Plans, section and maise diagram

I began my exploration by documenting different types of apertures in Over the Rhine. I chose my favorite apetures and extruded and tapered them in Rhinoceros. These extrusions eventually fit together to form a building. My three programs were a swimming pool, a preformance stage, and a maze. Below are examples of sections of the maze and its navigation.

For this assignment, students were assigned to design a row house for a specific client. The idea was to research the client and learn as much as possible about their personal life. This was necessary in order to design a house to fit all of their needs. Through my research I learned that Neil Degrasse Tyson is an astrophysicist as well as a family man. As a celebrity and wine fanatic, he may want to invite guests over for discussion or possibly donations for the Hayden Planetarium that he is the Director of.

For the design of my concept, I went off of the idea of space and the possibility of an astroid flying though space. In this design the object is inserted into the main building, like an astroid would be inserted into the earth. The ‘object’ that is being inserted is public space into private space. This way, most of the house is public, however, the private space is very private from the rest of the house, allowing the family to be able to retreat to these spaces for personal reasons.

Spacial ConstructionCreate an inhabitable space

Design a section of a whole cohesive structure. Build parts and assemble on site.

An inhabitable space that corrosponded with its surrounding structures. It built strong team relationships as well as knowledge of effiency.

Vacuum form models.

18

Using a backwards process, students were assigned to start from six squares of vacuum formed, thick, melted plastic. We chose one square to mill into 12 pound foam using the autoprofiler. Finally, we designed a 3D print in Rhinoceros that sits inbetween the milled foam and the vacuum form model. Together these three items form a tectonic structure.

The objective of the unit screen was to design a single unit that had the flexibilty to form more than one different orentation. The orientations were a screen, a space and finally a seating arrangement. To contribute to the project I helped come up with the initial design of the unit to iterate. I also did a lot of work in the wood shop creating the final units. We made 36 units total. The units were made out of pine and plywood. This experience taught me how to work well as a team and how to contribute effectivly and patiently.

At my experience at Design Organization I was given the opportunity to experience a wide variety or projects, as well as, the different stages of each project. One project I mainly worked on was Monroe Park. I went to the site and took measurements. After multiple site visits, I modeled the site in Autocad Revit. I also modeled my own revit components to place in the model. This exercise taught me how to take the real world and place it in the virtual world. I think this is an important skill to have in order to fully visualize a space and play with different design options.

In this project I was given the assignment to brainstorm design options for a courtyard in an retirement home. This gave me a chance to sketch many ideas and explain my reasoning. My coworker ended up using the right hand third of my idea in the actual project, as shown in the plan.

Retirement HomeCourtyard

24

25

CourtAtkinsThroughout my Co-op experience at Court Atkins Architects, I learned a lot about high end luxury homes and how they are built. Given the opportunity to go on site visits, I was able to physically see the structure and foundation on which houses are built. I also learned a lot in the office while working on all types of construction documents in AutoCAD, ranging from foundation plans to building details and section cuts.

ThoughtExerciseThe purpose of this thought exercise was to find a way for restaurant owners to boost sales. My idea was to create a menu for people passing by to see what the restaurant has to offer in a fun and exciting way. With this menu, pedestrians will be able to select any item on the menu and view it as a hologram. At the same time the scent of the item will waft out of the monitor, giving the person an almost real life experience of the menu item.

Another feature of this menu is it’s smell sensor. This sensor is activated whenever a person walks by and automatically chooses a random item on the menu to waft it’s scent out. This will attract more people by drawing them in by a delicious smell, leaving them wondering what it was and wanting more.

Also has a sensor where it sprays out smells of food

when people walk by.

Once an item on the menu is chosen, the scent of the meal

is wafted out.

Base of hologram.Shows real color and texture of the food.

Interactive touchscreen menu allows you to choose

any item on the menu to see virtually and smell.

EmblematicDrawingThe purpose of studying the staircase was to be able to diagram both in 2-dimentional and 3-dimentional figures. This shows an understanding of the space and the way people can move throughout it. The emblematic drawing concludes the studies and ties in all the variables.
