Cityblock explores city life in an exciting and unique way, from up in a high-rise

building to down in the subway. Divided into three sections—things that go, things

to see, and things to eat—it features 24 different aspects of city living. As with the

other acclaimed books in the series, die-cut icons hint at the larger context on

the next spread. Each section opens with a full city scene but gradually focuses

in on the small, unique neighborhoods that make the city large and grand. This

clever book will attract young readers living in a metropolis as well as those in the

countryside with urban life that pops off each page.

Bestselling illustrator Bob Shea and poet Deanna Caswell are back, this time with a haiku book

filled with frights that delight.

Here’s a spooky haiku just for you!

broom across the moon

pointed hat at the window

hair-raising cackle

Can you guess who from this haiku?

A witch, a bat, a skeleton, a jack-o-lantern, a ghost, a black cat, a spider, an owl, and a scarecrow

are all hiding in the pages of this clever Halloween-themed book. Deanna Caswell’s playful haiku

cleverly hint at the creatures revealed after each turn of the page while Bob Shea’s bright illustrations

capture the scary silliness.

Deanna Caswell’s picture books include First Ballet (Disney, 2009) and

Beach House (Chronicle, 2015). A mother of five, she founded the blog

Little House in the Suburbs. Bob Shea has written and illustrated over a

dozen picture books, including the popular Dinosaur vs. series. He lives in

Connecticut with his wife, Colleen, and his son, Ryan.

When a girl receives a beautiful porcelain box from her grandmother, she immediately wants

something special to put inside it. But what could it be? What does she love best? She loves jumping

in puddles on rainy days, blowing bubbles in the park, and watching her little sister’s first steps. As it

turns out, life’s most precious treasures cannot be contained in a box! With a gentle message about

the immateriality of happiness, this story reminds us to take pleasure in everyday moments. The book

is beautifully packaged with a sparkly die-cut star on the cover, and flaps throughout reveal hidden

surprises.

As far as he can tell, Bear is the biggest thing around. He might even be a giant! It's not long

before other, smaller animals set him straight in this charmingly illustrated book about counting and

relative size. Together, two walruses, three foxes, and so on, are the same size as Bear, each teasing

him for foolishly thinking that there is nothing bigger than he. When six sardines arrive to tell Bear that

together, they are just as big as he is, Bear has had enough and gobbles them up for breakfast.

Bedtime means brushing your teeth, putting on pajamas, snuggling, and kissing your family good-

night. For monsters, bedtime looks a little different. They brush their teeth, but not with a toothbrush.

They get dressed for bed, but not in slippers and nightcaps. They snuggle, but not with a blankie or

a teddy bear. Monsters Go Night-Night takes readers through the bedtime rituals of seven friendly

monsters while making each step of the routine a guessing game. Getting ready for bed has never

been so much fun!

Iggy Peck and Rosie Revere have earned their places among the most beloved children’s

characters and have inspired countless kids and adults to follow their passions. Determined Ada Twist,

with her boundless curiosity for science and love of the question “Why?,” is destined to join these

two favorites. Like her classmates Iggy and Rosie, Ada has always been hopelessly curious. Why are

there pointy things stuck to a rose? Why are there hairs growing inside your nose? She embarks on

fact-finding missions and conducts scientific experiments, all in the name of discovery. When her house

fills with a horrific, toe-curling smell, Ada knows it’s up to her to find the source. But, this time, her

experiments lead to trouble.

Award-winning author Duncan Tonatiuh reimagines one of Mexico’s cherished legends. Princess

Izta had many wealthy suitors but dismissed them all. When a mere warrior, Popoca, promised to be

true to her and stay always by her side, Izta fell in love. The emperor promised Popoca if he could

defeat their enemy Jaguar Claw, then Popoca and Izta could wed. When Popoca was near to defeating

Jaguar Claw, his opponent sent a messenger to Izta saying Popoca was dead. Izta fell into a deep sleep

and, upon his return, even Popoca could not wake her. As promised Popoca stayed by her side. So two

volcanoes were formed: Iztaccíhuatl, who continues to sleep, and Popocatépetl, who spews ash and

smoke, trying to wake his love.

