsofstarshavetoldmetheyusethedatabaseandpublishresearcharticlesbasedontheinformationinthedatabase.
“BeingataplacelikeAlmaCollegeisidealbecauseIcanworkonthedatabasewhileIteach,”hesays.“Idon’tneedvastresearchgrantstocontinuemywork.”
Reed,anAlmafacultymembersince1992,teachesarangeofcourses,fromfreshman-levelphysicstosenior-levelquantummechan-ics.Hehaspublishedmorethan80researchpapersinpeer-reviewedphysicsandastrono-myjournals.HehasaPh.D.inphysicsfromtheUniversityofWaterloo,Canada.
“Oneofthethingsthatinterestedmeinas-tronomywasthatitcoverstheextremerangeofphysics,”hesays.“Youneedtoknowaboutatomsandhowtheyreact,andyouneedtoknowaboutprocessesthathappenatthenuclearlevel.Astronomyintegratesvarioustimescales,fromthebillionyearlifecyclesofstarstothesupernovaexplosionsthatoccurinasinglesecond.Itinvolvesanextremerangeofphysics,motion,timeandenergy.”
Reedalsoistheauthorofanewtextbook,Quantum Mechanics,writtenespeciallyforjunior-levelstudentsatsmallcolleges.Thetextbook,whichincludes425pages,10chap-ters,anda200-pagesolutionsmanual,willbepublishedlaterin2007.

Aheartygroupofindividualsknownasthru-hikersannuallytestthelimitsofhumanendurancewhentheyembarkonaspring-through-summerhikefromGeorgiatoMaineontheAppalachianTrail.
JohnDavis,Alma’sDanaProfessorofExerciseandHealthScience,andateamofstudentsareinvestigatingthephysiologicalandnutritionalchallengesthatthru-hikersface.
Testingincludesanumberofphysiologicalmeasures,includingheartrate,bloodpressure,aerobicfitness,bodycompositionandmusclestrength.
“ThehikealongtheAppalachianTrailisoneofthetoughestultra-enduranceactivitiesthatoccurs—hikingdayafterday,about15to20milesaday,forfourtofivemonths,”saysDa-vis.“I’vealwaysbeeninterestedinthelimitsofhumanperformanceandthekindsofchangesthattakeplaceduringthiskindofenduranceactivity.Thisresearchisagoodfitformyaca-demicinterest.”
Davisbeganpre-testinginMarchatthestartofthetrailinDahlonega,Georgia,locatedaboutanhournorthofAtlanta.InMay,DavisandsevenAlmaCollegestudentsbegantestingthru-hikersalongthetrail.Post-testingisplannedinSeptember.Hehopestotestupto50subjectsaspartoftheproject.
“Iexpecttofindthatpeoplegetinbettershapeastheygoalong,thattheiraerobicfitnessgoesupandtheylosebodyfat,”saysDavis,whoisonasabbaticalfromteachingtofocusonhisresearch.
“Thereareseveralotherfactorstostudy,”hesays.“Forexample,aretheredifferencesinmaleandfemalephysiologicalresponses?Also,only20percentofthepeoplewhostartthehikefinish.Whydopeoplestop?Iwanttolookatattrition.Thereasonsforstoppingmaynotalwaysbephysiological.Somemaystopforpsychologicalorpersonalreasons.”
Davisalsowillconsiderage.Mostthru-hikersfallinthe25-and-underor50-and-olderagegroups.
“Todate,nostudieshavecomprehensivelystudiedthephysiologicalandnutritionalchallengesthatthru-hikersface,”saysDavis.“Thisresearchwillbehelpfultofuturelongdistancehikersandthescien-tificcommunity.Itwillhelpusanswerthequestion:Howfarcanhumanspushthemselves?”

