Matthew is a well-known media commentator on mental health issues. He is involved in national consultation groups with relation to health workforce development and the importance of counseling and psychotherapy as primary treatment interventions.

TiTle: The neurobiological bases of behaviour change.keynoTe: The neurobiological bases of behaviour change. Psychotherapy is as neuroactive as medications and

causes structural changes in brain pathways involved with mood and behavior. Therefore, therapists are neurobiologists as they apply behavioral methods to create change, brains structures alter accordingly. In this presentation neuromechanisms will be discussed in terms of gene expression, brain metabolism and activity and applying these to a variety of issues important for counseling and psychotherapy. Counselling and psychotherapy is a profoundly integrated mind-body approach and therapists should take heart that they possess a powerful intervention to assist people with a variety of problems.

Time 10.30am – 12.00pm

DaTe: THURSDAY 26th SEPTEMBER 2013evenT: WORKSHOP 2Room: Doral RoomPResenTeR: Tanya CurtisBio: Tanya Curtis founded Fabic (Functional Assessment & Behavioural Interventions Clinic) in 2006 with a vision to

support people to Understand & Change unwanted behaviours, whilst simultaneously valuing each person’s uniqueness and individual strengths. Tanya supports people to recognise that “behaviour is not who you are, it is what you do, thus something you can choose to change” … this applies to ALL people using any unwanted behaviour.

Tanya naturally expresses by teaching people to improve their own lives and knows that connecting with people for who they are is essential while supporting them to make their desired behavioural changes!

TiTle: We are all the same in that we are all different: The importance of Meeting the Client for Who they are Without Comparison or judgement

WoRkshoP: As suggested to all carers with whom the author works with: “we must prioritise our own well-being before we are able to truly support another”. Is it possible, that we as professionals must also look at ourselves in continuing to identify & address our own challenges, issues, difficult situations, etcetera so as to “really live what we teach.” The introduction of the “Behaviour Scale” and the “I Choose Charts” will offer visual aides to model a responsible & honest approach to life in a simple, supportive and non-judgmental manner.

Time 10.30am – 12.00pm

DaTe: THURSDAY 26th SEPTEMBER 2013evenT: WORKSHOP 4Room: Nielsens RoomPResenTeR: Heather LidstoneBio: Heather works as a primary school Guidance Officer with Education Queensland and has her own private practice.

She has used sandtray approaches with children and adults of all ages and has created her own series of sandtrays with a therapist as part of her own personal development.

TiTle: Playing in the SandWoRkshoP: The experiential workshop is based on sandplay therapy and symbol work. We will use miniature figures, toys and beautiful objects to tell personal stories and explore emotions. We

will choose objects that may have personal significance for us and notice some of the symbolic meanings we attach to them. Using figures in this way helps us access our unconscious and process personal issues without the need to use words.

Sandtray and symbol work is a powerful but gentle and non-threatening process. You may want to bring your camera to record your personal work. Come and Play!

this is not truly a core model– many may therefore ask “what is a core model and are there other model available “. The fact is the only real core model that to date has been available is a “Freudian Model”. Yet another model does exist, one that supersedes Freud – one that explains succinctly and structurally Human Behaviour - this is what is called the “Quattrune model.

WoRkshoP: The Curiosity Oriented Approach seeks to engage the client and therapist in the adventure of creating beneficial change. Arbitrary Mind Maps tap into the same fundamentals of symbolic mediums like Sandplay, Art and Metaphor Therapy while staying in the comfort zone of words. ‘Playing’ with words can be easier and also a stepping stone for some clients who resist sand and art.

TiTle: Is It All Just A Mental Health Problem? Could It Be Part Genetic and Environmental Inheritance?WoRkshoP: This presentation explores the connections between familial generations through a range of present

and past perspectives of DNA and its role in the influence of daily life, and environmental influences on past generational history. All or none of these may play a vital part in the current increase of behaviours that may well be labelled mental health problems in the very near future.

DaTe: THURSDAY 26th SEPTEMBER 2013evenT: WORKSHOP 15Room: Rex LoungePResenTeR: Michael LynchBio: For over 20 years Michael Lynch has specialised solely in Family & Relationship Law. Michael is a Solicitor and

an Accredited Family Law Specialist and has been since its inception, over 17 years ago. He is a member of various Family Law Associations at National & State Level. He has been a member of the Independent Child Lawyer Panel for over 15 years and is a regular presenter of seminars and workshops on Family & Relationship Law issues.

TiTle: Changes to parenting laws – it’s on againWoRkshoP: The introduction of the shared parenting laws to the Family Law Act in 2006, were the most significant

in the Act’s history to that point. Having created a lot of confusion with the public – it was getting to the stage where the laws were becoming better understood. You guessed it! – Change has struck again. The “family violence” amendments to the Family Law Act that commenced in June 2012 are dramatic and they have largely slipped passed the public’s attention. All the ingredients are present however for these changes to have an equally significant impact on parenting arrangements for Australia’s separated families, as the “shared parenting” arrangements did. Don’t miss this important Family Law updated!

keynoTe: Memory Reconsolidation is a wonderful new development in our understanding of memory and how we can make lasting changes in how memories trigger current emotional disturbance and behavioural problems (PTSD, phobias, dysfunctional behaviour). The only resolution used to be to create a new and preferable thought (extinguishing eg with CBT) or desensitisation therapies (immersion, relaxation) . Memory Reconsolidation is entirely different. It enables us to literally rewrite the synaptic connections and erase the connections between past trauma and current emotional response. This information can apply to whatever style of therapy you prefer to use.

