Akshaya Suresh '15, SaybrookRichard U. Light Fellowship for Language Study in East AsiaSeoul, South Korea – Summer 2014The history of Cheonggyecheon is as winding as the river itself. Throughoutthe centuries the stream has symbolized many of South Korea’s best qualities.Once a beautiful, natural stream it was first developed as an innovative, opendrainage system during the Joseon Dynasty and then covered with concrete tomake a highway to service the needs of the booming post-Korean Wareconomy. Yet decades after peace had been won, peacefulness became harderand harder to find within the booming city. So Cheonggyecheon transformedagain, restored to its original form. Now it has become a gem of serenityamongst the throngs and a symbol of all that I found Seoul to be — apatchwork of innovation, history, drive, industry, beauty, and peace.

Allie Krause '15, Timothy Dwight Fellowship: Steven Clark Senior Essay Travel GrantVolcanoes National Park, Rwanda – Summer 2014Whenever you mention Rwanda, the first thing that comes to mind will always be the 1994Genocide, in which 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu moderates were killed by the extremist Hutu Power.People rarely consider the breathtaking natural beauty of the country, known as "le pays des millecollines," or the country of a thousand hills. Though my purpose for visiting Rwanda was to lookat gender in governance and post-conflict reconstruction, what struck me most was just howstunning the country is, from the early morning haze that veils the clay-red and bright green hills,to the vibrant wildlife, and the amazing people. This photo was taken while visiting the VolcanoesNational Park, near Rwanda's border with the DRC. We trekked for hours through bamboo andthick brush to visit the Susa gorilla family, the largest in the wild at 39. Here, one of the teensenjoys a spot of lunch while watching some of her family members rolling around in the leaves.

Anna Evtushenko '17, Yale-NUSYale Summer Session: Santiago – Introduction to Observational AstrophysicsAtacama Desert, Chile – Summer 2014Traveling, as well as learning, may be simply letting yourself get lost —in unfamiliar places, ideas, and people. Letting go and holding on all at once.At times, alone, at others — together. Being mesmerized by the Southernstars and stunned by the beauty of mountains during the day. Feelingsick, cold, off your feet, out of bounds and whatever it is they callthe comfort zone. Only half a world away finally realizingwhat is closest, most needed, most longed for.And watching scattered thoughtstake shape.

Each year, thousands of Chinese visitors descend upon the sleepy Mongoliansteppes for the annual Nadaam festival, a celebration of the harvest bounty. It is at this exact moment of the year that the sky isbluest and the grass is greenest, and it appears as if the horizon goeson indefinitely.

Carlos Gould '15, TrumbullEnvironmental FellowshipHimachal Pradesh, India – Summer 2014Much like the woman featured here, nearly three billion people worldwide cook on wood-burningstoves. Consequently, women and their children are exposed to tremendous levels of smoke. Indoor airpollution increases the risk of respiratory infections, the leading cause of death among childrenyounger than 5. I spent this summer in northern India studying improved cook stoves, a technologicalinnovation that reduces indoor air pollution. I spent my days with women as they cooked for theirfamilies, learning about their daily lives and discussing the potential impacts of an improved cookstove. They spoke of the culture and history of their traditional, mud stoves, and of the taste of therotis they produced. This photograph shows the restricted lives of a woman and her daughter, confined to a small, smoke-filled attic. Beyond that hardship, though, is the beautiful story of a womanproud of her heritage, dressed in traditional garb, resilient and responsive to the changing world.

Lucy Wang '17, MorseDomestic Internship: Alaska Sitka, Alaska, USA – Summer 2014There was something so mystic about the forest of old pinetrees in Sitka, Alaska. Maybe it was the totem poles thatseemed to grow with the trees, or the 17 hours of sunlighteach day, but I felt transported to a place of where peoplereally lived with the land, instead of just living on the land.

Talia Katz '17, Ezra StilesFellowship: South Asian Studies Council Language Study Fellowship,Linck Fellowship (Ezra Stiles College)Damarang Village, Dolakha District, Nepal – Summer 2014During the first weeks of the monsoon season, local communities come together to plant theupcoming rice crop. Entire villages work together to develop a schedule which provides agriculturalsupport to all family units. While on a walk through the hills of the Dolakha district, these womencalled out and invited me to help them in their rice field. For the rest of the afternoon, we workedtogether- planting, singing, laughing, and sharing an occasional snack or two. During one point inthe afternoon, the rain began to pour and so we all put on Nepali style "Umbrella Hats." As weplanted rice, the women opened up and shared many stories regarding their upbringings, hopes, andfuture values. This encounter is characteristic of the rich ways in which spontaneous invitations andincredible generosity fueled language learning and cultural immersion over the course of the summer.

