Head Coach - Jeff Neubauer

Jeff Neubauer, who made an immediate impact in his first year as the head men’s basketball coach at Fordham by leading the Rams to one of their most successful seasons in almost a decade, enters his third season on Rose Hill in 2017-2018. In his inaugural year at Fordham, Neubauer led the Rams to a 17-14 overall record, 8-10 in the Atlantic 10, and an appearance in the 2016 Colleg-eInsiders.com Tournament (CIT), Fordham’s first postseason appearance since 1992. The 17 overall wins and eight conference wins were the most since 2006-2007. The Rams went 14-5 in the Rose Hill Gym, the most home wins ever in school history. The Rams also used another Neubauer spe-cialty to reach their success in 2015-16, hitting a school-record 243 long-range field goals. Last year, the Rams were one of four Atlantic 10 teams to have a winning record in conference road games (5-4) with the five road conference wins tying the squad with the 2006-2007 team for most A-10 road wins in a season. At home, Fordham continued its non-confer-ence dominance in the Rose Hill Gym, going 5-2, and the Rams are now 19-4 in non-conference home games over the past three years. Over the past two years, Neubauer has led the Rams to 15 Atlantic 10 victories, one more confer-ence win than the previous seven years combined, including Fordham’s first ever win over VCU last winter. Statistically in 2016-2017, Fordham ranked among the NCAA top five in four categories: steals/game (third - 9.8), turnovers forced/game (third - 17.53), total steals (fourth - 315) and turnover margin (fifth - 4.5). Fordham’s success in 2015-2016 was predi-cated on a strong defense, a Neubauer trademark. The Rams were second in the Atlantic 10 and tenth in the nation in steals/game (8.5) while also ranking 14th nationally in turnovers forced/game (15.74) and 24th with 263 total steals, the fourth-best single season total in school history. In 12 years as a head coach, Neubauer has a 218-167 career record, going 188-134 at Eastern Kentucky. He has guided six of his twelve teams to postseason play, including in four of the past five years. As a result of his success in year one, Neubauer was awarded a contract extension through the 2020-2021 season. Prior to joining the Rams, Neubauer served as the head coach at Eastern Kentucky for ten years, leading the Colonels to five 20-win seasons,

including in each of his last three years, and five trips to national postseason tournaments, including a berth in the 2014 NCAA Championships where the Colonels nearly upset second-seeded Kansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Neubauer’s 188 career wins at Eastern Ken-tucky is second only to Paul S. McBrayer’s 214 at the school and his overall mark as the Colonels’ leader is 188-134. Neubauer’s last five seasons were like none other at Eastern Kentucky. The Colonels’ 101 victories over that stretch are the most during any five-year period in school history. EKU won a school-record 25 games in 2012-13 and accumulated 70 victories over the past three seasons. Despite being picked to finish third in the Ohio Valley Conference East Division in 2014-2015, Neubauer guided the Colonels to a first place fin-ish, earning the No. 2 seed in the OVC tournament. The Colonels finished the year 21-12, falling in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). In 2013-2014, Neubauer led the Colonels to the Ohio Valley Conference title as Eastern Kentucky won three games in three days at the tournament. The Colonels finished the season with a 24-10 mark and were second in the nation in turnover margin, fifth in three-point field goals/game and sixth in steals. Following the 2013-2014 season, Neubauer was named one of 15 finalists for the 2014 Hugh Durham Award, presented annually to the nation’s top mid-major coach. He was also selected as the 2013 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 19 Coach of the Year. Neubauer’s 2012-13 EKU squad finished 25-10, setting the school record for wins in a season, and earned a spot in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). Eastern Kentucky finished with three more wins than the previous program-best of 22, including the program’s first victory in a national postseason tournament game in 68 years. Before arriving at Eastern Kentucky, Neubauer served three seasons as the top assistant at West Virginia under head coach John Beilein where he helped fuel the Mountaineers’ rapid rise to national prominence. Neubauer served under Beilein at the Univer-sity of Richmond for five years before heading to West Virginia. The Spiders won 100 games during that time and earned a berth in the 1998 NCAA Championship. FORDHAM FIRST INTHREE-POINTERS

Did you know???? Fordham was the first team in the NCAA to use the three-point shot? The first time a three-point shot was used experimentally in a game was on Febru-ary 7, 1945 when Columbia defeated Fordham, 73-58. The three-point line was set at 21 feet from the basket and Columbia scored 11 “long goals” to Fordham’s nine. Also, free throwers had an option to take their shots from the regular 15-foot distance for one point or from 21 feet for two points. Eight “long fouls” were made during the game.

