ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Pannalal Girdharlal Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (PGDAV) College, founded in 1957 by DAV College

Managing Society, is a NAAC accredited institution. It draws its traditions of excellence and

learning from two eminent institutions of higher education in India: University of Delhi, the

top ranking, government funded central university in India and DAV Education Trust,

world's largest NGO in the field of education, that aims at holistic education by both being

open to new western thought and at the same time remaining anchored to the Indian cultural

moorings.

LOCATION

Situated at one of the prime and easily accessible locations in Nehru Nagar (Opposite

Srinivaspuri) on Ring Road. PGDAV College is well connected to all parts of Delhi and the

NCR region. The college has been consistently enrolling students from satellite townships

such as Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Noida.

Lajpat Nagar and Moolchand metro stations are located very close to the college. A new

metro station is coming up just outside the college gate.

COURSES ON OFFER

The College seeks to provide highest standards in knowledge and academic practices to its

students. A co-educational institution, PGDAV College undertakes teaching in eleven

disciplines / departments that offer undergraduate courses of the University of Delhi in

the broad disciplines of Arts, Commerce, Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences.

It also offers guidance in post graduate courses in four subjects, viz. Commerce, Hindi,

Mathematics and Political Science.

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY

Over the years, the College has emerged as a centre of excellence under the stewardship of its

highly qualified and experienced faculty. Many faculty members are associated with post

graduate teaching, where they are guiding students at post graduate, M. Phil. and doctoral

levels. Some of our ex-faculty members have achieved accolades in the areas of

administration (IAS, etc.) and politics, among other fields.

Today PGDAV College stands out in providing the latest trends in knowledge enhancement, dissemination and assimilation for its students. The college has, over the years, been nurturing extremely talented and academically bright students in all disciplines. Some have joined the departments of Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University as faculty members. The Placement cell of the college is in a continuous process of developing alliance with more and better potential recruiters and hopes to achieve even greater success in future. In the year 2015-2016, 340 students were placed in various companies.

BEYOND ACADEMICS.... NON FORMAL AVENUES OF LEARNING

Apart from ensuring smooth, disciplined and organised learning environment, PGDAV

college provides supportive learning experience through a number of extra and co-

curricular societies and academic associations. The events organized by various

departmental councils at intra-college and inter-college levels enrich and enhance the

learning process of our students. This provides ample opportunities to our students to

express themselves creatively, learn useful skills, broaden their horizons, and indulge in a

healthy spirit of competition. Our students regularly participate in academic and co-

curricular activities at various platforms and are well integrated with larger learning milieu

of Delhi University. Altogether, the students are provided ample opportunities to sharpen

their intellectual and cultural faculties. The Cultural Society of the college, Hyperion has

been consistently performing well over the years, the awards tally going upto 80 in the last

academic year 2015-16. Our students won awards for the college in Western Music, Street

play, Indian Music, Poetry Competition, Quiz Competition, Debate and distinguished

The college strives to provide an environment that nurtures qualities of humanism and

inculcates values of team work, innovation and initiative. The NCC cadets and NSS

volunteers of the college are trained in this tradition and they have brought good name to

the college. Various events are held in the college throughout the year, including the College

Festival where students are encouraged to actively organize and participate in the events.

Excursions and field trips with academic and learning focus supplement these events and

provide non-formal avenues to the students to experience holistic learning. The college

magazine, Ankur, seeks to provide a platform to our students for developing their writing

and literary skills. PGDAV College is well-known for helping and encouraging sports talent.

The sports persons have been consistently bringing laurels not only to the institution but to

our country too. The college has nurtured various sports persons in the field of athletics,

cricket and many other fields who have done the college and the nation proud. Manoj

Prabhakar, Raman Lamba, Atul Wasan, Parwinder Awana and Anureet Singh are some of the

illustrious alumni of the college. One of our students, Lalit Mohan, is a member of Indian

Taekwondo Squad.