Zoe Kitchel '15, MorseStudy Abroad: Organization for Tropical Studies in South AfricaSkukuza, Kruger National Park, South Africa – Spring 2014The elephants dominated the landscape of the African savannas. What struck me most, beyond theirsheer mass, was the overwhelming connection among members of the herd. Even we, as outsiders ofa different species, could sense the bond between the creatures. The presence of a young elephantemphasized the sense of undying devotion and care in the herd, as the females constantly encircledthe little ones, shielding them from our fascinated eyes. Such a clear view of a young member of theherd took us off guard, and led to a moment of silence as we watched them slowly meander acrossthe dirt road, just meters in front of our open air vehicle. One cannot help but be humbled by such aninteraction, and my adventures in South Africa during the spring of 2014 involved countless momentssuch as this. From dancing late into the night in a rural village in the north, to seeing species in CapeTown that exist nowhere else in the world, I was always struggling to catch my breath.

Margaret Kandel '15, SaybrookStudy Abroad: Sarah Lawrence College in FlorenceAssisi, Italy – Spring 2014While hiking in the hills above Assisi, I came across a nun sitting in solitude by the ruins of anabandoned fortress, contemplating the same hills that St. Francis looked upon centuries earlier. Italyis a country steeped in rich cultural history; since antiquity, it has been a hub of western culture andart and home to some of the world’s greatest thinkers, inventors, and artists. The country’spowerful sense of history is inescapable. I could see it everywhere: in the beautiful churches andgrand cathedrals, in the classical ruins and art museums, in the exquisite carvings, ironwork, andpaintings found around every corner of the narrow medieval cobblestone streets that I walked eachday, and even in the majestic hills of Assisi. Individuals come from far and wide to experience thecountry’s rich sense of history, and I too felt a personal connection. I knew, however, that I wouldbe just a small part of Italy’s historical legacy – a revelation both humbling as well as exciting.

Tess Maggio '16, DavenportStudy Abroad: SIT Nepal – Geoscience in the HimalayaPokhara, Nepal – Summer 2014Phewa Lake is central to life in Pokhara, Nepal. Whether in regards to tourism, hydroelectricity generation, agriculture, domestic uses, or the fishing industry, thissparkling and magical lake drives the city. Yet the peaceful scene captured here concealsthe dangers the lake faces; over the past 50 years it has decreased 50% in area, andpollution is rampant. Through my time of geological study and research, made possibleby the Yale ISA, I witnessed many such instances in Nepal – mountaintop vistas areinherently connected to landslides, convenient living locations come with pollutedwater, more development increases the potential destruction from earthquakes. In themidst of this, moments of peace must be cherished, and the gratitude felt in such timescan be used as fuel for actively taking steps towards public safety measures.

Jiahe Gu '16, BerkeleyRichard U. Light Fellowship for Language Study in East AsiaHuayin, China – Summer 2014I passed this gentleman while hiking through Mount Hua in Shaanxiprovince. Inspired by my summer program to practice speaking Chinesewhenever possible, I struck up a conversation with him. With a ratherdifficult regional dialect, he told me about how his children moved away tothe city and about how much he misses them. Pointing to his dog, helaughed about how it keeps him company these days. Having wavedgoodbye to my grandparents after visiting them just few days ago, I reallyempathized with him. Today, this photograph helps remind me of the painurbanization and emigration can inflict on the people left behind. It remindsme to call far away family often and to always keep them in my thoughts.

Hailey Winston '17, Ezra StilesInternational Internship: IstanbulCappadocia, Turkey – Summer 2014Every corner turned in Turkey presented a new adventure. From roaming the Grand Bazaar to riding the ferry betweencontinents to marveling at the Hagia Sophia, every new dayspawned excitement. When traveling to near and far cornersof the country on the weekends, we saw several niches ofTurkey. Many of us had the chance to explore Capadoccia, ahighly historical region lush with underground cities, fairychimneys, and cave homes.
