I would like to say thank you to Universitas Diponegoro Student Chapter of American

Association of Petroleum Geologists (Undip Sc of AAPG) for the opportunity in the case of End

Year Report. I’m so proud being a part of UNDIP SC OF AAPG as a Professional Organization

could be the place for me to learn and work like a professional. Here we got many experience

about, organization that became important for us to increase our soft skill, hard skill, and

knowledge. We have learnt about petroleum especially in basic geology for petroleum case like

oil and gas exploration, production, field technical, the way to overcome oil crisis with

unconventional energy and the issues about Oil and Gas Industry around the world. We have met

many professional with diverse background as speaker in our program. In UNDIP SC OF AAPG

we learn about responsibility, communication, leadership, and teamwork to be the professional

membership for the beloved organization.

As a Head of Academic division, it’s my pleasure to explain all about what Academic

Division such as our work plan, its progress, what Academic Division have done and what

Academic Division haven’t done along this year term. Actually, Academic Division have tried to

improve academic skill for members, student volunteers, and every people around us. Our

concentration are about improving knowledge about basic geological in petroleum, Field

technique and technologies in exploration and production, English skill, Character building and

Research.

I believe we have to practice ourselves to communicate well in bahasa and English to

help us for the wider experience. We need practice our scientific skill like making the scientific

paper and more about research. So, one of the Academic Division goal is each member could

have some research examples paper, poster, journal and many more. we as Academics Division

ENGLISH TRAINING

English is an international language, spoken in many countries both as a native and as a second

or foreign language. It is taught in the schools in almost every country on this earth. It is a living

and vibrant language spoken by over 300 million people as their native language. Millions more

speak it as an additional language. As a rough estimate, 1000 million or one billion people

around the world have some knowledge of English, either as a native language, as a second

language, or as a foreign language. This fact become important for us to understand that English

capability is needed to get the wider communication with other people around the world. To face

the future we need improve our English skill like speaking, writing, reading, and of course

listening. There skills will increase our value and oportunity in Competition, Education,

Bussines, or Carrier

As student we need English to face the great future so we have a wider scale to communication

or interaction. For there reasons Universitas Diponegoro Student Chapter of American

Association of Petroleum Geologists have tried to facilitate many student in Universitas

Diponegoro for the English Training. The main goal in this program is student can improve and

practice their English Capability. For the theme or term of reference in this program is about

TOEFL. Why we took TOEFL as the theme or topic in this program? Because TOEFL is one of

many way that representative to learn about English. There are Grammar like structure, reading

narration/news/description/and many kind of text, also listening for the conversation about a

matter.

In this program we join with English Language Institute as the facilitator, they prepare a material

that macth with participants needs and give module for the guidance and test. This activity takes

place on June 14th 2014 at Gedung Pertamina Sukowati with the number of participants is 60

peoples

TOEFL TEST

TOEFL is the international standart of English capability around the world to equalize English

standart in many country as foreign language. Nowadays, English as international language is

very important to face globalization era and world wide communications. Therefore Academic

Division of Undip Sc of AAPG facilitate the member and students for TOEFL test. The goal of

this event is to help the participants (members and students) to get the score of TOEFL test to

know their capability and calculate their english skills. We have organized the participants with

TOEFL preparation before the test. After 2 days preparations, all participants will take the the

TOEFL test that organized by English Insitute : SEU. This event be held on June, 20 th 2014 at

SEU English Institute and attended by 60 participants.

This event preparation started from 11.00 am and the test started at 01.00 pm, we

organized the participants at Pertamina Sukowati Building, Geological Engineering and then we

went to SEU English Intitute together. When test go on, the participants doing some topics such

as Listening at the first test, continued with Grammar test such as structure and reading test.

TOEFL test lasts for 2 hours until 03.00 pm. After the test the participants back to Campuss and

then closing session for next instruction. The result of this test was announced 2 weeks later, and

we are glad because the final score of all participants is good enough. They are satisfied and

hoping this event will be hold again in the next time periodically. It is the evidence that UNDIP

Sc of AAPG have facilitated all participants (the students from some major) wonderfully as good

as we expected. For the next period we hope this event will be more prepared to make better

events with higher scale so we can help more people to get their TOEFL test experience.

AAPG LEARNING CLASS

AAPG LEARNING CLASS

AAPG Learning Class is an activity for members and student volunteers of Diponegoro

University of AAPG aimed at providing or facilitating all members and SV’s to learn and discuss

specific topic in order to improve the competence and knowledge of the members and SV’s.

