“We believe that all can succeed”

Challenge Wales

In July, I took part in the voyage from Cardiff Bay to Cowes in preparation for completing the Round the Island Race—one of the largest 1-day yacht races in the world; travelling around the Isle of Wight involving 1700 boats. We set sail on Challenge Wales, a 72 foot yacht normally used for worldwide voyages. I soon got to know the 15-strong crew and it was a great way to make new friends and build up team skills as well as navigation and racing. I loved the fact that we got straight into it and learned as we were doing the various tasks.

A typical day on board would start by preparing the boat for sailing so roles such as hoisting and feeding the sails, working the winches and the helm to name but a few! After you set sail, 2 people are placed on helm whilst the others tidy up, tweak the sails or make lunch.

Heddwen Frost

One of the highlights of the experience was sailing around Land’s End; we had been on watches for a day or so and my team were off duty but I felt a bit seasick so decided to stay up on deck and read my book. The sun was shining and as I watched the bow glide through the water, a pod of dolphins came to play! It was magnificent seeing them play with the wavers we were creating! It’s something I will never forget.

Dragons Den

In the summer of 2013 our KS4 Welsh Baccalaureate students competed in groups to pitch their ideas and advert for a charity event. Their presentation was in front of formidable groups of Dragons including our Governing Body, executives from the Principality Building Society and local business people. The winning group were invited to the Llanishen branch of the Principality where they each opened a savings account, into which, £25 was kindly deposited by the Principality. We hope they save wisely for the future!

Autism Base

The Autism base is now up and running. This is the third Autism Base within Cardiff and is located within the Youth Centre building. The purpose of the base is to support pupils within a mainstream school but also offering them a ‘safe haven’ to visit at unstructured times. They have been well-supported within their classes and have already made lots of friends. In the Summer term we intend to develop a sensory garden and vegetable patch so any help with that would be great. We are also developing our kitchen facilities and hope in the future to raise money for charity by selling our baked goods. Anybody wishing to visit the base and find out more can contact the school.

World Challenge

In July 2013, a team of twelve courageous students left for the trip of a lifetime. Although travelling is an incredible thing, not many people take the opportunity to do it, so listen to this account of our trip and, hopefully, be inspired! We went to Peru, in South America – land of llamas, Incan artefacts, incredible views and a ridiculous number of potatoes. The trip was organised by a group called World Challenge, the largest schools expedition provider in the world, who provide organisation for schools to take students everywhere. We each raised our sum of £4195 ourselves. through car washes, our own businesses, part time jobs, and a huge amount of cake sales. Also on the expedition were Miss Morris, and Simon, the expedition leader – the two adults who’d made the decision to try and keep us in line for a month.

“We believe that all can succeed”

Peru, July 2013

After about two years of preparation, we were finally ready for the most incredible month of our lives. Of course, over 20 hours and three planes later we were sig-nificantly subdued, but after a short taxi ride through Li-ma (the capital city of Peru) at 3am, a nap and a shower later, we were raring to go again. It was certainly an eye-opener. From the very first day, we felt older, wiser, and we learnt skills which will serve us all well throughout the rest of our lives.

Disco Inferno

The story of Faust is brought to life in an explosion of hit songs, high energy dance routines and glitter-ball spinning action. Burn, baby, burn—Disco Inferno.

It was the summer of 1976 when the weather was as hot as the fashion and Jack was about to celebrate his 21st birthday. Working late in a London dance club, Jack meets Lady Marmalade, the devil’s right hand lady. Dreaming of becoming successful, he makes a Faustian pact with her trading his soul to fulfil the wildest fantasies.

Awards Evening

The Awards Evening is one of our favourite events in the school calendar because it allows us to celebrate the achievements of our young people. Last year was no different. Every teacher was asked to nominate one child for achievement and one for their effort for every class. Subject leaders chose two overall winners who attended on the evening and receive a certificate. In addition to certificates, those pupils nominated in the most categories also received a W H Smith’s gift voucher.

