CollegeforAmericaatSouthernNewHampshireUniversityOverviewCollegeforAmerica(CFA)isanonline,competency-basedcollegewithinSouthernNewHampshireUniversity(SNHU).SNHUisanot-for-profit,independentinstitutionwithnoreligiousaffiliation.SNHU’smissionistoeducateintellectuallyandculturallyenrichedindividualstobesuccessfulintheircareersandcontributetotheircommunities.SNHU’seducationalphilosophychallengesstudents’intellectualpotentialandpreparesthemforprofessionallivesinanever-changingandincreasinglyinterconnectedworld.Itprovidesasupportiveandclose-knitlearningcommunity,deliveringengaginginstructioninaflexiblevarietyofformats.Studentsdeveloptheknowledgetounderstandacomplexworld,theskillstoacteffectivelywithinthatworldandthewisdomtomakegoodchoices.
CFAMissionWeradicallyexpandandimprovethequalityofhighereducationthroughlow-cost,competency-baseddegreesthataremoreapplicableintheworkplace.
OverviewofCFAProgramCollegeforAmericapartnerswithemployersandotherpartnersnationwidetooffertheiremployeesormembersthechancetoearnacollegedegreeusingacompetency-basedapproachthatisuniquelyaffordable,canbescheduledflexiblyaroundbusylives,andismoreapplicabletotheworkplacethanatraditionaldegree.Studentsmastercompetenciesratherthancompletingcourses.
Competenciesarecan-dostatementssuchas:
CandefineandusemarketingterminologyandconceptsCangenerateavarietyofapproachestoaddressingaproblemCandistinguishfactfromopinionCanconveyinformationbycreatingchartsandgraphs
StudentsdemonstratemasteryofcompetenciesbycompletingProjects,whichtypicallyintegratemultiplecompetenciesfromdifferentcontentandskillareas.Projectsincludelearningandskill-buildingresourcesaswellasrubricswithwhichstudents’workisassessed.
Thiscompetency-basedapproachfocusesonlearning,notseattimeorcredithours.Studentsmoveattheirownpace,whichallowsthemtomovemorequicklythroughareasinwhichtheyhavestrongpreparationandspendmoretimeinareasinwhichtheydonot.NomatterwhateducationalbackgroundstudentsbringtoCollegeforAmerica,allgraduatesleavehavingdemonstratedmasteryofthesamesetofcompetenciesinthemostcriticalareas,includingcommunication,criticalandcreativethinking,andcollaborationandteamwork.CollegeforAmerica’scurriculum,groundedinwell-regardedframeworksforhighereducation,restsonthebuildingblocksoftheLuminaFoundation’sDegreeQualificationsProfile(DQP)andtheU.S.DepartmentofLaborcompetencymodels,amongothers.
EvaluationofStudentWorkEachProjectthatastudentsubmitsisevaluatedbyatrainedprofessionalReviewerwhohasbeenselectedforhisorhersubjectmatterexpertiseaswellasexperienceinonlineeducation.TheReviewerusesanalytic,binaryrubricsratherthantraditionalgradestoprovidefeedbackonstudentworkandalsoprovidestextcomments.Foreachrubriccategory,astudenteitherhasfulfilledthecriterionorhasnotyetfulfilledthecriterion.TocompleteaProject,thestudentmustfulfilleverycriterionoftherubric.Astudentmayreviseandresubmitworkuntilallrubriccriteriahavebeensatisfied.

CFACertificateandAssociate’sDegreeAdmissionPolicyCFAisnotcurrentlyopentothegeneralpublic.StudentsmustbeemployeesofaCFApartnerorganizationorparticipantsinaCFApartnerprogram.Allstudentsmusthaveahighschooldiploma,G.E.D.,orequivalent,exceptinthecaseofspecificpartnerships.Studentswhodonotpossessahighschooldiploma,G.E.D.,orequivalentarenoteligibleforfederalfinancialaid.

Studentswithatleast60credits,butnodegree
Studentswhohaveearnedatleast60semestercollegecreditsfromoneormoreaccreditedinstitutionsmaybeeligibletoenterdirectlyintoaCfABAprogramandwillhavetheirtranscriptsevaluatedonacase-by-casebasis.CollegeforAmericarequiresofficialtranscriptsofallcreditscontributingtothe60minimumcredits.
StudentswithdegreesorcreditsfromanInternationalInstitution
Studentswhohaveearneddegreesorcreditsforcollege-levelcourseworkfrominternationalinstitutionsoutsideoftheUnitedStatesorCanadamaybeeligibletoenteraCfABAdegreeprogrambutmusthavetheirtranscript(s)evaluatedbyaneducationalcredentialevaluationservicethatisrecognizedbytheNationalAssociationofCredentialEvaluationServices(NACES)ortheAssociationofInternationalCredentialsEvaluators