Sherarelymissesafootballgame,concertorplay.Shestillconnectswithmanyofthe240studentsshehasemployedintheMailroomandPrintingCenterovertheyears.SherepresentstheCollegeonnumerouscommunitygroupsasanactivevolunteer.
“IgotothesethingsbecauseIlikeworkingatAlmaCollege,”saysPeck.“Whenyoulikeyourjob,youwanttobeconnected.Youjustfeelapartofit.Ifit’sjustajobwithapaycheck,itdoesn’tmakeyouwhole.
“Ilovemyjob,”shesays.“Ireallywillmissit.Ilikethevariety,thestudents,thepeoplewhocomeintotheoffice.Everybodyhassome-thingtoaddtotheinstitution.”
BornandraisedonafarmoutsideofAlma,RosefirstlearnedaboutajobopeningattheCollegewhileshewasworkingatGraphAdsinAlmainthespringof1962.ShelivednextdoortoformerfacultymemberFlorenceKirk,whotoldRoseaboutanopeningforasecre-taryintheDuplicatingCenter,whichlaterbecametheCopyCenterandisnowtheMailingandPrintingCenter.
“IinformedherthatIhadnotcompletedadegree,”saysRose.
“Herremarkwas,‘youaresmartenoughtoworkatAlma,anddon’tletanyonetellyoudifferent-ly.’Afewdayslater,Imusteredupenoughcouragetopickupanapplication,fillitoutandreturnit.OnJuly30,1962,Iwashired.”
HerfirstbosswasVicePresidentforFinanceStephenMeyer,whowas“stern,honestandyouknewwhereyoustoodwithhim.Hewasaveryfairman,”saysRose.
“AlmaCollegein1962wasarealfamily,”sherecalls.“Itwassmall-erthen,withabout500students.RobertSwansonwaspresident,andeverybodylovedSwannie.”
Shehasreceivednumerouscita-tionsforherworkbothatthecol-legeandinthecommunity.Shewasnamed“secretaryoftheyear”atAlmaCollegein1988andhaschairedtheCollege’sCommunityFundDriveforseveralyears.ShealsohasbeenasororitymomforAlphaTheta.
TheRosePeckEndowedSchol-arshipwascreatedinhonorofheryearsofserviceatAlmaCollege.Alreadyfullyfundedby129alumniandfriends,thefirstscholarshipwenttoEmilyBoer-man,asophomorelastfall.
Withretirementonthehorizon,Roseispreparingforthenextstageinherlife.

Dr.JohnGibson,a2007retiree,hassharedhisexcite-mentaboutphysicssincehefirstbeganteachingatAlmaCollegein1968.Throughtheyearshehascontinuallyupgradedandrevisedhislecturesandlabstomakethemmoremodernsothathisstudentswouldknowandunderstandphysics.
Hehastaughtandencouragedmanystudentstolearnhowtooperateamateurradioandbecomequalifiedfortheir“ham”radiolicense.Hisinterestinroboticsledtocollaborationwithastudentin1982tobuildanexperi-mentaltransmobileknownas“e.t.2,”notthemorepopular“extraterrestrial”fromthemovieE.T.thatwasreleasedafewyearslater.
Workingwithacolleagueinmorerecentyears,thetwocreatedadeviceulti-matelyknownasthe“flinger”toenablepeopleconfinedtoawheelchairtheabilitytoshootfreethrowsinabasketballgame.
ANationalScienceFoundationgrant,whichGibsonwrote,resultedintheCollegeobtainingasatellitereceivingsystem.Almawasoneofjustafewplacesnationallytohavethesystemandhaveitavailabletostudents.
GibsonhasbeentherecipientoftheOutstandingProfes-sorintheNaturalSciencesdivisionthreetimes,andre-ceivedtheBarlowAwardforFacultyExcellencein2004.

Alma’sSIFEgroupworkedon10projectsbothonandoffcampusthroughoutthepastacademicyear.Atregionalandnationalcompetitions,SIFEteamspresenttheresultsoftheireducationaloutreachprojectsandcompetetodeterminewhichteamwasmostsuccessfulatcreatingeconomicopportunityforothers.Projectsandpresenta-tionskillsarejudgedbyFortune500seniorexecutives,whobasetheirdecisionsoncreativity,innovationandeffectiveness.
ThemissionofAlmaCollegeSIFEis“toraisethestandardoflivinginmid-MichiganbyteachingtheprinciplesoffreeenterprisethroughavarietyofeducationaloutreachprogramsdevelopedandimplementedbydedicatedAlmaCollegestudents,”saidLemmon.