October 2013

We were delighted to continue to work in partnership with Llanishen Rotary Club who sponsor awards for Community Participation in every year group. The governors give awards for pupils who achieve 100% attendance. We also welcomed the Gallimore family once again who enjoyed the trumpet performance by Matthew Williams, Year 12. Matthew awarded the Jonathan Gallimore Music Award. The Katherine Horton Award for English was won by Francesca Rowlands and the Mary Clee Language Award was presented to Huw Chadwick. We are very much looking forward to Awards Evening 2014 and thank everyone who made the event such a success. Mrs James, Year 8 Team Leader

Charity Events

In October 2013, we raised £853 when pupils attended school in non-uniform and this money was donated to Llamau, Wales’ leading homeless charity, working with homeless and potentially homeless young people and vulnerable women across Wales.

We raised £1370 for Children in Need in November 2013.

Sports Relief

Well done and a big ‘thank you’ to all staff and pupils who contributed to the success of Sports Relief. We raised just over £1,153.

Cardiff Against Bullying

Congratulations to Marzana Boksh, Shea Carsen, Megan Davies, Emily Dibble, Elin Featherstone, Nia Hughes, Jasmine Majid and Stephanie Moore who sang so beautifully at the Cardiff Against Bullying Inspire Awards at the SWALEC Stadium in November 2013. It was a fantastic evening and the girls got to learn about the interesting work that different organisations are doing to support young people in Cardiff.

Young Musician of the Year

Karis Tompkins (cellist) and Rachel Griffiths (vocalist) were chosen to represent the school in the Rotary Young Musician Competition. Both girls provided the audience with a delightful programme of contrasting pieces and their performance was both accomplished and musical. Whilst they did not win, they both felt that the evening was of enormous benefit as they received some very helpful comments from the judges.

Young Musician of the Year

As a music department, we are very grateful to both pupils for taking so much time in prepar-ing for this event. Karis is an outstanding cel-list who leads our cello section. Rachel, who hopes to read music in London next year, has made an outstanding contribution to the music department singing in choirs, concerts and com-munity events as well as being an active part of our music productions. We wish them both well in their continued studies in music.

Llangrannog

On 9th December 2013, a group of Year 7 and 8 took a coach to Llangrannog in West Wales so that we could do lots of activities and improve our Welsh. The coach journey was made all the more interesting by Jayden, the boys and their plastic bags!

When we arrived at the camp, we had a big meal and from then on, the week became a blur of great food and fun activities including quad biking, bungie jumping,

London Marathon 2013

Last year, Miss Morris, Assistant Head of Year 12 and teacher of Maths, competed in the London Marathon for the Phab Charity who helps disabled teenagers enjoy as much of a normal life as they can. As some of you know, she is addicted to running and loves competing in various events from 10km to road obstacle courses. After holding many other fund raising events including non-uniform days and Miss Morris’ entry into the London Marathon, she raised £2,581 for this very worthwhile charity.

Thank you for all your support.

Cologne Visit

The German department ran its annual trip to Cologne a couple of weeks before Christmas. It is aimed at Year 7 and 8 pupils in their first year or two of learning German, and gives them a real flavour of the country and its Christmas traditions, as well as the chance to practise their German while shopping at the spectacular Christmas markets in the beautiful city of Cologne. To add to the trip’s appeal, we also take the pupils to the Lindt Chocolate Factory and museum, and to Phantasialand, one of Europe’s finest theme parks that stages an annual ‘Winter Wonderland’.

We pack a lot into three days, and it really is a memorable and motivating experience for the pupils. The Christmas markets, which are on an incredible scale (Cologne has no less than 6 different markets around the city), are an absolute delight for children and adults, with a fabulous festive atmosphere from mid morning until night-time, and an amazing array of stalls selling everything from Christmas decorations and toys to handmade clothes and household goods, not to mention delicious food and drink.

“We believe that all can succeed”

December 2013

As well as the Lindt Chocolate Factory, the markets and Phantasialand, we also visited Cologne Cathedral with its 514 steps.

At one of the markets, an unexploded WW2 bomb was uncovered during building work a few hundred years from our hostel. As a precaution, we were evacuated to an indoor sports stadium where we were given food and drink until the area was made safe.