The game also featured a 12-foot wide free throw lane, a move that would be ad-opted by the NCAA eleven years later.

SLANINA DOUBLES UP• Junior forward Prokop Slanina recorded his first career double-double with 19 points and eleven rebounds in the win over LIU on November 13.• The 19 points and eleven rebounds were both career-highs for Slanina, who is averaging 10.3 ppg, second best on the team, and 5.3 rpg in 2017-2018.

UNPROVEN• Even though the 2017-2018 Fordham men’s basketball team returns 12 players from last year, most of the returning Rams are unproven.• The exception to the rule is junior guard Joseph Chartouny, who has appeared 55 games over the past two years, averaging 11.7 ppg and 4.7 rpg while also dishing out 305 assists and recording 150 steals.• Senior guard Will Tavares, the lone scholarship senior on the roster with Division I experience, averaged 5.6 ppg and 2.2 rpg in his first season with Fordham in 2016-2017 after transferring from Monroe College, while senior guard Perris Hicks did not see ac-tion in his first season in the Bronx due to injury, after transferring from San Bernardino Valley College.• Other returning Rams with experience include graduate student guard Nemanja Zar-kovic, who missed most of last year with an injury, junior forwards Jesse Bunting and Prokop Slanina (who missed time with injuries last winter), junior guard David Pekárek (who also missed time with injuries last year), sophomore forward Chuba Ohams and sophomore guard Cavit Havsa.• As a group, the Rams return 908 points (43.4% of last year’s total) and 451 rebounds

(49.4% of last year’s total).

PROTECTING THEIR TURF• Over the past three years, Fordham is 20-5 in non-conference home games (5-2 in 2013-14, 9-0 last year and 5-2 last year).• Overall, the Rams are 23-15 at home over the past two years.

WINNING ON THE ROAD• The 2016-2017 Rams were one of four Atlantic 10 teams to have a winning record in conference road games (5-4).• The five road conference wins tied the squad with the 2006-2007 team for most A-10 road wins in a season.

A-10 WINNING WAYS• Over the past two years, the Fordham University men’s basketball squad has won 15 Atlantic 10 Conference games (eight in 2015-2016 and seven in 2016-2017).• The 15 wins is one more than Rams managed over the previous seven years.

FORDHAM WINS 1,500th GAME• The 73-62 win over Rider on November 23, 2016, was the 1,500th all-time win for the Fordham Rams in their 114 seasons of varsity basketball.• The Rams became the 69th team to accumulate 1,500 wins.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING• Fordham University’s home court, the Rose Hill Gymnasium which was named as one of the four “Ca-thedrals of College Basketball” by ESPN The Maga-zine, is the oldest gym still being used by an NCAA Division I basketball team. The 3,200-seat gym opened on January 16, 1925 for a game between Fordham and Boston College. The Rams took the opener 46-16 in a game refereed by one of the University’s most promi-nent alumni, “The Fordham Flash”, Frankie Frisch. • The Gym was one of the largest on-campus facilities at the time it was built, earning the nickname “The Prairie” because of its large floor space. The original configuration had no end zone stands and a seating capacity of 2,100 but several standing room crowds of 6,000 were reported in the late 1920’s. Since its opening in 1925, the gym has seen numerous renova-tions, adding new seating, scoreboards and public address systems. • The arena has been in continuous use by Fordham’s basketball teams since its opening with the exception of the World War II years, when it was used for a barracks. • The Rose Hill Gym has been the site of many legend-ary college and high school basketball games including Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s final high school game and the 1988 Tolentine-Archbishop Molloy Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Championship game, billed by the New York Newsday as the “Best High School Game of the 80’s”. • The Rose Hill Gym has been named as one of the Top Ten arenas by USA Today and was featured in the 2011-12 ESPN The Magazine College Basketball issue as one of four Cathedrals of College Basketball.

WHAT’S NEXT?• The Rams will continue their current home stand by hosting the East Tennessee State University Buc-caneers in the historic Rose Hill Gym on Wednesday, November 29, at 7:00 p.m.• The game will be the second meeting between the two schools on the hardwood.• ETSU won the first meeting last year in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the season-opener for both teams.