Duncan Tonatiuh’s books have won numerous awards: Diego Rivera won the Pura Belpré

Illustration Award; Pancho Rabbit won two Pura Belpré Honor awards, for illustration and

narrative; Separate Is Never Equal won the prestigious Sibert Honor Award; and Funny

Bones won the Sibert Award. He lives in Mexico.

Charles Darwin was a scientist by profession but an explorer at heart. At age 22, Darwin embarked

on his first voyage aboard a ship called the Beagle. This picture book follows Charles as he explores

South America for the first time, collecting insects, galloping with gauchos, digging up dinosaur bones,

eating armadillo for breakfast, and making early discoveries related to evolution and natural selection.

He encounters a volcano, a glacier, and an earthquake and survives a harrowing five-year journey

before returning home to England, determined to devote his life to the natural world. Complete with

mesmerizing map work charting his voyage, this biography communicates Darwin’s ideas and discover-

ies with gentle illustrations that capture his admiration for the world around him.

Jennifer Thermes is a children’s book author/illustrator and map illustrator. When not

making art, she loves to read and work in her garden. She lives with her family, two cats,

one dog, and an assortment of uninvited mice in an 18th-century farmhouse in

Connecticut.

Ada Lovelace (1815–1852) was the daughter of Lord Byron, a poet, and Anna Isabella Milbanke,

a mathematician. Her parents separated when she was young, and her mother insisted on a logic-

focused education, rejecting Byron’s “mad” love of poetry. But Ada remained fascinated with her father

and considered mathematics “poetical science.” Via her friendship with inventor Charles Babbage, she

became involved in “programming” his Analytical Engine, a precursor to the computer, thus becoming

the world’s first computer programmer. This picture book biography of Ada Lovelace is a compelling

portrait of a woman who saw the potential for numbers to make art.

Fiona Robinson is the author/illustrator of Whale Shines and What Animals Really Like,

among other picture books. What Animals Really Like received the 2012 Irma Black

Award, and Bank Street named it one of the 2012 Best Children’s Books. Her work has

Fannie Sellins (1872–1919) lived during the Gilded Age of American Industrialization, when the

Carnegies and Morgans wore jewels while their laborers wore rags. Fannie dreamed that America

could achieve its ideals of equality and justice for all, and she sacrificed her life to help that dream

come true. Fannie became a union activist, helping to create St. Louis, Missouri, Local 67 of the

United Garment Workers of America. She traveled the nation and eventually gave her life, calling

for fair wages and decent working and living conditions for workers in both the garment and mining

industries. Her accomplishments live on today. This book includes an index, glossary, a timeline of

unions in the United States, and endnotes.

Bolden offers an insightful look at some of the most fascinating yet relatively unknown figures

of American history, from a young boy sold into slavery in Colonial America to those who helped

the United States land on the moon. Over the centuries untold numbers of black men and women in

America have achieved great things against the odds. Pathfinders is a collective biography of sixteen

American men and women of African descent who made their mark on American history: people who

dared to dream, take risks, and create goals not only for themselves but also for others and the better-

ment of their society. Each profile includes several images, ranging from paintings and photographs to

primary documents. The book ends with an author’s note, timeline, bibliography, and index.

Tonya Bolden has written a number of books about African Americans. She travels

extensively, visiting school groups and participating in panels and conferences. She lives

in New York City.

Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson

“I was born liking math,” eighty-year-old Katherine Johnson told a reporter in 1998. “I counted the steps. I counted the plates that I washed. I counted everything.’’

Young Katherine did that counting in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, where she entered elementary school as a second grader shortly before her sixth birth-day. Going through school in leaps and bounds, this math prodigy was poised to start high school at age ten in 1928. But there was a problem. Her hometown had no high school for blacks.

Allen Allensworth

Twelve-year-old Allen saw tears streaming down his mother’s face as he stood in her cabin. His mother lay in bed, utterly forlorn. Her husband had died a few years back. Her other twelve sons and daughters were long gone from Louisville, Kentucky. Some had been sold. Others had escaped. Now Allen, her youngest, was being taken from her.