The college can boast of meeting the latest in infrastructural requirements of an

educational institution. The College campus is Wi-Fi enabled and students have access to a

fully functional Computer Hub to access internet and various Delhi University Library

System resources. The college has added smart classrooms equipped with overhead

projectors. The college has lift facility for its disabled and physically challenged students.

Round the clock RO water system has been installed. The college has a state of the art

conference room. It is a stage for hosting artistic, academic and cultural events.

*Students seeking admission to M.A./M.Sc. (Mathematics), M.A. (Hindi)/(Political Science) and M.Com. courses are required to get themselves registered with the Office of South Delhi Campus, DhaulaKuan, New Delhi. They will receive their Provisional Admission slips from there and will be admitted to the College on the production of those admission slips.

Note : (i) Admission to the undergraduate programme shall be based on eligibility criteria as prescribed by the University of Delhi for each Course.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. All applicants seeking admission to the College must read the Bulletin of Information

issued by the University of Delhi. The detailed version of the same is available on Delhi

University's website www.du.ac.in. The minimum eligibility requirements for admission

to various courses are as specified in that bulletin.

2. Admissions are made purely on merit.

3. An applicant must have passed with minimum required percentage of marks in Senior

School Certificate (10+2) or the Indian School Certificate (12 years) or an equivalent

Examination recognized by Delhi University. The University will have the final authority

in deciding about disputed cases, if any.

4. The applicants must present themselves in person for admission with relevant

documents. No application in absentia will be entertained.

5. All selected candidates along with parents/ guardian will have to appear for an

interaction with the Principal of the college before the admission is finally confirmed.

6. All admissions are provisional and subject to the final approval of University of Delhi.

7. All students seeking admission to College against the seats reserved for children/widows/

wives of officers and personnel of Armed Forces including paramilitary personnel as

notified from time to time and foreign students, shall be registered centrally by the

University and subject to availability of seats, assigned to the College.

Guidelines and Procedures for Admission on the Basis of Sports/ ECA

Admissions on the basis of sports will be organized as per the Delhi University / DU Sports

Council.

lMaximum 5% of total available seats are reserved for Sports and Extra Curricular

lA student once admitted on the basis of Sports is required to give an undertaking in

writing on judicial stamp paper of Rs. 100, that he/she will participate in his/her

respective game throughout his/her stay in the College, failing which, his/her admission is

liable to be cancelled.

lStudent admitted on the basis of ECA is required to give an undertaking in writing that he

/she will participate in his/her respective activity throughout his/her stay in the college,

failing which, his/her admission is liable to be cancelled.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

1. 1% concession in cut off to girl candidates is permitted for all the under graduate courses for the year 2016-17.

2. Admission to the undergraduate programme at the college shall be based on the eligibility criteria prescribed by the University of Delhi for the academic year 2016-17.

3. Admission to all the courses are routed through Admission Committee constituted for the purpose.

4. Candidates who qualify according to the criteria stated herein and have applied for admission to the Course will report to the Departmental Admission incharge with the following documents in original with two sets of self attested photocopies.

a) Photocopy of the Delhi University online registration form.

b) Class X Board Examination Certificate

c) Class X Marks-Sheet

d) Class XII Marks-Sheet

e) Class XII Provisional Certificate / Original Certificate

f) Character Certificate (recent)

g) SC/ST/PWD/CW/KM Certificate (in the name of the candidate) issued by the competent authority.

h) OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) Certificate (in the name of the candidate) issued by the competent authority.

I) Transfer Certificate from School / College as well as Migration Certificate from Board University are required from those students who have passed senior secondary exam from outside Delhi.

j) Three passport size self-attested photographs.

k) Proof of residence/permanent address must be furnished. It will be verified and if found incorrect, admission will be cancelled.

5. After obtaining the recommendations of the departmental admission incharge, the candidate will meet designated office assistants for verification of the documents submitted along with the admission form.

6. After the documents are verified the candidate will report to the Convenor of Admission Committee for admission.

7. The candidate will then meet the Principal of the college along with his/her parent/guardian, deposit fees online to Delhi University within stipulated time.

