Support, Scholarships & Credit PointsThe Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports provides students and professors fromCroatia with four scholarships per course, which cover travel expenses and half board accommo-dation. Applications may be submitted by course directors or interested candidates directly to theIUC Secretariat. For application form visit http://iuc.hr/croatian-ministry.php.

Furthermore, preferential attention should be paid to national funding institutions and foundationsoften providing scholarships or grants for postgraduate courses, e.g. DAAD (German AcademicExchange Service) offering scholarships for IUC courses. For information visit :http://daad.de/stipends.

Students from Austria have to look on www.grants.at.

Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik offers support for PhD candidates coming from SE and EEurope and N of Africa, participating in courses from humanities and social sciences. For eligibil-ity criteria and more information visit http://www.iuc.hr/iuc-support.php.

Course and conference participants are requested to approach their course directors, the academicexchanges service at their home universities and of course the internet for further inquiries.

A certificate is awarded to each student who attends a full course and satisfactorily completestasks established by course directors. Course directors decide in accordance with the universityand the respective graduate and research training program, how many ECTS points are awarded.ECTS points will be measured by the necessary workload of the student to achieve defined learn-ing outcomes and competences. The workload includes time the student needs for lectures, semi-nars, independent work, reading, learning, writing a paper and presenting a paper and/or exam.

How to organise an IUC programme?The IUC is open to new entries. The IUC course or conference must be international (organised byat least two professors from two different countries, while lecturers and preferably students shouldbe from at least three different countries) and at the advanced academic level (graduate, postgradu-ate or post-doc). Organising course and conference directors contact the IUC Secretariat to checkthe availability of space for a specific date. It is advisable to be flexible with dates, if it is possible.

Courses should have minimum 10, maxi-mum 50 participants. This does not applyfor conferences. Course organisers andparticipants are required to cover partici-pation fees. Organisers coming frompaying IUC member universities have asignificant discount. It is also advisable tosecure the academic points to participantsat home universities. Applications for thenext academic year are submitted inspring and approved by the IUC Execu-tive Committee.

Foundation & History

The Inter-University Centre has lived a rich life so far and has taken great pride in contributing tointernational scholarly cooperation. The centre is all set to continue its mission.

The idea to establish the Inter-University Centre (IUC) was launched in 1970 at the meeting of theInternational Association of Universities, in Montreal, by Prof. Ivan Supek, at that time Rector ofthe University of Zagreb. He suggested building an institution fully in the hands of the cooperatingscholars and universities, free of government control. The official inauguration took place in 1972.

The IUC was set as a consortium of universities and other scientific institutions. These universitiesare represented on IUC's Council and contribute toward the development of the IUC academicprogrammes.

The city of Dubrovnik offered a building that could serve as a home for the international centreenvisioned by Prof. Supek.

From the very beginning, the IUC responded to contemporary needs. In the period of the cold war,concerned scholars saw the importance of creating new opportunities for contact and exchange ofknowledge and ideas across division lines. There was a wish to strengthen the role of scientists inbridge building between nations and cultures, ideologies and political systems. The former Yugo-slavia, as a non-aligned country, had the potential to provide conditions for contacts that could nototherwise be achieved. Dubrovnik, with its rich history, culture, its beauty and friendly atmospherewas an ideal site, and Inter-University Centre served as a breathing-hole between East and West.

The centre could not have been established without the generosity of the University of Zagreb,while vice versa IUC has given much in return by connecting young scholars from Croatia and theregion to active international networks of scholars.

The Inter-University Centre soon became a place for vibrant academic exchange. It grew to morethan 250 member institutions before the outbreak of the wars in 1991, in which former Yugoslaviafell apart. Following the wars, the number of member universities has declined to approximately170 but the IUC continued with its mission to bring together members of the academic communityfrom the region. The support of Open Society Foundation greatly helped offering scholarships toPhD candidates from former communist countries of the SE and E European region.

Today, the level of programme activities in courses and conferences remains as high as ever, andIUC governing bodies are supporting inter-disciplinary and cross-national collaboration on globalchallenges. Scholars, students and teachers keep coming, and they are usually eager to come backto Dubrovnik for new IUC events.

IUC Council. The IUC is structured as a consortium of universities and other scientific institu-tions that form the centre's policies and objectives. Each Member institution delegates one repre-sentative to the council, which is the policy-making and the highest governing body of the IUC.Council is responsible for the Constitution of the Centre, admission of new Members, establish-ment of fields of study and academic cooperation, budgetary matters, election of the ExecutiveCommittee and appointment of the Director General. It is chaired by Chair of the Council.

Executive Committee acts on behalf of the Council between Council meetings on the formationof the annual academic programme, acceptance of budget and financial reports and agreementsand contracts with other institutions. It is chaired by Chair of the Executive Committee.

Director General is responsible for the functioning of the Centre, its programmes and finances.

IUC Association provides a legal basis for the functioning of the Centre, for the personnel, prem-ises, equipment and required funding. It was registered in November 1994 in order to provide thecontinuity of the institution in the new legal settings of the Republic of Croatia. It is chaired byPresident of the Association.
