GIVE THANKS!
NOTES FROM
THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Please watch your “snail” mailbox for the Academy’s Giving Letter requesting addi-tional financial support for the General Fund (operating expenses), the Endow-ment Fund (long-term financial stability),
and the Scholarship Fund (for those who can’t afford tuition). We appreciate your gifts; they secure the present and future
success of the Academy.
The Resource Development Committee has been hard at work seeking communi-ty partners to sponsor A.L.L. publications and programs. As part of that, we wel-come and appreciate our newsletter sponsors. These are reputable, local busi-nesses referred to us by fellow Academy members. Please consider calling them
when in need of services they provide.
We hope you are enjoying your fall se-mester and looking forward to the holi-days. We wish you the happiest, healthi-est Thanksgiving! Although we’ll miss seeing our snowbirds over the late fall
and winter, know we’ll be working hard during that time preparing for study groups starting next spring! In the mean-time, expect to hear from us as events are brought to our attention in which we believe you may be interested. Of course we hope to see you at the holiday lunch-eon on December 9, and Storytellers start-ing on January 4. At a minimum, watch for A.L.L. the News the first of every
month!
In November, Serendipity offers a special Academy wine and food pairing on Nov. 3, the Membership Committee will be
representing us at the Chronicle Book Fair on Nov. 6, and you’re invited by our fall-term-sponsor Prestwick Chase to an end-of-semester celebration on Nov. 10 at Prestwick with hors d’oeuvres and cock-
tails. See page 8 for details.
Please remember our Barnes & Noble Book Fair Sat., Dec 10 for all your holiday
shopping. It is an important annual fund-raiser for the Academy at which our Membership Committee works long hours. Be sure to use the Academy voucher (on page 3) or mention the Academy when checking out. See pages
3 and 11 for details.
New this year is our partnership with Home Made Theater at the Spa Little The-ater in the Saratoga Spa State Park. Order your tickets at the Academy to A Charlie Brown Christmas by Nov. 30 for the play on Dec. 9, and the Academy will receive half the ticket price. See page 10 for de-
tails and the order form.
Please keep and safely store your A.L.L. name tag for use at future events like the holiday luncheon, Storytellers, spring clas-
ses, and other A.L.L. functions.
Please see the Save the Date column on
page 2 and a more detailed calendar on
page 9 for fall events.
I hope you’re finding the Academy to be
a valuable source not only for physical and mental stimulation but for social en-gagement too. Please consider taking advantage of these fall and winter activi-
ties and fund raisers. Be safe and enjoy.
Thank you for your membership!

WATER SERIES
STUDY GROUP
review Submitted by Finance Committee Vice Chair Susan Coveney
In selecting the state where we wanted to retire, we spe-
cifically wanted to live in an area that didn’t have water
shortages and wasn't too hot. Upstate NY seemed per-
fect, so we bought a house in Malta. When I saw the
ALL course in Celebrating Our Precious Water Supply in
the Fall 2015 catalog, I thought it was a great opportuni-
ty to learn about this key resource. What I didn’t realize
was that there’s a water connection to almost everything
that goes on in our state. Yes, as expected, I’ve learned
lots about dams, reservoirs, rivers, lakes, watersheds and
hydroelectric power, but I’ve also learned about the his-
tory and future of NY state in sessions on the canals, en-
gineering projects and water-related industries. This
“Water” series started in the Fall, 2015 session and will
continue through the Spring, 2017 session. Norm Fack-
lam, the study group leader, has done an excellent job of
lining up a new speaker for each session for a 2-hour talk
on a water-related topic. I have enjoyed many excellent
courses at ALL, but this one has been the best for learn-
ing about one of the resources that makes this great
state great.
In a photo (at right) taken by Impressions store owner Mari-anne Barker, mem-bers of the study group Behind the Scenes On and Off Broadway bask in the sunshine (or maybe it’s squint!) after tour-ing her iconic Sarato-ga Springs store.
Their hike ended up in the lake! Study Group Member Michael Egerman (Interpretive Hikes at Moreau Lake State Park) sent the photo below. “Somehow we made a wrong turn going up a mountain. It was a windy and cool but beautiful morning,” he said.
In a photo submitted by Carole Baker (at left), Rita Carozza, Study Group Leader Marjorie Gibbs and Marji Dickinson are at the piano in the study group Legend, Litera-ture and Mythology in Music.

SEE SOMETHING
SAY SOMETHING It’s that time of year again! That’s right, every Hal-
loween, Vera gets dressed up in the “lost & found”
items at 113 West. This year, you’ve done a good
job of keeping your clothes on because there were
only a brown striped hat, 2 pair of glasses
(sunglasses and 3.25 readers) and a variety of jew-
elry - hardly enough for a “decent” photo! Ha! If
you see something in the photo at right that looks
like yours, stop over to the lobby of 113 West and
say something to Joyce. She’ll be glad to show you
the inventory, including the little guy (with the mini
parasol) wearing lost & found jewelry.
ACADEMY FOR LIFELONG LEARNING
CELEBRATING SILVER!
Fall Semester 2017 (only one year away, so let the count down begin!) will mark
the 25th
anniversary of A.L.L.’s first ever study groups, and we are planning now to
Celebrate Silver! Celebrate in a big way! (All year long!) Celebrate your way! (We need and want your ideas and help!) Bot-
tom line, let’s Celebrate Silver every way we can! In early October Academy members (from left in the
back row) Sue Valaitis, Corrie Bishop, Judy Tirelli, Sheryl Egger, Scheryl LoMonico, Marcia Greenson,
(seated from left) Pam Fabry, Carolee Alexander, Executive Council Chair Louise Young and Office Manag-
er Vera Kasson (not in the photo; someone had to be behind the camera!) met to brainstorm ideas!
Here’s what they came up with: Develop an overall theme and tagline; compile a digital photo show with
images from 1992 ‘till today; publish a cookbook with members’ favorite recipes; member event to show-
case member talents in writing, music, crafting, creativity, etc.; knitting project (caps for cancer patients);
dinner reunion event; trip to NYC for a Broadway play; multi-day trip to Nantucket (or some other fabu-
lous spot), and a recurring column in A.L.L. the News to be the source for announcements, updates, pro-
gress reports on all the fun in A.L.L. the News! Rita Carozza, Pat Davis, Carol Dunnigan, Marsha Fagan,
Mary Ann Johnson, Gloria Marceau, Barbara Rosenkranz, Carolee Alexander, Judy Judge and Barb
Schlusberg are on tap to help, too! If you like what you see (or if you don’t and want to suggest other/
different events!), contact Louise Young ([email protected]) or just come to the nest meeting from
9:30 AM ‘till 11 AM November 4 in room 104 of 111 West.. Seriously, the phrase, “many hands, make light
work,” applies. If you’re interested in taking on a leadership role for one of these projects, want to be a
“worker bee,” or simply want to help with one aspect of one event or have different events to suggest,
that’s great! All are welcome and needed!