DavidProvost,thecurrentchairoftheBoardofTrusteesand1976
alumnus,remembershisfatherasaper-soncommittedtohelpingpeopleinneed.
“IwasborninKorea,wheremyfatherwasamissionary,”saysProvost.“Inthe1960s,heraisedmoneytobuyabank-rupthighschoolandcreateaChris-tian-basedschool.Now,itisoneofthelargesthighschoolsinSouthKorea,withmorethan3,000students.
“Hespentthemajorityofthetimeraisingmoneyforscholarships,becauseinKoreastudentshavetopaytogotojuniorandseniorhighschool.Heraisedmoneyandsponsoredkids.Thatwashiseducationalinfluence.Hededicatedhisentirelifetopeoplewhoneededhelp,”hesays.
Tohonorthememoryofhisfather,ProvostestablishedtheRay-mondProvostEndowedScholarshipatAlmaCollegetoassistthechildrenofPresbyterianandMethodistpastorsaswellasstudentsactiveintheirchurchyouthgroups.
“AlmaCollegeprovidedmetheopportunitytoattendthroughscholarships,”saysProvost.“IfeelstronglythatitisimportanttosupportAlmaCollege,andIalsowantedtoprovideascholarshipforthechildrenofministers.”
Provostgrewupinhisfather’schurchinMackinawCity,theChurchoftheStraits.Hisfatherpassedawayin1997.
“Oneofhiswisheswastobeburiedinhismissionfield,”hesays.“Astheoldestson,ItookhimbacktoKoreatobeburied.”
ProvostisaregularcontributortohisalmamaterandsupporteroftheOpenWindowsCampaign.HenevermissesgivingannuallytotheAlmaFundandfinanciallysupportsavarietyofotherinitia-tives,includingtheDavidProvostStrategicAdvancementFund.
“ThestrengthofourdegreeisdirectlyrelatedtothestrengthoftheCollege,andsoalumnisupportisnecessarytoassurethatAlmaCollegeremainsoneofthebestinstitutionsintheStateofMichi-gan,”hesays.“SincemanyalumnireceivedscholarshipstoattendAlma,wehaveanobligationtohelpfuturestudentsshareinthesamequalityexperienceswehad.”
ProvostischairmanandCEOofThePrivateBankinBloomfieldHills.HehasservedontheAlmaCollegeBoardofTrusteessince1994.Heandhiswife,Christine,liveinBirmingham.
TheOpenWindowscampaign,thelargestplannedfund-raisingeffortinAlmahistory,continuestoprog-ress,withtotalfundsreceivedasofMay10,2007,at$24,501,495,whichrepresents70percentofthe$35.25milliongoal.

F.MartinJohnson,knownas“Mart”tohisfriendsandcolleagues,hasservedontheboardsince1975.HealsochairstheOpenWindowsCampaignCabinet,agroupofvolunteersprovidingleadershipfortheCollege’slargestfund-raisingeffort.
Heandhiswife,Dottie,haveprovidedconsistentfinan-cialsupportfortheCollegethroughouttheyears—anacthedescribesasanobligationaspartofhisroleasamemberoftheBoardofTrustees.
“Trusteesneedtoprovidefinancialsupporttotheinstitu-tion,”hesays.“IhavetakenthepositionthatIhavetohelprepaythecostprovidedbysomeoneelsewhomadeitpossiblefortheCollegetoexist.ThegenerationsofgivingbyothersmakeitpossibleforyoungpeopletoattendAlma.Somepeoplecan’tgiveatthesamelevelofothers,butthere’sarealobligationfortrusteestofinan-ciallysupporttheinstitution.”
JohnsondidnotattendAlma.Hemajoredinengineer-ingatStanfordUniversityandhasamaster’sdegreefromtheHarvardBusinessSchool.Despitenotattend-ingAlma,hefeelsaspeciallinktotheCollege.HegrewupinaPresbyterianfamily.Hissister,EstherJohnsonFrandsen,attendedAlma,andhismotherandfatheralwaysweresupportiveoftheCollege.
“Iwasalwaysinterestedineducation,”hesays.“Icon-sideredtheopportunitytobeinvolvedincollegegover-nanceatAlmaasabighonor.
“IwasveryluckytospendtimewithformerpresidentBobSwanson;hewasaremarkableperson,”saysJohn-son.“OscarRemick,AlanStoneandSaundraTracyalsohavebeenimportanttomeinthattheyhelpedmeinmyowngrowthasamanagerofpeople;theygavemeacloselookatotherleadershipstyles.AndthetrusteesIhaveservedwithhavebeenremarkablepeople.”

Lastsummer,Johnsonwasaskedtoparticipateinthepro-ductionoftheOpenWindowscampaignvideo.ShootingtookplaceonawarmsummerdayoutsideoftheHoodBuilding.Itwashisfirst“acting”experiencesincehighschool.ThevideocanbeviewedontheCollege’sWebsite.
“IwasinaplayatGrandHavenHighSchool,thoughitwasnotamajorrole,”laughsJohnson.“Myteachercameuptomeaftertheperformanceandsaid,‘Man,youlooklikeastickonstage.’Thatendedmycareerrightthere.”
JohnsonservesasaspokesmanfortheCampaignbecausehebelievesintheneedtoincreasetheCollege’sendowment.
“Weneedmoneytobeinvestedsothatthereareresourcestokeeptheinstitutiongoing,”hesays.“DottieandIsupporttheCenterforResponsibleLeadership—that’swherewehavedesignatedourgifts.ButIcanthinkof25otherthingsthatalumnicansupport.Weneedtohavetheseresourcestoimproveourfacilitiesandprovideen-hancededucationalopportunitiesforourstudents.”

