•Great man-ok president• Some say honorable & thoughtful

• Abigail (wife) & John Quincy (son)=Same way

• “Was always an honest man, often a wise one, but sometimes & in some things, absolutely out of his senses.”• Carried away w/ideas & forgot reality• Had weak pts. & strong pts. (love him & had a temper)

• Adams was brave, intelligent, & loved country

• A diplomat in England, France, & Holland

• Liked Republicanism (representative gov’t)

• Wasn’t a fan of Democracy• Aristocratic & educated should manage• Jefferson was a fan of ordinary people ruling selves

• “Men are never good but necessity”-John Adams• Ppl. are good only if they have to be

•Adams always did what he thought was right, not necessarily what was popular

•Old Adams=different then the young Adams•Had become very independent & somewhat lazy

•61 when president & spent more time in Quincy, MA instead of the capital city

• Best thing he did as pres.- keep the US out of war• France vs. Eng.-France thought US should help because they helped in the R. War

• US wanted to be neutral-French captured US ships & took sailors prisoner

• Fight b/t Adams, Hamilton, & the party• Enter w/England & or don’t get involved

• Tried to stop the fighting b/t the Dem.-Rep.& the Federalists• Adams & Hamilton=F. & believed in strong central gov’t

• Children who acted like the F. & D-R. were told to stop acting silly

• Ea. side=scared for the nation-F. messed everything up & D.-R. elected would be doom
