POLICY ON ACADEMIC HONESTY

1. All students / faculty members / staff members / stakeholders of the Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology are expected to do their work themselves in order to earn the academic credits. “Deemed to be University” upholds academic honesty and integrity in all the spheres of its activity.

2. Students who resort to unfair activities such as copying from the original work of others or seeking the help of others for completing their assignments or indulging in malpractices in examinations or tests or other evaluations are considered dishonest.

3. Also, allowing others to copy from one’s work, or permitting someone else to use one’s work for earning academic credits are academic dishonesty.

4. Causing hindrances or obstacles to a faculty member / student or preventing her / him from realizing their academic goals / aspirations in their pursuit of research and scholarly activities are academic dishonesty.

5. Any evidence of academic dishonesty among its students will entail them to lose all marks in the assignment or examination, or subject them to more stringent penalties, besides their names being notified to the Office of the Dean (Academics) for inclusion in their confidential records.

6. This policy is to uphold the reputation of the Institution for the benefit of its students, faculty members and other stakeholders.

Historical Track Traversed by PMIST

Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology (PMIST) has it organizational root from Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women, the very first engineering college in the world exclusively for the women. Established during 1988, bearing the names of two great social reformers; E V Ramasamy widely respected as “Thanthai Periyar” and his philanthropic wife Annai Maniammaiyar. PMIST has revolutionized women’s education especially the Higher Studies in Science and Technology. Approved by AICTE and functioned under various Universities like Bharathidasan University and Anna University during the transition period.

PMIST has grown over the years, in leaps and bounds encompassing almost every sphere of technology which were once the domains exclusively for the males. With effect from August 17, 2007, it attained the status of Deemed to be University, under section 3 of UGC act 1956. It paved way for initiating co-education attracting both boys and girls.

The Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology is situated in a land area encompassing 216 acres. In fact, the institution has transformed this barren and almost inhospitable land stretch into an adorable lush green piece of land, environment free from pollution that makes it conducive for concentrated study. It has been excelling not only in the class room courses but also in the areas of Research and Sponsored Projects providing an ample opportunity for experimenting the learned concepts and aspects.

Today PMIST is offering 35 regular programmes in UG & PG streams along with M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes in 11 and 20 disciplines respectively under 4 Faculty. In addition, there are 10 centers catering to the needs of Research, Automation, Entrepreneurship development, and also the Social needs under Institutional Social Responsibility. All these are matched with adequate infrastructure and logistical support systems such as sufficient hostels for boys and girls, transports, canteen and hospital facilities. Co-curricular and extracurricular activities are well encouraged through Sports, NSS and YRC etc. It is also accredited by NAAC, approved by UGC and AICTE. In accordance with the guidelines of NAAC an institutional internal mechanism - Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) is functioning with effect from 10th April 2009, to continuously monitor and upgrade the quality of higher education. All these made PMIST as one of the most sought after institution in this region.

Admission and Examination Regulations

Admission Admission to PMIST is in accordance with the guidelines of UGC and other Statutory Bodies concerned. The basis for B.Arch admission is as per the merit in NATA (CoA) and JEE main paper II by CBSE. During admission, the relevant government regulations are being followed in allotments of the quota for different sections of the society.

Academic RegulationsVarious Academic Regulations contemplated (according to different Curriculum Developments) are being adhered to during admission. One Regulation is followed at least for one batch.

At the beginning, PMIST followed Relative Grades with variable thresholds and multiple re-exam system. Later on, European Credit Transfer and Accumulations System (ECTS) was adopted. Subsequently, from 2015-16 Regulation Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was introduced with Absolute Grades. At present, Outcome Based Education (OBE) pattern is being pursued with Absolute Grading and continuous assessments i.e. Formative and Summative (final semester exam) assessments. However, for maintaining a balanced quality level, it is mandatory to obtain minimum mark in the formative and summative exams independently along with the minimum overall mark (considering both formative and summative results put together) for a pass. The grading of marks along with the prescribed pass marks are mentioned in the following tables A and B for different programmes.