8. No individual intimation regarding admission will be sent to the applicants.

Notes

I. Admission Committee works on notified days from 9 a.m to 1 p.m only.

II. The Admission form must be filled in CAPITAL LETTERS only.

III. The college may deny admission to an applicant if he/she fails to submit one/more of the documents listed above.

IV. Forms, incomplete in any respect, will be rejected.

V. Seeking admission on the basis of false information or identity, misrepresentation or by submitting false certificates/documents is unlawful and will cause cancellation of admission. Such cases are liable to be reported to the police by the college.

VI. It is made clear that if any false attestation/falsified records are detected, the student will be debarred from attending any course in the university / or its college for next five years and in addition, a criminal case under relevant sections of IPC (Viz 470, 471, 474 etc.) will be instituted against him/her.

VII. In case of any difficulty, student can approach any member of the Grievance Redressal Committee.

VIII. If any rule / information contained in college prospectus is at variance with University Bulletin of Information, then rule / information issued by Delhi University shall prevail.

All the fees and charges for the academic year 2016-2017 are payable by students at the time of admission. The refund of fees after admission shall be made in accordance with the rules of the University of Delhi.

FEE CONCESSION

The college grants fee concession to the needy students and outstanding sportsmen. The continuance of the concession in the fee depends on good behaviour, regular attendance of the student and satisfactory progress in studies. An application for concession should be made on prescribed form available from the college office as soon as the notice is put up.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Merit and Merit-cum-Means ScholarshipsThe college awards a number of Merit Scholarships for brilliant students & Merit- cum- Means Scholarship for brilliant and needy students. Students may contact the Principal in this regard.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT

lThe students shall be governed by the University prescribed norms. They are expected to check the same on their own.

lRegarding attendance, special concessions as per University rules are given to students of NCC, NSS and other activities for participation in such activities.

Students are advised to periodically check up on their attendance with their teachers/ college website. The attendance record is displayed on the notice board at the end of each month & may also be informed to the parents if required.

N.B. Benefit of medical leave will become available only if the application with medical certificate and fitness is submitted within 7 days of rejoining the classes.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES

(As per University Rules)

GENERAL RULES

1. Attendance: Minimum attendance as required under the university rules for lectures, tutorials, preceptorials etc. must be obtained by each student.

2. Periodical Test/ Examination: whenever offered, must be taken compulsorily.

3. Free Periods: These are to be utilized for study in the Reading room and Library.

4. Cleanliness: College premises must be kept free of litter.

5. Telephone: The office telephone is not meant for use by the students.

6. Identity Card: Each student of the college shall always carry his/her Identity Card. He/she will not be entertained by the college office unless he/she shows his/her Identity Card. Furthermore, a student may be asked to show his/her Identity Card by any member of the college staff. The defaulters shall be strictly dealt with as per rules.

7. The students are not allowed to bring outsiders with them in the college premises. Any unauthorized person found in the college campus shall be dealt strictly and will be handed over to the police.

8. Students must make it a habit to see the Notice Board and college website regularly for latest communications.

9. Smoking: Smoking and consumption of intoxicants by the students within the premises of the college is strictly prohibited. Delhi University is partnering with Delhi Police and World Lung Foundation-South Asia in promoting a tobacco free environment. As a step in that direction, smoking is banned in our college. Dr. Pinki Punia has been appointed as the Nodal Officer for the purpose.

10. Any information desired from the office should be sought at the respective counters of the office.

11. Students are expected not to loiter around aimlessly or make noise in corridors/ lobby.

12. Staff Room: The Staff room is strictly for use by teaching staff. Students are not to loiter around or enter the staff room without permission.

13. Students are free to meet the Principal for redressal of their grievances between 11 AM to 12 Noon on working days.

14. Students must switch off their mobile phones before entering the class. If mobile is found active, fine of Rs. 500 shall be imposed. Students will be penalised, if they use cellphones for communication, including SMS/ MMS or any other form of entertainment in the class room, library and labs.