The boy had been sold to a man with a plantation in Henderson County, Kentucky, more than one hundred miles away. The sale was Allen’s punishment for trying to improve himself by honing his reading and writing skills.

This stunning picture book from the bestselling team of Jean-Luc Fromental and Joëlle Jolivet

cleverly introduces many of the bones that make up the human body.

A mysterious beast is terrorizing the resident skeletons of Bonesville. Under cover of darkness, it

steals a different bone from each townsperson, from cranium to phalanges. It takes the washerwoman’s

humerus, the butcher’s fibula, and Dr. Strongbones’s coccyx. Thanks to his patience and cleverness,

Detective Sherlock Bones traps the monster, revealing that the beast is only the harmless Spot of the

Baskervilles, on a mission to rebuild the lost skeleton of his master, Dr. Watsbones.

Jolivet’s bold illustrations and Fromental’s witty storytelling make for a winning combination in this

striking picture book, perfect for young Sherlock Holmes fans.

Jean-Luc Fromental is the author of more than thirty books. Joëlle Jolivet

is an internationally acclaimed illustrator. Publishers Weekly called her

books “vibrant . . . dazzling,” and School Library Journal said they are “as

aesthetically impressive as they are informative.” They both live in France.

In book three, everyone’s favorite pranksters are at it again! Miles and Niles are sent away

for the summer to Camp Good Times, where they fail to feel the positive vibrations. When kids

from a rival camp, led by bully Josh Barkin, raid Good Times, class president and de facto camp

leader Holly Rash looks to Miles and Niles for help. Will our heroes break free from the feckless

feel-goodery of Camp Good Times? And can their sharp minds smash the hard fists of Josh and

his cadets? In this third book in the witty, on-target illustrated series, Barnett and John “are in

perfect comic harmony” (Publishers Weekly), proving once again that pranks in the hands of the

powerless can be tools of justice—plus they’re funny.

Honor winner Extra Yarn. He lives in Berkeley. Jory John writes picture

books and coauthored the bestselling All My Friends Are Dead. He

Every resident of the planet Yipsmix has synesthesia—they don’t just hear sounds; they see and

taste them, too. On this unusual planet, poor Jaq Rollop must save his family’s farm. To do so, Jaq

is forced to sell his beloved pet and only friend. Trusting and naïve, Jaq gets swindled into trading

his pet for a seemingly worthless key. But then something very strange happens. The key leads Jaq

through a wormhole to a terrifying and magical land full of riches, overwhelming sensations, and

giants. The name of this frightening land? Earth.

This clever middle-grade fantasy will appeal to fans of the Sisters Grimm, A Tale Dark & Grimm,

and the Land of Stories series.

In the spirit of A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters

stars Jaundice and Kale Bland—two sisters who avoid excitement at any cost. Instead, they eat

tasteless oatmeal, rarely venture into bright sunlight, and read only Dr. Snoote’s Dictionary, because

storybooks are just too thrilling. Together, they await the return of their parents, who left for an

errand years ago and have never come back. One day, a knock on the door leads to the Bland sisters’

kidnapping by an all-female band of pirates—but this is only the beginning of their escapades. Filled

with Roald Dahl-esque humor, high jinks, and swashbuckling, The Unintentional Adventures of the

Bland Sisters will appeal to middle-grade readers looking for an anything-but-bland adventure.

What do you get when you mix a sci-fi nerd, an artist, a social pariah, and the most popular girl in

school with a mysterious bus crash? Some strange new abilities: Martina can change her eye color;

Nick can teleport four inches, but only to the left; Farshad can channel super strength, but only in his

thumbs; and Cookie can read minds, when those minds are thinking about directions. They are, in

short, oddly mighty, especially when they work together. Starring a diverse group of kids with (very

limited) superpowers, this series’ multiple narrators make for a quirky, pitch-perfect read that tackles

identity and stereotypes. Ignatow’s characters have been praised widely, as “very real” by the New

York Times and “completely convincing” by the New Yorker.