Llanishen’s Got Talent

This term, over 40 pupils from years 7-11 auditioned and the standard was again exceptionally high. This highlighted the number of talented pupils we have at Llanishen High. 20 acts performed in the final which was held on Wednesday, 27th January 2014. It was an extremely difficult decision for the judges as the performances were all very good.

The winners were:

1st place—Sally Langley (9F) - singer

2nd place—David Middleton (9D) - trumpet player

3rd place—William Jowett (7A) - singer

Thanks to everyone for taking part and for making the event an enjoyable one.

Youth Speaks

Congratulations to our team of Ewan Jones who produced a very interesting speech about the Royal National Lifeboat Institution at the Youth Speaks event in January 2014. He was supported by Bobby Mace, chair, and Alex Fairhurst, vote of thanks. The school was also represented by Owain Taylor who gave an inspiring speech about Nelson Mandela which impressed the audience. Owain was well support by Caylum Latner, chair, and Zac Phillips, vote of thanks.

We were competing against teams from Howells, Bishop of Llandaff, St Johns and the Cathedral School. St Johns managed to win with an excellent speech about the advantages of nuclear energy.

Thanks to the Rotary Club for arranging and sponsoring an enjoyable evening and for Howells for hosting it.

Body Gossip

The Body Gossip Education Programme gives young people the tools they need to navigate the internet, media, fashion and beauty on their own terms. They use a combination of psychology and media literacy delivered in a way that inspires teenagers to recognise their potential and the ways in which they can positively influence their environment. Natasha Devon from Body Gossip spent the day with us. Natasha has worked as a model but now writes for Cosmopolitan as well as doing extensive TV work. Five fantastic workshops were delivered to pupils from years 8 and 9. We will be purchasing some of the books that she recommends for the LRC. She suggests that people can 'like' the Body Gossip Facebook page so that they can receive positive and helpful messages. Pupils can also contact her through Twitter - she wants to hear views and ideas as the Government have asked her to give them the views of young people on a regular basis.

We can recommend the website as it explains more about the organisation and some of its many achievements.

Thank you again to Natasha Devon for running the workshops and to Cardiff Against Bullying for organising the event.

There are a wide range of sports on offer including cheerleading, football including for those with hearing impairments, tennis, table tennis, judo, basketball and touch rugby.

Cheerleading is one of the most popular activities with over 30 children attending on a weekly basis. Central Explosion provide qualified cheer instructors and help put together routines. Two Llanishen teams were entered into the Cardiff Games Annual Competition where over 130 children attended the evening event at the Gate Theatre, Cardiff.

Girls’ football has been a real success at Llanishen High with special thanks to Miss Green, the girls’ football coach. The school placed 1st in the Cardiff Games Girls Football Competition. Through winning this competition, the girls qualified to compete against other winning teams throughout the South Wales Consortium. The girls travelled to Merthyr Town Football Club and they finished in 3rd place in the competition that covered South Wales.

“We believe that all can succeed”

Table tennis has also been popular with Year 7 boys especially. The sessions have been so busy that the club has to turn down pupils each week as it has reached maximum capacity. Some pupils have continued to participate outside of school, attending Cardiff City Table Tennis Club, representing their school in the school league.

Congratulations to the KS3 Girls who entered the Cardiff Games Basketball Competition finishing 4th out of 10 schools. Llanishen entered the tournament with a large squad of 14 players. After being unbeaten for the first two games, the girls were looking promising for a podium finish. The girl’s team narrowly missed out on finishing 1st in their group and qualified for the finals in 2nd place. After a fantastic display of basketball skills, Ysgol Glantaf were drawn as our opposition for the 3rd place spot, a dramatic playoff game lead to girls leaving the competition with their heads held high in 4th place, losing the game by one point.

Well done to all the girls that represented Llanishen High School; Shannon Jones-Gerrard, Elisabeth Salter, Amy Jackson, Eleanor Warren, Mattea Turic, Anya Turic, Francesca Rowlands, Natasha Briggs, Neve Clissold, Sophie Arundel, Borana Kurati, Chloe Black, Batool Hassan and Eve Holcombe.

