Service Organization Cup 2014 In yet another interesting tournament, Midtown bagged the runners-up trophy in Service Organization cup 2014, organized by Round Table (MRT21). The tournament is organized for service organizations in the city. This year 9 teams participated, 3 Rotary clubs, 3 Tables, 1 Lions, BAI & 41ers. After a gap of 2 years the tournament was slated to be a exciting event. Midtown team was the only team with new team colors making a few eyebrows raise, comments like “how come Midtown manages to get new colors for every tournament” was heard from other teams. Midtown was in group A along with Rotary Central, 41ers & Builders Association of India. It looked like history repeating itself time and again when the ties were announced, Midtown was pitched against its arch rivals (or so it is perceived!!) Rotary Central. Statistically going the match result was obvious but being Cricket, it could be anyone's game on a given day. The matches were 8 overs a side with first 3 overs as powerplay, each bowler could bowl a maximum of 2 overs in an inning. Midtown team entered the field without much practice, few of the players having played only during the District tournament held during October. It turned out to be a one sided match with Central dominating most of the match. Central won comfortably. Slightly disappointed, but willing to bounce back, Midtown entered the second match with much confidence against BAI. The players getting into groove put up a good show on field and restricted BAI for a moderate score. Chasing began with a bang and Midtown managed to score more than 30 runs in the first 3 overs, sealing the match in Midtown's favour. Midtown won the match comfortably in 5 overs with 9 wickets left. Having played 2 matches on Saturday, the next day posed a challenge as Midtown would have played 3 matches if it had to reach the finals. Fortunately one of the teams gave walkover ensuring that Midtown got a berth in Semis and much required rest. The semis was against the winner of Group A, Rotary Mysore. The team had to wait till post lunch for the match and Rtn.Alagappan, Rtn.Dr.Prahlad, Rtn.Sundar dropped by to cheer the waiting team. The post lunch match was a scorcher, Midtown won the toss and elected to bat first. Rtn.Milton put up a decent knock taking Midtown to a comfortable score. The challenge was then to field in the hot sun. Midtown bowlers Rtn.Balaji, Rtn.Sanjay,Rtn.Nagi & Rtn.Aiyanna put up a brilliant performance to restrict the Mysore team. Midtown triumphed and reached finals of SOC. Finals was again to be played against Rotary Central who had won all the matches they played. Central team had new professional players joining the team. Midtown fielding first, put up a decent show in bowling but suffered due to evidently tired fielders struggling to catch. Yet, the bowlers managed to control the Central batsmen and restricted to under 60 runs in 8 overs. Chasing the modest total Midtown began well with scoring 12 runs in the first over but went on loosing wickets regularly and finally conceded with only 7 runs to win ending up as Runners-up in SOC 2014. A grueling, hot 2 day tournament ended with a happy news, Rtn.Sait offered a pair of “fastrack” to all the players. Tired but satisfied with their performance Midtown cricket team left with the thought - “Next time we must bag the Winner's trophy!!!”

Service Organization Cup 2014

In yet another interesting tournament, Midtown bagged the runners-up trophy in Service Organization cup 2014, organized by Round Table (MRT21).

New set of WheelsPresident, Rtn.BhanuChandran acquired a

swanky new Maruti Swift VDi recently. A

recent trend in Midtown is that Rotarian

would acquire a new car just before, during or

just after their term as a President. Power of

the post? – maybe!!

Venky & team at Tirupati

President Elect Venky already busy with incorporating plans for his term as president of Midtown visited Tirupati alongwith Midtown friends to seek blessings of Lord Venkateshwara at Tirupati recently. While NaMo enters the Centrestage with lot of hopes, surely Venky Namo will also bring laurels to the club.

Circles, no way, there are only squares in the graphic. Watch closely at the optical illusion in the left graphic and you will see circles as well. Still not able to figure out, stare at the cross at the centre in the graphic and the circles will appear. Awesome, right?

How many circles do you see?