Amy Ignatow is a cartoonist and the author of the Popularity Papers series of scrapbook-

Every Falling Star, the first book to portray contemporary North Korea to a

young audience, is the intense memoir of a North Korean boy named Sungju

who is forced at age twelve to live on the streets and fend for himself. To survive,

Sungju creates a gang and lives by thieving, fighting, begging, and stealing rides

on cargo trains. Sungju richly re-creates his scabrous story, depicting what it

was like for a boy alone to create a new family with his gang, his “brothers”; to be

hungry and to fear arrest, imprisonment, and even execution. This riveting memoir

allows young readers to learn about other cultures where freedoms they take for

granted do not exist.

Sungju Lee speaks across Europe, Asia, and North

America about his experiences and about North Korean

political social issues. He lives in South Korea but studies

in England. Susan Elizabeth McClelland’s first book, Bite

of the Mango, was a worldwide sensation, published in

more than 30 countries. She lives in Toronto, Canada.

Everyone said they were witches. I

desperately wanted to believe it. They moved

through the corridors like sleek fish, ripples in their

wake, stares following their backs and their hair.

The Graces had friends, but then they didn’t. They changed

friends like some people changed hairstyles, as if perpetually wait-

ing for someone better to come along. No one had real details of

their personal lives—except for whoever Fenrin was sleeping with on

any given week, as he never hid it. These girls were nothing, just dis-

tractions. He was waiting for someone special, someone different

who would catch his attention so suddenly and so completely,

he’d wonder how he had survived all this time without them.

They all were, all three of them. I could see it.

All I had to do was find a way to show them it

was me they’d been waiting for.

This fabulously addictive paranormal fantasy combines lyrical prose with a twist that even the

savviest reader won’t anticipate. It’s a must-read for fans of We Were Liars, The Haunting of Sunshine

Girl, and Red Queen. Everyone loves the Graces. Fenrin, Thalia, and Summer Grace are attractive,

rich, glamorous, and—maybe—witches. They’ve cast a spell over their entire town. If you’re not in

love with one of them, you want to be them. Especially River, the loner new girl at school. River’s dark,

aloof, and just maybe . . . magical. What the Graces don’t know is that River’s presence is no accident.

And the first rule of witchcraft is that if you want something hard enough, you can get it . . . no matter

who has to pay.

An excerpt from

I am Love. Your trusty narrator.

It is quite possible that you think you’ve found me when you haven’t.

That’s the funny thing about you people. You manage to see me in

the most ridiculous of places: in a stolen kiss with your best friend’s

boyfriend; in the warm, soft words of the boy who wants you to lose it

on his basement couch.

But this is True Love, you say.

Sorry to disappoint, but a lot of the time, that’s not really me.

I refer you back to Romeo and Juliet; Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere;

Bella and Edward—history and literature are full of examples of people

who made bad decisions in the name of, well, me.

Forget about true, capital L “Love.” The real kind makes you better

than you ever knew you could be. So, how do you fi d me?

Well. I’m actually the one who fi ds you.

It’s Boston, 1919, and the Cast Iron club is packed. On stage, hemopaths—whose “afflicted” blood

gives them the ability to create illusions through art—Corinne and Ada have been best friends ever

since infamous gangster Johnny Dervish recruited them into his circle. By night they perform for

Johnny’s crowds, and by day they con Boston’s elite. When a job goes wrong and Ada is imprisoned,

she realizes how precarious their position is. After she escapes, two of the Cast Iron’s hires are shot,

and Johnny disappears. With the law closing in, Corinne and Ada are forced to hunt for answers, even

as betrayal faces them at every turn. An ideal next read for fans of Libba Bray’s The Diviners.

Destiny Soria graduated from Samford University with a BA in English. For seven

Jai sat on her bed and all the novices, younger and older, flocked around

her as we always do when there is a new arrival. The little girls admired

the long blonde hair flowing out of her linen headscarf. Our headscarves

protect us from the strong sun, but under them our hair must never be

bound. We never cut our hair either. Our hair holds our strength, Sister

O says.

The older girls quizzed her about where she came from, how long she

had travelled, whether she had known anything about the Abbey before.

