Projected Starting Pitcher Junior left-hander Ryan Kennedy (Punta Gorda, Fla.) is slated to open on the mound against Maryland. Kennedy has a 5-7 overall record and 4.16 earned run average. He has struggled in ACC games, carrying a 1-6 record and 6.07 ERA. The team, however, has scored an average of 2.9 runs during his seven losses. In non-conference games, Kennedy is 4-1 with a 1.23 ERA. In his last outing, Kennedy pitched 6.1 innings against Wake Forest on Thursday night. He scattered eight hits and allowed just two runs, but did not get a decision in the 6-3 Tech win. Kennedy entered his start at Georgia Tech with a 3.34 overall ERA, only to surrender nine runs on eight hits in just 0.1 innings before leaving the game. Prior to that, he had pitched into the seventh inning of five straight games and made it to the sixth in all but one of his 12 starts. Kennedy picked up his first ACC win and his second ACC Pitcher of the Week award with a four-hit shutout at Duke on May 1. He fanned 10 and walked just one in the 2-0 win to give Tech its first shutout and its first series win in ACC play. Kennedy started Tech's opening game against Maryland and pitched six innings before leaving the game with the Hokies trailing 4-1. He allowed just five hits, and all four runs scored against him were unearned. Kennedy did not figure in the decision after Tech tied the game in the top of the eighth, only to lose in the bottom of the inning.

The Other Starters Right-hander Jake Chaney (Blowing Rock, N.C.) is 5-5 with a 5.74 earned run average. He is the lone senior on the Tech pitching staff. Chaney has appeared in a total of 16 games with nine starts. In his last start on Friday, he took a two-run lead into the eighth inning only to see Wake Forest put four runs on the board in the inning. Chaney pitched 7.1 innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits. At Georgia Tech, he pitched 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs (five earned) on five hits during an 11-1 loss. He struck out three men and walked five. He picked up a win as a starter at Duke and earned a win in relief at N.C. State. As a starter, Chaney is 2-5 with a 6.50 ERA. During his seven relief appearences, Chaney is 3-0 with a 3.48 ERA. Sophomore right-hander Greg Fryman (Gibsonia, Pa.) has appeared in a total of 14 games with a 3-2 record and 6.71 earned run average. His last outing was Saturday when he started and went seven innings against Wake Forest, but did not figure in the decision. He scattered seven hits, allowing three runs (two earned). He pitched the opening game at Georgia Tech, going three innings before leaving the game. He gave up five runs on seven hits, struck out a batter and walked two. Prior to that game, he worked 5.1 innings and picked up a win against Clemson. Fryman allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out three and walked two against the Tigers. Fryman is 2-2 as a starter, with a win against Liberty in which he allowed just one earned run (three total) in 6.2 innings. His other loss came in a start against Miami.

The Wild Card Nicky Bowers (Stuart, Va.), who moved into the starting rotation for the first time this season, has returned to action after a five-week layoff with a sore shoulder. Bowers pitched well early but had little to show for it with a 1-4 record. In three relief outings last week, he picked up two wins against Wake Forest. Teams are batting just .239 against him.

Short Hops ^^Chris Stanton (Centreville, Va.) missed two games last week after injuring a finger in an off-field accident. Stanton returned to action in Tech's final regular season game against Wake Forest, but was limited to designated hitting duties. It is likely to remain that way in the ACC Championship, with backup catcher David Londrey (Richmond, Va.) taking over at first base.

^^ Stanton picked up his 12th career triple at Georgia Tech, moving into sole possession of third place on Tech's all-time list. The Hokies' career leader in triples is Kevin Barker (1994-96) with 17, followed by David Dallas (1989-92) with 14. Stanton also ranks fourth in career stolen bases at Tech with 83.

^^ Virginia Tech enters the ACC Championship with nearly as many triples as home runs. The Hokies, who have posted 14 triples in their last 21 games, currently have 21 three-base hits for the season to go with 22 homers. ^^Junior outfielder Sheldon Adams (Big Stone Gap, Va.) has become one of the most consistent hitters in the Hokies' lineup this season. After striking out a team- high 47 times a year ago, Adams has cut his strikeouts to 22 this year and has carried a .352 batting mark (38-108) over his last 31 games. ^^Sophomore Nate Pa rks (Salem, Va.) is the only player on the Tech squad who has started every game this season.