These activities help us to be able to talk about a problem, issue or basic concepts of geology and

petroleum that package attractively. With hopes of exploring competence within each member

and SV’s as well as providing soft skill education such as courage and confidence in discussing a

particular issue can prepare us to be better generations with large knowledge.

This event be held on September, 10th 2014 at Penyet Van Java Resto and attended by 30 person.

Concept of this event is presentation from each group. The theme of this learning class is about

petroleum system, so every group have to present their topic about every aspect in petroleum

system such as trap, reservoir rock, or source rock. Example, one team have a topic about source

rock, it’s mean that this team have to present all about source rock with case study in one field.

After presentation we have discussion session, every participants can give the question or answer

about related topic. After discussion we start to the next group presentation that talking about

another topic.

Page 8: Academic Division End Year

From this event we hope can facilitate all members and SV’s about academic aspect that can be

enriched our knowledge and abilities in hard skill and soft skill. Moreover we can bounding

together, giving the suggestions and support each other. For the next time event we can organize

better even that have been develop and prepared perfectly with larger topics about energy and

future.

AAPG LEARNING SOFTWARE “PETREL”

PETREL is one of geology and geophysics software that used for well log analysis and seismic

modeling. Nowadays is very important to learn geological software that related to exploration

and development hydrocarbon. The software can simplify geology data to be processed and can

help geologists to interprete data mero easily, so the goal of this course is all members UNDIP

SC of AAPG can using PETREL Software to make some modeling and to introduce members with

the software that useful in oil and gas industry.

This course conducted on November 7th 2014 by UNDIP SC of AAPG and the speaker is Mr.

Ahmad Aji Setia Praja from Geological Engineering Department whom expert in PETREL

Software. The participant is only for member UNDIP SC of AAPG. The event take place in

Pertamina Sukowati Building. The result of this course all the participants more interest with

PETREL Software and they can make some illustrate of the modeling using subsurface data.

In this session the facilitator introduce “PETREL” first, what is petrel, what is the purpose, and

what is the advantages of Petrel. And then we start to learnt about Petrel step by step, first we

arranged logging data and tried to differ sand and shale from log gamma ray, and start to

interprete more with another parameters of logging data such as density, neutron, porosity and

so on. After we learnt step by step of processing logging data, we discuss about the prospect

zone of this area that have been proceed.

From this event we tried to enriched our software skill especially about Petrel, so we hope next

time we can learn and practice about another software. AAPG SOFTWARE LEARNING can be

hold periodically to integrate oor skills in processing geological and geophysical data.

AAPG FIELD LEARNING

AAPG Field Learning is an activity that be held outdoor, usually at geological field. The purpose

of this event are to facilitate all members and SV’s about field learning, to enriched our

knowledge and field skills at the geological site directly. As geologist we need more experiences

in the field because a geologists is like the explorer of earth. We have to know the field real

conditions to understand the earth theory more. A geologist learnt much about the theories to

analyze the phenomenon in the earth, including the process, and many factors that influenced.

Example, from rock analyze we can understand how can the rock formed, where is it formed,

how old, what are process, and what was contain there. There are many things that can we know

in the field.

For the reasons we tried to organized the field learning event that be held on September, 27 th

2014 at “Gedong Songo Temple”, the Geo heritage in Ungaran Mountain, Semarang Central

Java. In this we found the geothermal manifestations such as fumarole, steaming ground, warm

ground, hot pool and alteration outcrop. The participants in this event are members and Sv’s that

amount about 25 person. In field we start with tracking to the manifestation site, the first site we

go to fumarole, we observe the manifestation and all things around such as mineralization,

geological structure that may be made the fracture to the surface, and many more. Second place

is the alteration zone that still active, we can saw the alteration process such as transformation

from rock become clay minerals. And the last session we went to the alteration zone that haven’t

active again, continue with discussions about the fieldtrip. In this event facilitated by mr. Tri

Omega Pahlawan and mr. Rizki Akbar Putra.

From this event we have enriched our knowledge in field directly, we hope it can help us to

understand more about geothermal manifestation and how to connected to the geothermal

system. From the outcrop of manifestations we can determinated the zone, and predict the

subsurface conditions. But to understand more we need geophysical survey for getting the

subsurface data or geochemical sample to completed the data. In the next event we hope that can

go to other place to explore more about geological field.