15. Only the students of II and III year can contest elections for posts of office bearers of the college Students' Union provided they have cleared all papers and have secured at least 50% marks in the University examinations in the preceding year.

ANTI-RAGGING REGULATION

1. Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited within the college premises.

2. Any individual or collective act or practice of ragging constitutes gross indiscipline and shall be dealt with under Ordinance XV-C, of University of Delhi.

3. Ragging for the purposes of this, ordinarily means any act, conduct, or practice by which dominant power or status of senior students is brought to bear on students freshly enrolled or students who are in any way considered junior or inferior by other students and includes individual or collective acts or practices which

a) involve physical, assault or threat and/or use of physical force.

b) violate dignity and honour of students.

MAINTENANCE OF DISCIPLINE

The students are required to observe discipline in the college. As per Ordinance XV-B of the University, the following will constitute breach of discipline:

lPhysical assault or threat to use physical force, against any member of the teaching and non-teaching staff of any Institution/Department and against any student within the University of Delhi

lCarrying or use of, or threat to use any weapon.

lAny violation of the provisions of the Civil Rights Protection Act 1976.

lViolation of dignity, and honor of students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Tribes.

lAny practice, whether verbal or otherwise, derogatory to women.

lAny attempt at bribing or corruption in any manner.

lDestruction of institutional property.

lCreating ill-will on religious or communal grounds.

lCausing disruption in any manner of the academic functioning of the University system.

ACADEMIC AND OTHER SUPPORT INFRASTRUCTURE

Library and Reading Room

Library is the vital and integral part of an academic institution. The College Library has a rich collection of books and journals on various subjects. It also facilitates access to large number of electronic resources available through Delhi University Library System(DULS). It includes the reference sources, bibliographic sources, statistical sources and full text sources. Besides this the library also provides books to needy students for one year from SAF(Student Aid Fund). For better learning and reading, visually impaired students are aided/ supported by JAWS screen reading software and Angel, all-in-one Daisy Reader.

The college has a very well stocked library with more than 85,000 books, journals, periodicals and other reference material. It also has a well furnished reading room. The library and the reading room facilities, accessible between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday (working days), are open to all the students and staff of college. Each student is offered library membership at the time of admission.

lFor loan purposes the books are organized into two sections, general and reference.

lEach undergraduate course student is entitled to borrow four books at a time.

lEach post-graduate student is entitled to borrow five books at a time.

lLibrary membership will be valid till the student is on college rolls.

lPeriodicals, directories, encyclopedias, which might be difficult to replace and other such works as may be declared reference books by the Librarian shall not be lent out.

lMembers are not allowed to sub lend the books of the library.

lStudents who return books later than due date will be liable to pay a fine as decided by the college authorities from time to time.

Library Timings for Issue and Return of Books

lBooks from General Section are issued and returned from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

lBooks from Reference Section are issued for consultation in the library against Reference Card from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Students may get one book issued from reference section for overnight study only.

Seminar Hall

The college takes pride in having a very well equipped, fully air-conditioned and acoustically well maintained Seminar Hall. In use throughout the year, it witnesses many artistic, academic and cultural activities hosted by the college. Eminent speakers and other noted personalities have been visiting the college and sharing their knowledge, wisdom and skills with the students and faculty in the form of lectures, debates, discussions and workshops.

Computer Hub

The college has a fully functional and well equipped computer hub with access to internet and Delhi University Library System.

College Canteen and other eating joints

The college has a spacious well furnished canteen, offering variety of fresh and hygienically prepared food at subsidized rates. It is one of the largest canteens in University of Delhi. Besides the canteen the college has other eating joints offering snacks and soft drinks.

Bank

The college has a branch of the Central Bank of India through which the students avail of various banking facilities.