^^Virginia Tech is among the national leaders in double plays turned per game. The Hokies have turned a total of 58 double plays during their 50 games, an average of 1.16 per game. Tech ranked sixth last week. Thirty-four of those double plays have come in ACC play, for an average of 1.31 a game.

Virginia Tech/ACC Tournament

^^Freshman Matt Hacker (Glen Allen, Va.) has proven to be a valuable player to have around. Hacker made three starts during Tech's first 10 games, each at a different position. The young infielder got his first collegiate start against Navy, playing third base. He opened at shortstop in the final High Point game after starter Warren Schaeffer (Vandergrift, Pa.) was hit by a pitch and sidelined the day before. During Tech's third game against Maryland, Hacker got the starting nod at second base. He is now the Hokies' full-time second baseman with 34 starts at the position.

^^Tech has scored just 15 runs in the first inning of play this season, including only six in ACC games.

^^The Hokies are 19-2 this season when leading after six innings and 1-21 when trailing after six. Tech is 16-2 when it scores more than five runs.

^^Tech has committed one error or less in 17 of its 26 ACC games.

^^Second baseman Matt Hacker (Glen Allen, Va.) had a 15-game conference hitting streak snapped in the opening Georgia Tech game. The freshman infielder has collected at least one hit in 22 of the 24 ACC games in which he has had an official at bat.

^^Ryan Kennedy (Punta Gorda, Fla.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season following his performance against Duke on May 1. The junior left-hander pitched a four-hit shutout for a 2-0 win against the Blue Devils in Durham, N.C. It marked Tech's first shutout in an ACC game and clinched the Hokies' first series sweep in league play. Kennedy walked just one batter and struck out 10 in the contest. He also won the honor in February after striking out 15 in seven innings during a win over Navy.

What's a Hokie? That's the most often-asked question in Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his "Old Hokie" yell which is still used today. Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special meaning, Stull explained the words he used had just been thought up in an effort to get attention. Hokie soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics.

Moving Around The ACC is the fourth conference home for Tech baseball since 1978. The Hokies competed in the Metro Conference from 1979 through 1995. Tech was a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference from the 1996 baseball season through the 2000 season, and competed the last four seasons as a member of the BIG EAST. The Hokies left the Southern Conference in spring 1965 and played as an independent until joining the Metro.

Hot Bats Third baseman Bryan Thomas (Wilmington, N.C.) has posted a .478 (32-67) batting mark over Tech's last 16 games. He has contributed seven doubles, three triples and a home run during that span.

First baseman Chris Stanton (Centreville, Va.) is hitting .450 (18-40) over his last 10 outings. He has scored nine runs and stolen five bases during that stretch.

Second baseman Matt Hacker (Glen Allen, Va.) has nine hits and eight runs scored in his last 23 at bats, for a batting mark of .391.

Left fielder Sheldon Adams (Big Stone Gap, Va.) has a .370 batting average (17-46) over his last 13 outings. During that stretch the junior outfielder has scored 12 runs and driven in nine. Adams, the only left-handed hitter in the starting lineup, is batting .320 this season against left-handed pitching.

Sophomore center fielder Nate Parks (Salem, Va.) has batted .333 (12-36) with eight runs scored and three stolen bases in the Hokies' last 11 games.

MASH Unit Tech's starting pitching rotation has taken a hit this season from injuries. Junior lefty Andrew Wells (Alexandria, Va.), who started the season as the No. 3 starter, was lost for the season with an elbow injury in February. During the Hokies' final game with Miami on Apr. 10, top starter Nicky Bowers (Stuart, Va.) left the mound after four innings with soreness in his shoulder and elbow. Bowers returned to throw two innings of relief on Tuesday against William & Mary. Reliever Scott Stoehr (Timberville, Va.), who returned to the mound April 17 for the first time since the 2003 season, has been sidelined by a sore elbow.

With returning first baseman Sean O'Brien out for the year with a shoulder injury, senior Chris Stanton (Centreville, Va.) was moved into the position at the beginning of the 2005 season. It became the third major starting role for Stanton, who also got 43 starts in the outfield as a freshman in 2002 and made 106 starts at third base the past two seasons. Stanton started 45 of the Hokies' first 47 games at the new position before being limited to DH duties after injuring a finger.