Eco Council

The Eco Council are constantly working for the good of the school, and in the bigger picture, the world. We do more in the year than I can even remember to write down! So if you care to read, you can see everything we have done during the 2013-14 year at school.

At the beginning of the year we established our year’s agenda, this year we had our main focus on the energy and gas that our school is using (what’s necessary and what is a waste of resources and money). We also recruited some new members from Year 7 and set them to work instantly!

We started by re-planting some trees around the school, making a talk for the French school visit on sustainability, updating our eco board along the corridor with our newer facts and general information, creating a new eco code for every classroom, continuing from the past year with scrap paper boxes for the classrooms, monitoring paper usage, and energy monitoring.

“We believe that all can succeed”

Eco Council

We also got involved with fair trade fortnight. This encourages fair trade within the school and general awareness of the importance of fair trade. To get on top of the energy usage of the school we got in contact with Matthew Price, Cardiff Council Energy Officer, who has given us access to see all the energy usage within the school building. Some Year 10 boys also gave Matthew and the Eco Council a breakdown of the energy usage in the school. We’ve even been part of the Senior Eco Council that’s been running worldwide; meeting with  many other schools’ eco councils from around Wales. We are currently working on a garden in the annexe and it’s going to look brilliant in a matter of time .

Thank you for reading this. We hope you’ve had a good insight into school life and the eco council.

Visit to the House of Lords

In March this year, I was invited to attend the meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages at the House of Lords. For a variety of reasons, languages have seen a dramatic decline in schools over the past 20 years. In the mid 90s, over half of pupils in Welsh schools took a GCSE in a foreign language. This year, the figure is just 22%, and in some parts of Wales it is as low as 11%. (As a comparison, the figure in Llanishen is currently 35%, which is relatively healthy but far below what we would like). There has been a similar decline at A level, with numbers taking French and German A level in Wales falling by 50% in the last four years. In all other countries in Europe, it is compulsory for pupils to study a foreign language for the whole of their school career, so it is a sad fact that when it comes to learning other languages, pupils in the UK have the worst track record in Europe, and Welsh pupils have the worst record in the UK. It means that our youngsters will find it almost impossible to compete for the increasing number of jobs that require language skills, and employers are increasingly recruiting young people from Europe as they cannot find British youngsters with the required skills and qualifications.

“We believe that all can succeed”

Mr Bowen-Jones, Head of Languages

The Parliamentary group expressed their dismay and disbelief at the recent decision to withdraw languages as a compulsory element of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. They have called on the Welsh Assembly to take steps to reverse the decline in language learning. In England, the English Baccalaureate includes a foreign language as a compulsory element, and as a result, there has been a huge increase in the number of English pupils taking a language GCSE over the past two years, which only makes the situation in Wales all the more critical. Welsh pupils will, therefore, find themselves seriously disadvantaged compared to those in England. This debate continues but we hope that parents and pupils realise the importance of gaining a language qualification.

BBC School Report Day

Members of the School Council were chosen to participate in the BBC School Report Day in March 2014 to present the weather. On the day, they had a tour of the studios and learned about the ’behind the scenes’ elements for TV, radio and internet based outputs.

With little nerves on show, the lucky pupils, together with Mr Lloyd and Miss Evans, arrived at Broadcasting House and, after being briefed on the weather events of the day by weatherman Owain Wyn Evans, the pupils worked on their scripts. Within hours, they were presenting like seasoned professionals. Dylan Taylor, Year 10, appeared on the front page of the BBC News website with his weather report for Wales and Jeremiah Azu, Year 8, reported live on the ’red button’ on BBC1.

In addition to the weather, Elinor Thomas, Year 10, and Joshua Clarke, Year 9, had the opportunity to shine by interviewing Mark Beaumont live from St Kitts as he took part in the Queen’s Baton Relay ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July.