The Great Indian Election 2014The Indian general election of 2014 was held to constitute the 16th Lok Sabha, electing members of

parliament to all 543 parliamentary constituencies of India. Running in nine phases from 7 April to 12 May

2014, this was the longest election in the country's history. According to the Election Commission of India,

814.5 million people were eligible to vote, with an increase of 100 million voters since the last general

election in 2009, making this the largest-ever election in the world. Around 23.1 million or 2.7% of the

total eligible voters were aged 18–19 years. A total of 8,251 candidates contested for the 543 Lok Sabha

seats. The average election turnout over all nine phases was around 66.38%, the highest ever in the

history of Indian general elections.

The results were declared on 16 May, fifteen days before the 15th Lok Sabha completes its

constitutional mandate on 31 May 2014. The counting exercise was held at 989 counting centres.[8] The

National Democratic Alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, won a sweeping victory, taking 336 seats.

The BJP itself won 282 seats, the first time since Rajiv Gandhi's landslide victory in 1984 that an Indian

party has won enough seats to govern without the support of other parties. The United Progressive

Alliance, led by the Indian National

Congress, won 59 seats, 44 of which

were won by the Congress. BJP leader

Narendra Modi is thus poised to take

office at the helm of the largest majority

government since 1984. It was also the

second-worst defeat of a sitting

government in independent India. Source:Wikipedia

Yoga for Well being

Last Wednesday, speaker of the day was Sri.Sudhesh Chand who spoke on “Yoga : The Integrated approach towards peace and happiness”. The summer heat, IPL action and Election results anxiety took a toll on the attendance and Midtowners in moderate numbers turned up for the meeting which promised knowledge on Yoga. After slightly prolonged fellowship the meeting started with regular actions by President Bhanu. Ann.Chaitra beaming with confidence (she got 3rd rank in M.A Economics, right?) introduced the speaker of the day Sri.Sudhesh Chand to the audience. Chaitra being a student at the Yoga centre run by Sudhesh Chand quickly shared the fact that Midtowner Ravi Moms & Sudhesh were class mates.

Sri.Sudhesh presented a neatly compiled powerpoint sharing information about Yoga. First few slides explained the vast history of Yoga, its origin, different types of Yoga, components of Yoga and various interesting facts preparing the audience to learn more about Yoga. He mentioned the different forms of Yoga and informed that the most common form of Yoga that general public practice is “Raja Yoga”. He stressed the point that Yoga is a lifestyle and not just a form of exercise. A yoga practitioner needed much more than performing “aasanas”, he needed to control his mind and consciously follow good diet. He explained that strained mind is one of the main causes for most of the diseases and quoted a North Karnataka saying “Biddaga Niddi, Yeddaga Laddi” which signified healthiness of the body. Sudhesh ji stressed the fact that Yoga being our core knowledge is today being practiced & propagated by other countries in altered forms. He urged Rotarians to support and save Yoga knowledge by means of journals, magazines, papers and other forms. The crisp presentation gave some “Dos & donts” before winding up. Few of the Rotarians discussed their thoughts in Q&A session. Rtn.Harish propsed vote of thanks.

The Rotary Foundation Trustees have approved a new model for funding the Foundation's operating costs. Effective 1 July 2015, the Foundation will direct 5 percent of Annual Fund donations to help pay administrative and fund development expenses and to build a strong operating reserve. The Foundation will also draw on other funding sources, including 5 percent of cash contributions for global grants and up to 10 percent of select corporate gifts.

Our current method of using investment earnings to fund these costs is no longer financially sustainable in today's unpredictable markets. Recognizing that financial markets will continue to be volatile, the Trustees developed a new model to achieve long-term financial sustainability.

A deadly beetle has inspired an ATM protection system that will defend itself from thieves.

The system was inspired by the bombardier beetle's

ability to spray its enemies with near-boiling acid. The beetle stores the ingredients for the acid in two separate chambers in its body, which prevents them from mixing until it is ready to attack.

Following the beetle's lead, the team from ETH Zurich built a system of two honeycomb structures filled with chemicals. The structures were filled with either hydrogen peroxide or manganese dioxide, with the two chemicals separated by a thin lacquer. The lacquer will break easily if subjected to impact, which will allow the chemicals to mix and cause a reaction–such as a foam of dye and nanoparticles that would mark the banknotes (and possibly the thief, as well). The system can function without electricity, and could provide a low-cost alternative to current money protection systems.