Career Counseling Club

The college firmly believes in preparing the students for a productive career. Provision of academic inputs is essential but certainly not sufficient to meet this goal. Therefore, the Career Counseling Club helps the students in planning their career while they are pursuing their graduation. The college arranges seminars and interactive sessions involving prospective employers to enable the students to learn about various career opportunities that await them. The placement cell then supplements the efforts of the Career Counseling Club, which prepares the students to face the challenges of professional arena.

Placement Cell

At PGDAV College, students are trained well to acquire an all round profile with knowledge, skill and right attitude in them in good measure. Those who want to join jobs after graduation are provided opportunities through college placement cell which acts as a liaison between desirous students and the potential recruiters. The performance of the placement cell this year has been unprecedented. Many prestigious companies like Ernst Young (EY), Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Libsys Ltd, Aon Hewitt, Genpact, Concentrix corporation, IBM, ICICI, IIFM, etc. visited our college this year for placements. 340 students got final placement and around 25 were selected for various internship programs. 20 students cleared MSME e-learning EDP. The Cell is in the continuous process of developing alliance with more and better potential recruiters.

Hyperion - The Cultural Society

PGDAV College fosters a profuse cultural environment. The college has an extremely active cultural body HYPERION, an umbrella organisation further divided into 10 societies. This year Hyperion has won over 80 prizes in various intra and inter university events such as dance, debating, self-composed poetry recitation, street and stage play, rap and beat boxing, vocal music, painting and street art, computer gaming etc. EXPLORANZA, the annual talent hunt for newly admitted students was organized on 17th September, 2015. Shri Rahul Dev, noted journalist and languages activist, and Shri Arvind Gaur, renowned theater personality were the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively. First year students competed enthusiastically for prizes in various categories like dance, music, theater, fine arts, computer skills etc. The annual cultural festival, AAGHAZ, organised on the 1st and 2nd of February, 2016 celebrated 'Ishq-e-dilli' as its theme. It drew participation from students of various universities both in and out of Delhi and was graced by celebrities like Bhojpuri Superstar Manoj Tiwari, noted satirist and columnist

Alok Puranik, acclaimed singer Gajendra Verma, popular band Astitva and Miss India Earth Aital Khosla.

Along with these two main events, competitions keep happening in the college throughout the year. The students are constantly exposed to a lively learning atmosphere giving them wings to pursue their dreams in whatever field they may wish for. Hyperion consists of the following societies:

Sports Activities

Physical Education in the college offers the students opportunities to learn and excel in the following sports and games, for both men and women:

Apart from the above, special coaching camps are organized from time to time in aerobics, athletics, basketball, cricket, football, taekwondo, volleyball, yoga, etc. Inter-college and intra- college tournaments are organized for students, as well as staff members. The department takes care that the differently-abled students are not left out and organizes special competitions for them.

Students' Union

Every student is a member of the college Students' Union. Participation in students' union activities is an opportunity for training in organizational skills and democratic leadership. Every year elections are held as per the university notification and college guidelines for the following posts for which nominations are invited from the students.

The Students' Union is expected to take active part in the organization of functions and activities. It contributes immensely in making the corporate life of the college more meaningful and memorable.

College Magazine, Ankur

The annual publication, Ankur reflects the literary, educational and sports activities going on in the college. It is also a platform to encourage budding writers to develop their literary talents and to give voice to their thoughts, opinions and ideas on various issues of social, political and literary significance. Articles, poems, stories and so on are published in English, Hindi, and Sanskrit. There is a team of student editors guided by advisors from the teaching faculty who select contributions for publication.

SATARK – Consumer Club

The aim of Satark, the consumer club of PGDAV College, is to make students good consumers by making them inquisitive, a v o i d i n g i m p u l s e b u y i n g a n d understanding their rights as consumers. It arms them to guard against unfair practices to create a healthy, safe, honest and quality conscious society. It is a subsidiary of Consumers’ Forum, an NGO, registered under the Societies Act, 1860 and is an associate member of Consumer Coordination Council (CCC), Government of India. iii. The application of such candidates will be received online only for 3 days, each in two phases.
