About…The Catholic Institute for Holocaust StudiesSeton Hill University, a Catholic liberal arts university, initiated a national Catholic movement focused on Holocaust studies in 1987. This initiative was supported by the call of Pope John Paul II to recognize the significance of the SHOAH, the Holocaust, and to “promote the necessary historical and religious studies on the event which concerns the whole of humanity today” (8/8/87).

The Holocaust Institute in Israel is specifically designed for educators working in Catholic institutions throughout the United States. The program will equip participants to enter into serious discussion on the causes of antisemitism and the Holocaust with serious consideration of the Catholic perspective. It seeks through planned meetings to discuss the shaping of appropriate curricular responses at Catholic Institutions in light of the Holocaust.

The International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad VashemThe international school is responsible year-round for all educational activities held at Yad Vashem—the most comprehensive center of Holocaust commemoration in the world. The Shoah is seen as a seminal event in human history which confronts and challenges Jews and non-Jews alike. The institute for educators focuses on the historical dimensions in order to best grapple with the moral and philosophical issues that are raised.

Lectures/Field TripsThe Institute convenes six days a week with occasional evening sessions, and includes lectures, films, pedagogic workshops, group discussions, and survivor testimonies. Field trips, which provide a break from the classroom, include Jerusalem old and new, Tel Aviv’s Palmach and Diaspora Museums along with the site of ancient Jaffa and the Mediterranean Sea, Ghetto Fighters’ Museum in Northern Israel, Tiberias, Rosh Hanikra, Sea of Galilee, Capharnaum, Tabgha, Mount of Beatitudes, Nazareth, Qumram, Dead Sea and Masada. There are also opportunities to attend religious services. Because of length of the program, climate and demands of study and travel in Israel, participants should be in good physical condition. We encourage you to have a check-up with your personal physician prior to participating in the program.

Academic Credit OptionSeton Hill University, through an academic agreement with Yad Vashem, will award three graduate credits for the summer institute contingent upon completion of required work. To elect this option, students must register and pay a $350 fee to Seton Hill University by June 30. Students will submit a reflection paper post-seminar to the Coordinator of the Genocide and Holocaust Studies program. (Grades will be submitted no later than August 16.) These credits may be applied toward the 15 credit graduate certificate in Seton Hill’s online Genocide and Holocaust Studies program.

Program and Study Trips CostThe program fee is $1,300, which is due upon acceptance into the program by Yad Vashem in cooperation with the National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education. Included is the opportunity to take one Yad Vashem online course at any time after the seminar. This fee does not include payment for graduate course credits.

InsuranceCheck with your health insurance carrier to make sure youare covered while traveling in Israel or arrange for medicaland hospital coverage during the time of the institute.

Hotel AccommodationAccommodation in The Prima Kings Hotel, an air-conditioned four-star modern hotel (full service, centrally located in Jerusalem, convenient to transportation) is available at approximately $70 per day per person in a double room or $113 per day per person in a single room. Breakfast is included.

TaxesCosts for the Catholic Institute for Holocaust Studies, a nonprofit educational seminar, may be tax-deductible.

ScholarshipsSeton Hill University’s National Catholic Center for HolocaustEducation offers limited scholarship assistance for educatorsfrom Catholic institutions who can demonstrate need.Applicants seeking financial assistance are urged to apply early.
