ABOUT SOGEC NDT

SOGEC is specialized in Oil & Gas Engineering and maintenance. It has acquired through almost twenty years of work an extensive profes-sional experience in bulk plant upgrading and Refinery maintenance projects.

SOGEC was initially launched in 1987 as a division of COSMA to meet the acute need for the repair and maintenance required by the oil and gas industry. In 2001 and based on the vast experience gained by this division's engineers and technicians, SOGEC successfully gained its in-dependent company status. This was later crowned with the addition of the Catholic Protection, the AC interference and mitigation, the NDT; preheating and post weld heat treatment (stress relieving), testing and inspection, leak sealing, and refinery maintenance.

SOGEC NDT SERVICES

Our prime activities are • Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) • Pre-Heat Treatment • Normalizing • Solution Heat Treatment • Refractory Dry Out • Paint Curing by High Velocity Burners • Positive Material Identification (PMI) • Radiation Testing • Ultra Sound Testing • Magnetic Particle Testing • Liquid Penetrating Testing • Leak Deduction • Hardness TestingBrief introduction on each activity

POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT DIVISIONThis Division handles the specialized fields of Post WeldHeat Treatment (PWHT) and Pre Heating serving therequirements of the petrochemical industry. To develop SOGEC’s exist-ing operation in the fields of Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) we are engaged in several training programs for our technicians to gain the satisfaction of our clients.

PWHT / PWHT is an abbreviation for Post weld Heat Treatment. It is carried out by electrical resistant method or by (furnace firing or internal firing) with high velocity fuel burners. There are three main benefits, stress relaxation, tempering and hydrogen removal. The first two benefits are the generally the reason for the heating operation, with hydrogen removal being considered as a bonus.

PRE-HEATING / Thermal stresses are set up as a molten weld cools. Cracking can occur during and after welding. Pre Heating reduces the temperature differentials between the weld metal and the parent met-al, thus minimizing the tendency to crack.

NORMALIZING / Normalizing / Annealing heat treatment is to im-prove the mechanical properties of steel, tensile strength and impact value are improved leading to better resistance to brittle fracture. For instance, with mild steel, the temperature would be approximately 900ºC (1650F) that is 50ºC above the upper critical point.

SOLUTION HEAT TREATMENT / Certain types of austenitic stainless steel undergo structural changes in the range of 500º to 800ºC which are detrimental to their corrosion resistance properties. Weld decay occurs. One method of obtaining immunity from decay is by raising the material to 1000 - 1150ºC followed by rapid cooling.

REFRACTORY DRY OUT / All types of furnaces have a kind of refracto-ry insulating installed in it and this need to be dried out the method in heating the surface gradually until it reaches the recommended man-ufacturer procedure. It is a long process, it my take 24 to 38 hours.

PAINT CURING / Some Tanks and Vessels are painted with corrosion protection coating the procedure requires Paint to be dried out slowly, the method is heating the surface gradually until it reaches the recom-mended manufacturer procedure. It is a long process, it my take 22 to 24 hours and it depends on the amount of layers needed.

PMI / PMI an abbreviation for Positive Material Identification. It is an on site metal analyzer that analyze the metal content so that the client can compare it with his requirements (Mill certificates from the sup-plier), as identification and acceptance / reject sorting for incoming and out going quality control in petrochemical and chemical facilities as will as refiners. This is now an Aramco requirement to all of its sub-contractors for fabrication.

NDT DIVISION / This Division handles the specialized fields of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) servicing the requirements of the petro-chemical industry. We have entered into the NDT with highly qualified

Technicians and to develop SOGEC’s new operation in the fields of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

SOGEC is proud to have competent, trained qualified personnel using modern equipment for undertaking various methods of testing:a. Radiography / RTUsing portable equipment with mobile darkrooms as required. X-ray and gamma ray techniques including constant potential x-ray and Co-60, Ir-192, radioactive-isotopes.b. Ultrasonic Examination / UTLamination checking, thickness measuring, corrosion/erosion moni-toring, weld examination in plates, pipes, nozzle and node configura-tions, flaw detection in forgings, castings and the like.Mechanized ultrasonic scanning systems for the examination of pipe-line welds. Advanced ultrasonic inspection techniques including time flight diffraction.c. Magnetic Particle Inspection ( Test)/ MPTFlaw detection, using current flow (AC/HWDC) magnetic flux induction and permanent magnet techniques, with wide variety of visual aids in-cluding fluorescent and daylight viewing inks and powders at ambient and elevated temperatures.d. Liquid Penetrant Examination (Test)/ LPTDefect location by daylight or fluorescent dye process, by aerosol, spray or bulk application of water or solvent based liquids.e. Leak DetectionBy vacuum box testing, bubble and/or gas leakage systems. Ultrasonic system also valid.f. Hardness TestingEmploying portable manual, hydraulic or electronic instruments.g. Coatings InspectionMeters, gauges, combs and the like for measuring paint, epoxy and ‘plastic’ coatings, holiday detectors for coal-tar or bitumen wrapping.