SyndromePaPeR: This paper explores the ramifications of growing up as an extension of the narcissist’s persona, being forced to

live under their shorts, t-shirt thong and skin. Narcissistic Victim Syndrome (NVS) is a new epidemic, rapidly rising. It is suffered by those kin of narcissists who have been exposed to extreme narcissistic personality disorders for an extended period of time. How do we recognise or counsel it and what has gas lighting, hoovering and extensions got to do with it? How can you as a counsellor be prepared when a victim of a narcissist ends up in your therapy room? This paper deals with the phenomenon of a new syndrome, NVS, fast on the rise and being called into recognition by psychotherapists partitioning for it to be recognised in the next DSM-V for 2013.

TiTle: Knowing from within - putting the heart and soul back into higher counselling education through contemplative practices.

PaPeR: In the large institutions that universities have become, competition for funding, grants and prestige are often at the forefront of their agenda. Yet the core function of a university is teaching and learning and knowing. Teaching and learning is a conversation – a dialogic encounter with living minds and hearts. Knowing comes from indwelling or interiority, from presence, from reflection, from an inquiring mind that is not afraid to challenge assumptions, and from creativity and courage.

DaTe: FRIDAY 27th SEPTEMBER 2013evenT: PAPER 4Room: Pinehurst RoomPResenTeR: Tracie RichardsBio: Tracie has extensive experience working with children and families from across the Human Services sector, spanning

over three decades. Tracie is a passionate group facilitator with a playful, therapeutic approach; she is able to fuse theory and fun into an experiential group . Tracie describes her approach as eclectic with a true inquisitiveness for the experiential. Tracie is currently studying a Bachelor of Psychological Science and a Bachelor of Training and Development at The University of New England to encapsulate her life’s work and training. Tracie currently lives in Newcastle, New South Wales; working with Woman and Children who have been affected by Domestic Violence. I have found throughout my practise that sharing other woman’s experiences of Domestic Violence with woman in current violent relationships can have a significant impact. On the back of these findings it was decided a 6 week Art therapy group would enable a space for these shared experiences to be told.

TiTle: The Value and Power of Group Work Counselling and the Unexpected OutcomesPaPeR: Working with Woman individually whom have experience Domestic Violence I would talk extensively about

other women’s experiences; I found it held a great significance in work with the women. On the back of these findings it was decided to run an ART Therapy group for 6 weeks to enable a space for these shared experience to be told.

with recognition from health authorities and the public alike. Australia is beginning to catch up with the trend towards acceptance of Animal-Assisted Therapy, but equine therapy still lags behind in the field. Its status as a ‘fringe’ therapy is gradually evolving towards respectability as more researchers are reporting links between well-being and AAT in general and EAP in particular.

TiTle: Understanding our Third Culture Kid (TCK) clients – The Impact of a Foreign Assignment & Subsequent Expatriation versus Repatriation Experiences of TCKs Lives

PaPeR: Expatriate employees are no doubt affected in many ways, and on multiple levels, by their experience overseas. The challenges faced and adjustments that need to be made, over time, can profoundly impact the perceptions, beliefs, and behaviours of individuals as they attempt to successfully adapt to a new culture and a foreign work environment. Among the “internal” perceptions that can be affected by this process is the degree of identification with one’s “home” and organizational cultures, and aspects of self-concept (e.g., clarity, strength).

TiTle: Changing Perception, Emotions and coming out of the StoryWoRkshoP: The counselling and psychotherapy fields are now at a point in their evolution where they are being

challenged to justify their existence by producing evidence based practice to demonstrate their effectiveness for clients in order to raise the profile of the profession with governments and the community. This presentation will help demonstrate how disturbances are passed from one generation to the next. This will be done generally in a metaphor format rather than using an actual issue from the group.

TiTle: The interconnectedness of “us” – neuroscience, mirror neurons and talking therapiesWoRkshoP: This workshop explores the role of mirror neuron systems on neural development, the development

of wellness as well as the onset of un-wellness. The role of talking therapies to effectively address presenting problems is guided by key principles of neural interaction that are vital for counsellors to bear in mind when working with clients. These principles are briefly discussed as well as the practical implications in terms of neural activation and changing unhelpful neural patterns that maintain dysfunctional behaviours.

Women – Stola)Room: Oasis Poolsideevening acTiviTy: Themed ACA Conference Dinner: Roman Cena In Ancient Roman culture, Cena was the main meal of the day. It was a focal point of social life and included

exotic meals and much conversation. The ACA conference dinner will be in the spirit of the ancient Cena, the meal will be held in the pool area of the resort with a pig on the spit, dried fruit, sea food, vegetarian dishes, chicken, veal, assorted vegetables and many other foods that would have been found in Roman times.

This is very much a fun event and to help everyone get into the swing of things we are hoping you will come dressed in Roman attire (not compulsory). Obviously the first thing to come to mind is the Toga as this was commonly worn however the Toga is not for everyone.

Married Women in Rome also commonly wore a Stola: The Stola was a long, pleated dress, worn over an undergarment called a tunic or tunica intima (the Roman version of a slip). The Stola was generally sleeveless but versions of it did have short or long sleeves.

Men more often than not wore a Toga, it was the style of the toga that reflected the man’s status the more markings on the toga usually the higher the status. If you like a challenge you may also consider wearing the military tunica.

The Cena is a fun event so come along and enjoy the experience. All tickets include a 3 hour beverage pack which includes beer, wine and soft drinks.