AAPG DEBATE CLASS

AAPG Debate Class is the event that be held on November, 28th 2014 with 25 participants

attended. This event is the breakthrough from academic division to explore more the skills and

knowledge of members and SV’s. Debate class seems like the participants separated into 6 group

with 3 person in each group. They will get a topic and tried to discuss with giving the pro

arguments and contra arguments to the related topic. The purpose of this event are to facilitate us

with the debate forum to discussing many hot issues in Indonesia. It will be good experience to

enriche our knowledge about many issues that have no discussed in the college. With this event

we hope, AAPG can help us to saw the problems from two point of view (pro and contra) so we

can got the positive and negative informations about related topic that have been discussing.

From this effort we will understand how to solve the problems with the best solutions.

The theme that we made in this debate class such as “Increasing the cost of BBM, How’s your

feeling?”, “Meet Energy Demand: Explorations or Energy Diversification”, ‘Save Our Energy

Resource : Hold the Investors or Naturalization the Company”. The topics that we take are

nowadays problems in Indonesia, so with this event we can tried to give the options in positive

and negative point of view and found the best solutions. We have 3 session of debating with 6

group that participate, they are very interesting and attractive with this event. We hope that this

Page 13: Academic Division End Year

event will be hold periodically to give more experience to the student about our problems.

Besides hard skill we also increase our soft skill capability such as giving opinion in English

because in this event we used full English for the communications each other.

Page 14: Academic Division End Year

AAPG ENGLISH DAY

AAPG English Day is a periodically event that be held every week, this is the real effort as a

evidence that we concerned in English capability development. English is global language so we

have to develop our capability and practice periodically to be better native speaker. Nowadays,

every country or region can connected easily, so if we didn’t have a skill to communicate in

English, it will be hold us to face the globalization. The keys to be better in this case are we have

to consider and concern about it, be brave and confident to speak up, and also practice all the

time. With this vision, UNDIP SC AAPG made the agenda in every week that every members

must speak up in English where ever we are. The days are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, in

every these day we have to speak up in English over day. With this agenda we hope can facilitate

all members to increase their capability in communication as a native speaker. So, we can be

better generation that ready to face the globalization. But in this case, everyone must consider the

problem and being consistent.

ACADEMIC WALL MAGAZINE

Academic wall magazine is the product of academic division to fill the space in our wall

magazine. Academic division have some product that based on literary data and proceed to be a

good information. We submit academic wall magazine to media division periodically, every 2

weeks. The purpose of this effort are giving an information to all students about hot issues,

factual news, or geoscience development that connected to the topic of energy. It will help us to

get another news that haven’t we got in the college or daily event.

1. Shale Gas (September, 29th 2014)

Shale gas is natural gas that is found trapped within shale formations.[1] Shale gas has

become an increasingly important source of natural gas in the United States since the

start of this century, and interest has spread to potential gas shales in the rest of the

world. Based on the data from Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resource, 2014

Indonesia have a huge potential of shale gas amount speculatively 574 triliun cubic

feet. So it become the next energy for future in Indonesia, the development and effort

to concern in exploration have to do as soon as possible. To enrich our knowledge

about unconventional energy we made wall magazine that talking about shale gas

2. Coal Bed Methane (October, 13th 2014)

Coal bed methane (CBM) is a form of natural gas extracted from coal beds. In recent

decades it has become an important source of energy in United States, Canada,

Australia, and other countries. The term refers to methane adsorbed into the solid

matrix of the coal. Coal bed methane is distinct from a typical sandstone or other

conventional gas reservoir, as the methane is stored within the coal by a process

called adsorption. Based on the data from Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resource,

2014 Indonesia have a huge potential of shale gas amount speculatively 450 triliun

cubic feet. So what a huge potential it is, Indonesia need the another energy resource

besides conventional oil or gas. We need diversification of energy resource such as

unconventional energy. The best one is CBM, we have a huge resource and we can

develop it as fast as possible. To enrich our knowledge about unconventional energy

we made wall magazine that talking about Coal Bed Methane.

Page 16: Academic Division End Year

3. Methane Hydrate Gas (October, 27th 2014)

Methane hydrate is a cage-like lattice of ice inside of which are trapped molecules of

methane,  the chief constituent of natural gas. If methane hydrate is either warmed or

depressurized, it will revert back to water and natural gas. When brought to the earth's

surface, one cubic meter of gas hydrate releases 164 cubic meters of natural gas.

Hydrate deposits may be several hundred meters thick and generally occur in two

types of settings: under Arctic permafrost, and beneath the ocean floor. Methane that

forms hydrate can be both biogenic, created by biological activity in sediments, and

thermogenic, created by geological processes deeper within the earth. While global

estimates vary considerably, the energy content of methane occurring in hydrate form

is immense, possibly exceeding the combined energy content of all other known

fossil fuels. However, future production volumes are speculative because methane

production from hydrate due to the huge potential.
