Romanian poet, novelist, playwright, essayist, cineaste and translator, associated with (neo) avant-gardism. Debut as a writer: 1937. Attracted by the personality of the scholar Prince Dimitrie Cantemir, Mihnea Gheorghiu dedicated to him two essay-like novels: Două ambasade - Two Embassies, which was resumed under the title A venit un om din răsărit - A Man Came from the East. They were followed by the novel Enigma din strada presei - Press Street Mystery and the

volume of stories Cele două roze - The Two Roses after William Shakespeare’s plays. Between 1944 and 1946 he was editor in chief of the newspaper “Scânteia tineretului”. As from 1948-1949, he adhered to “proletarskaya kultura”, i.e. he entered into an agreement with the new communist power apparently permanently installed after King Michael was forced to abdicate. Yet in 1961 he founded the magazine “Secolul 20”, whose editor in chief he remained until 1963. As a playwright, Mihnea Gheorghiu wrote several historical dramas: Tudor din Vladimiri – Tudor of Vladimiri, Istorii dramatice – Dramatic Stories, Zodia taurului - Taurus, Patetica '77 – Pathetics ’77, to which are added the scripts for the films Porto-Franco, Tudor, Zodia Fecioarei - Virgo, Pădurea pierdută – The Lost Forest, Cantemir, Hyperion, Tănase Scatiu, Burebista. With the same subtle and scholarly vein, he wrote studies and essays on the history of culture gathered in the volumes The Conformist Way of Art, Guidelines for Foreign Literature, Scenes from the Life of Shakespeare, Letters from the Nearby Vicinity. He was particularly appreciated as a translator, among others, of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and William Shakespeare.