“We believe that all can succeed”

March 2014

Owain Taylor and Emma Baptiste, Year 8, Loddan Othman, Year 9 and Cellan Cox, Year 11, also had vital roles to play on the day by helping to produce the bulletins. This proved to be very successful.

Mr Sandrey and his team from the BBC were very impressed by all our pupils and will hopefully contact the school in the future with more exciting opportunities. All members of the School Council had a great experience and will certainly remember the day for years to come!

The Scribblers Tour

The Scribbler’s Tour is a literature workshop for teenagers and pre-teens. This year, our pupils travelled to Cardiff University Students Union where they met various authors including Derek Landy and Ellen Renner who both presented on the day. Derek Landy, author of the best-selling series Skulduggery Pleasant, did a Q&A session answering questions such as ‘when is your next book being released’? Joanna Camaj in 8G asked if there would be a 10th book of the Skulduggery Pleasant series released. Mr Landy replied that he would not write a further book in this series as he was looking forward to creating a new set of characters.

“We believe that all can succeed”

By Shea Carson 8G

As part of her presentation, Ellen Renner, said that there were 3 steps to starting an action book—creating a character and giving them a problem to deal with, creating the surroundings but don’t stop the story to do this and finally do an action scene using lots of onomatopoeic words.

We followed her instructions to create a story and some of us read these out to the audience.

Overall, the Scribbler’s Tour was an amazing experience and if you are interested in becoming an author or just enjoy reading, I would recommend that you attend if you get the chance.

Two teams of our Physics AS Students participated in the Annual Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) challenge. Each team was partnered with a company with links to the engineering industry and presented with a unique design problem. One team worked with the National Grid to provide a solution to the problem with a compressor cooling system at their natural gas storage facility in Avonmouth. The second team worked with the electrical engineering department at Cardiff University to create an electrical power monitoring system for use at medical facilities in Africa.

Both teams used a combination of electrical and software engineering in their solutions using raspberry pi hardware and python pro-gramming in their solutions. They presented their solutions to a panel of expert judges at the Celtic Manor resort alongside teams from schools from all over Wales. The standards were judged to be exceptionally high, and they have been awarded their Crest Gold Award.

Exhibition at North Cardiff Medical Centre

Artworks by Year 9 pupils and GCSE/A Level students were exhibited at North Cardiff Medical Centre on the evening of 15th May. This was a ceremony to mark the hand-over of the artwork from the school to the surgery. This is part of an ongoing partnership between the school, the NCMC and the Patients’ Participation Group (PPG) and it gives pupils the opportunity to publicly exhibit their artwork for the first time; an accomplishment which most artists have to work for years to achieve!

May 2014

Work included Year 9 Achievement group artwork, produced after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays, with pupils producing 2D artworks based on personal themes. Highly-graded GCSE and A Level work was also included. The artwork will be exhibited on a permanent basis in the NCMC for the next two years and it certainly brightens the place up!

Llanishen High School was represented by Headteacher Mr Smyth and Mr Foster, Subject Leader of Art. Parents, pupils and medical staff also attended and a fine evening was had by all.

Teen Tech Day, Liberty Stadium, Swansea

TeenTech Experience is an award-winning event run for Year 8 students across South Wales offering a lively 'hands-on' day of experiments and challenges. We took 10 LHS pupils to be given the challenge of designing their own app, following a short talk from professionals of this field. We were really pleased that we got Highly Commended for Innovation, as well as for the Pitch and also the Icon. We also won the overall award for Best Teamwork. Owain Taylor received a £25 iTunes voucher for his food preservation idea as well as a £350 sound system from JVC who were very impressed with his efforts at their stand. Leah Jenkins also received an ‘honourable mention’ for her innovative ideas.

The day offered a range of activities. We started with the University of Cardiff Chemistry Department where we completed experiments before going onto Technocamps where we attempted to write our own programs. We loved the JVC stand as well as the Airbus Defence, IBM and See Science displays. We also got the chance to see John Watley, Chief Executive of Aerospace Wales, who supported the event.

Thank you to Mr Lloyd and the School Council for organising the event and to Mr Ransome for driving us to the venue.