AttendinghomecomingisanannualoccurrenceforalumniDave’60andPat’59Hubbard.Theyarefa-
miliarwiththetypicalhomecomingroutineandactivities.
ButsomethingdifferenthappenedathomecominglastOctober.TheyattendedthecampaignkickoffconcertbytheAlmaCollegePercussionEnsemble.
“We’vealwayscomebackforhomecoming,butthiswasthefirsttimethePercussionEnsembleperformedontheFridaynightbeforehomecomingSaturday,”saysPat.“Wewereveryimpressed.Wedidn’tknowthatthestudentmusiciansmadesuchagreatsound.Wewereimpressedwiththedirectorandtheenthusiasmoftheyoungpeople.”
TheperformancepromptedtheHubbardstodonateasignificantgifttoAlmaCollegeaspartoftheOpenWin-dowsCampaigntosupportthepurchaseofnewpercus-sioninstruments.

ThepurposeoftheGeorgeGazma-rarianEndowedGlobalExperienceProgramistoexpandopportunitiesforbusinessadministrationmajorsandminorstoexperienceforeignstudy.Todate,morethan50studentshavereceivedsupportfromtheen-dowedprogram.
“TheprogramreflectsProfessorEmeritusGazmararian’sdeepcom-mitmenttoglobaleducationandthepreparationofstudentstounder-standandappreciateothercultures,”saysCarolHyble,vicepresidentforadvancement.
DuringhistenureatAlma,Gazma-rarianwasdirectoroftheinter-nationalbusinessadministrationprogramhehelpedestablishin1981.HetaughtnineSpringTerminter-nationalbusinesscourses,twoyearsinParisandsevenyearsinBrussels.EighttimesAlmaseniorselectedhimtheoutstandingprofessorinthesocialsciencesdivision.
TheglobalexperienceprogramsupportsSpringTerminternationalstudyaswellassummer-directedstudyorseniorprojectsthatincludeinternationalstudy.
Theendowedfundwasmadepos-siblebydonationsinGazmararian’shonorfrommorethan1,000alumnifollowinghisretirementin1996.Thefundswereconvertedtotheglobalexperienceprogramin2004.

“It’sjustahugelist,”saysZerbe.“Already,theinstrumentswehavereceivedhavetransformedthegroup.Thestudentsareperformingatadif-ferentlevel.Theycancreateahigherlevelofsoundbecauseofthequal-ityoftheinstruments.Thestudentswerereadytomovetoanotherlevelofperformance,butwedidn’thavetheinstruments.It’sreallyamazing.Wearethrilled.”
ThePercussionEnsemblehasper-formedinconcertsandfestivalsthroughoutthecountry.Ensemblemembersperformacombinationoftraditionalchambermusicaswellasjazz,steeldrumandworldmusic.ThegroupwillperformJuly27and28attheCentrumJazzFestivalatPortTownsend,Washington.Almaistheonlycollegegroupthathasbeeninvitedtoperformatthispro-fessionaljazzfestival.
TheHubbards,nowretired,havedualresidencesinCheboyganandEnglewood,Fla.DavehasadegreeinfinanceandwasvicepresidentforfinanceatEdison-SaultElectricinSaultSte.Marie.Pat,whohasade-greeinelementaryeducation,taughtinLivonia,RoyalOakandMonroeandsubstitutetaughtinSaultSte.Ma-rie.ShealsowasdirectorofChristianEducationatCentralUnitedMethod-istChurchattheSault.

WhenIwalkedintotheHoodBuildingtoday,itbroughtmebacktothedayswhenIspenttimeinthereasaprospectivestudenttoAlmafouryearsago.Somuchhaschangedformesincethen.IfeellikeIbeganschoolhereasachild,andnowIwillgraduateinsixweeksasanadult.Allofthepamphletsandspeechesalwaystoldmethatan“AlmaExperience”wouldallowmetogrowinareasfarbeyondacademics,andwhileIadmitIhaddoubtsaboutthisinitially,Inowhavebecomelivingproofofthisphenomenoneveryonespokeof.