Jai sat completely still. Her complexion was fairer than most, but I could

tell that she was unusually pale. The skin under her eyes was thin and dark,

nearly purple. Like violets in spring. She did not say a thing or answer a

single question, she just looked around . . .

“Do you understand what I am saying?” I asked softly. Maybe she came

from such a faraway land that she did not even speak the coast languages. I

did not when I first came . . . My first year at the Abbey was difficult before

I learnt the language.

Jai nodded. Then suddenly she opened her mouth to speak.

“Is it true there are no menfolk here?” Her voice was unexpectedly husky

and her accent was one I had never heard before.

I shook my head. “Never. Men are not allowed on the island. The

fishermen we trade with do not set foot on the land, Sister Veerk buys

the catch from the pier. We have male animals of course. One quite savage

rooster, some billy goats. But no men.”

Only women and girls are allowed in the Red Abbey, a haven from abuse and oppression.

Maresi, a thirteen-year-old novice there, arrived in the Hunger Winter and now lives a happy

life in the Abbey, protected by the Mother and reveling in the vast library in the House of

Knowledge, her favorite place.

Into this idyllic existence comes Jai, a girl with a dark past. She has escaped her home after

witnessing the killing of her beloved sister. Soon the dangers of the outside world follow Jai

into the sacred space of the Abbey, and Maresi can no longer hide in books and words but must

become one who acts.

A. G. Howard returns with an eerie, atmospheric novel. Rune has an otherworldly affliction linked

to her operatic talent, and a horrifying secret. To offer creative direction, her mother sends her to

RoseBlood, a French arts conservatory tied to The Phantom of the Opera. There Rune befriends

Thorn—a masked, elusive violinist who guides her musical transformation. As their romance blossoms,

Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make an impossible choice: lead Rune to her

end, or destroy the century-old specter who haunts the opera house, and is the only father he’s ever

known. This spinoff of Leroux’s famous tale of unrequited love turned madness will captivate fans of

I hate camp. I just hate it. I wish I didn’t. But I do. Being here is worse than bug juice on a burger.

Or homework on Thanksgiving. Or water seeping into my shoes. In this sequel to Like Pickle Juice

bugs, no electricity, and terrible food. And worst of all: swim class, where she just can’t seem to keep

even after some belly flops.

follows Yoshi, a Japanese boy who dreams of becoming a samurai. Unfortunately, as part of the

serving class, Yoshi can never become a warrior. He is taken up by Manjiro, the protagonist of Preus’s

Heart of a Samurai, and becomes his servant and secret watchdog. Meanwhile, Commodore Matthew

Perry and his USS Susquehanna squadron of steamships arrive in Edo Bay demanding that Japan

open its ports to foreign trade. Aboard the commodore’s flagship is Jack, a cabin boy who becomes

separated from his American companions. He and Yoshi set out on a grand adventure to return Jack

to his ship before he is discovered by the shogun’s samurai.

Margi Preus is the author of the acclaimed novels West of the Moon, Shadow on the

MIDDLE-GRADE FICTION

With over five million copies sold, the smash-hit Origami Yoda series is now available in trade paperback! ■ BY TOM ANG LEBERGER

AN ORIGAMI YODA BOOK

Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue!

AN ORIGAMI YODA BOOK

In Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue, the

war against the FunTime Menace—aka test

prep—wages on at McQuarrie Middle School.

Our heroes have already won one battle, with

the help of surprising ally Jabba the Puppett.

But to defeat the Dark Standardized Testing

Forces they’re going to need an even bigger,

even more surprising ally: Principal Rabbski.

With pressure from great forces—the school

board—will this former enemy join the Rebellion,

or will her transformation into Empress

Rabbski, Dark Lord of the Sith, be complete?

With this topical episode, Tom Angleberger

demonstrates once again that his “grasp of

middle-school emotions, humor and behavior is

spot-on” (Scripps Howard News Service).