(AICES).StudentsmayalsousetheservicesoftheAmericanAssociationofCollegiateRegistrarsandAdmissionsOfficersInternationalEducationServices(AACRAO)ortheCredentialsEvaluationServiceoftheCommissiononGraduatesofForeignNursingSchools.Studentsareresponsibleforthecostsassociatedwiththisthirdpartyevaluation.
Studentswhoenterwithoutanassociate’sdegreefromanaccreditedcollegeoruniversityorwithfewerthan60creditsfromanaccreditedcollegeoruniversitywillbeginwiththeAAdegree,regardlessoftheirultimateintentiontopursueaBAdegreethroughCfA.
ConcurrentProgramEnrollmentsWhileenrolledintheCFAprogram,studentsmaynotenrollinotheracademicprogramsatSouthernNewHampshireUniversity.TheCFAprogramisafull-timeprogram.AstudenthastheflexibilitytoincreasehisorheracademicworkloadbyengaginginmultipleCFAProjectsatonetime,ifappropriate,throughaconversationwiththestudent’sLearningCoach.
TransferamongSNHUCollegesStudentsinanyofSouthernNewHampshireUniversity’sthreecolleges[CollegeforAmerica(CFA),CollegeofOnlineandContinuingEducation(COCE),orUniversityCollege(UC)]maywishtotransfertoanotherofitsunits.Transferproceduresaredescribedinabasicwayhere,butstudentsareadvisedtoworkwiththeirrespectiveacademicadvisingandadmissionsofficestoconfirmrelevantdetails.StudentsmaybeenrolledonlyinoneofthethreeSNHUcollegesatonetime.

Mid-TermGraduatePolicyCollegeforAmericastudentsmaytransferfromoneCfAprogramtoanotherwithintheirsix-monthtermuponinitialprogramcompletion.Thisallowsastudenttobeginanewprogramandcontinueacademicprogress.StudentsareeligibletobeginanewprogramonthenextCfAtermstartiftheinitialCfAgraduationreviewiscompletedbythe25thofthemonth.IftheinitialCfAgraduationreviewiscompletedafterthe25thofthemonth,thestudentbeginshisorhernewprogramtwomonthslater.Studentsarenotrebilledtuitionuntiltheendofthecurrentterm.

Ifastudentcompletestheinitialprogrampriortothe60%pointintheterm,andisnottransferringtoanotherCfAprogram,federalfinancialaidmayberecalculated.ThisrecalculationmayresultinthereturnoffederalfinancialaidfundstotheDepartmentofEducationandresultinabalanceowedtotheUniversity.
However,ifastudentistransferringtoanotherCfAprogramwithinthesameterm,asdocumentedthroughadmissiontothenewprogramandregistrationinnewcompetenciesapplicabletothenewprogram,federalstudentaidwillnotberecalculated.Thestudentisnoteligibleforanynewfinancialaidfundsasaresultofbeginninganewprograminthesameterm.

AcademicHonestyPolicy1. TobeenrolledinCFA,allstudentsmustsignanAcademicHonestyPolicyform
indicatingthattheyhavereadandunderstoodthepolicy.AllsuspectedviolationsofthispolicywillbebroughttotheattentionoftheChiefAcademicOfficerofCFA(CAO)assoonaspossible.Withinten(10)businessdaysofbeingmadeawareofapossibleviolationofacademichonesty,andbeforeimposingapenalty,theCAOmustnotify:
a. Thestudent,viaanemailtothestudent’sCFAemailaddress,ofthesuspicionofdishonestyandallowthestudentanopportunitytodiscussthesituationonaninformalorunofficialbasis.StudentsmustrespondtotheCAO’sinitialinquirywithin5businessdaysofreceivingthenotification;
b. Thestudent’sLearningCoach;andc. TheCFAAcademicHonestyCommittee(AHC),whichwillreviewthestudent’s
remainingbodyofworkacrosstheCFAprogramasexpeditiouslyaspossible.Afterreviewingthestudent’sentireCFAbodyofwork,theAHCwilldeterminewhethertheviolationwasanunintendedmistakeorawillfulandcalculatedactofdishonesty.TheAHCwilldocumentitsfindinginalettertotheCAO.AfterreceivingthefinalAHCletter,theCAOshalldeterminewhatpenalty,ifany,willbesanctioned.TheCAOwillcommunicatetheoutcometothestudentthroughCFAemail.
a. IftheAHCdeterminesthattheviolationwasanunintendedmistakeratherthanapurposefulactofdishonesty,thentheCAOmayusetheoccasiontohelpeducatethestudentaboutstandardsofacademichonesty.Forexample,the

c. Possiblesanctionsinclude:i. Cancellationofmasterycreditforparticularcompetencies.ii. Warning:Anemailnoticeinformingthestudentthatanallegationof
academicdishonestyhasbeensubstantiatedandwarningthestudentthatsubsequentacademichonestyviolationsmayresultinmoreseveresanctions.
iii. DisciplinaryProbation:Anemailnoticedetailingtheviolation,thelengthofprobationandanyothertermsofprobation.Studentsonprobationwhoviolateacademichonestyfacemoreseveresanctions.
iv. DisciplinarySuspension:SeparationfromCFAforaspecifiedamountoftimeafterwhichthestudentiseligibletoreturn.
v. DisciplinaryDismissalfromCFA:PermanentseparationfromCFAwithoutthepossibilityofreadmission.

PurposeofPolicy:ThepurposeoftheStudentEvaluationAppealpolicyistoprovidestudentswithaprocesstoseekhelporresolutionwhentheyfeelthatanevaluationand/orfeedbackforaProjectareerroneous.
Process:AstudentshouldfirstcorrespondwiththeReviewerdirectlythroughthelearningmanagementsystemtoclarifytheevaluationand/orfeedback.IfnoresolutionisfoundthroughcommunicationwiththeReviewer,thestudentshoulddiscussthismatterwithhisorherLearningCoach.Whennecessary,theLearningCoachwillincludetheSeniorReviewerand/orManageroftheFeedbackCenterinthedialogue.Iftheissuecannotberesolvedatthatlevel,thestudentmaysubmitanemailtotheChiefAcademicOfficer.TheChiefAcademicOfficerwillreviewthecaseandmakeadecision.ThedecisionoftheChiefAcademicOfficerisfinal.