After successfully fighting to save their

field trip in Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue!,

Tommy and the gang prepare for a well-earned

day of fun and adventure in Washington, DC

. . . but of course it won’t be that easy! This trip

to the nation’s capital will be full of shifting

alliances and betrayals, carsickness and sugar

rushes. Trouble starts even before the buses

leave school, when Principal Rabbski decrees

the field trip an “origami-free zone.” Dwight

secretly folds a Yoda from a Fruit Roll-Up, but

will Fruitigami Yoda be a match for Harvey’s

sour, hate-filled pickle of darkness?

kids laugh and think.

René Magritte (Belgian, 1898–1967), one of the world’s most beloved artists,

Can a photograph capture the sensation of a warm spring breeze or the smell of freshly fallen

snow? What the Weather Was Like, the third volume in a series of creative collaborations between

renowned artist and bestselling author Maira Kalman, New York Times bestselling author Daniel

Handler (aka Lemony Snicket), and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, is an evocative exploration

of the physical environments captured in photographs from around the world. From the rainy streets

of Paris to a sun-dappled pool in Beverly Hills, from steamy summer sidewalks in Brooklyn to snow-

covered fields in Japan, the photographs depict much more than what first meets the eye. Featuring

vibrant new paintings by Kalman inspired by these photographs and poetic prose by Handler that

bring the images to life, What the Weather Was Like is a tender reflection on the passing of seasons,

perspective, and memory.

Maira Kalman is a bestselling and award-winning artist, illustrator, and

writer whose books include 13 Words (with Daniel Handler), My Favorite

Things, Beloved Dog, and The Elements of Style. Her artwork has been

The Museum of Me follows a little girl on a

journey of discovery to find out what museums

are and what they have inside them. Brimming

with anticipation, she finds giant bugs and

peculiar beasts, ancient pots and contemporary

paintings, feathery leaves and flowers as big as

her own head! Marveling at museums old, new,

outdoors, and even in outer space, she soon

realizes that her favorite museum of all is waiting

for her at home: The Museum of Me. Illustrated

in a distinctive, collaged style by debut author

Emma Lewis, The Museum of Me celebrates how

a collection of objects can reflect our identities.

Emma Lewis is an illustrator living in

London. She studied at Falmouth

University and Camberwell College

of Arts and is inspired by folk art

and Scandinavian design.

What are museums? Big buildings filled with the oldest and oddest things from all around the world!

JUVENILE

Jill—heroine of the acclaimed Jill & Dragon—

sets off on a new adventure and tries to help a

new friend. She meets a very sad lion—a King of

the Jungle robbed of his crown! Forced to drive

a toy car around in endless circles, poor Lion is

so unhappy that his tears have started to blur the

words of the story. Jill gallantly intervenes only to

land herself in the middle of a particularly danger-

ous page. But with Dog at her side, nothing is too

difficult for Jill to conquer. Another charming story

from rising illustration talent Lesley Barnes, Jill &

Lion shows it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Lesley Barnes is an illustrator and

animator based in Glasgow. She

has collaborated with the V&A in

London; the Scottish band Belle &

Sebastian; and Glamour and Stylist

magazines.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious

volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some

one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door . . .

Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” is one of the most widely recognized poems in the English

language. When it first appeared in the New York Evening Mirror in 1845, the poem made Poe an

overnight sensation. Master paper engineer David Pelham amazes us once again with his pop-up

design to interpret this haunting love story.

Edgar Allan Poe, the 19th-century writer, is known for his gothic and

macabre work. David Pelham, designer and paper engineer, has created

numerous bestselling children’s books. Christopher Wormell, an

outstanding artist and printmaker, has written and illustrated a variety of

children’s books. Pelham and Wormell reside in London.

■ Literary classic: “The Raven,”

first published in 1845, has

been studied and discussed for

generations

■ Bestselling author: Master

designer and paper engineer

David Pelham’s creative,

interactive books—including

The Human Body, Dimensional

Man, Sam’s Sandwich, and A is

for Animals—have sold millions

worldwide

■ Seasonal promotions: The

macabre tone of “The Raven”

and the dark, ominous artwork

make it a wonderful book for

Halloween, while its upmarket

appearance makes it a special

gift for any occasion

■ Wide appeal: A great crossover

title for a young audience and

older literature enthusiasts

alike, as well as for pop-up book

collectors
