What is Phi Kappa Phi?

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 atthe University of Maine.

The Society is the nations oldest,largest, and most selective all-disciplinehonor society.

Phi Kappa Phi is comprised of morethan 300 chapters in the United States,

Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.

Since its founding, Phi Kappa Phi hasinitiated more than one millionmembers.

Phi Kappa Phi membersfrom the 1900 University of

Maine Prismyearbook.

UMaines Coburn Hall, the

location of President

Abram Harris office, is

considered the birthplace

of Phi Kappa Phi.

Who makes up Phi Kappa Phi?

Election to membership is by invitation only.

Those elected to membership include the top7.5

percent of last-term juniors and the top 10 percent ofseniors, along with outstanding graduate students,faculty, professional staff, and alumni.

Each year, approximately 30,000 students, faculty,professional staff, and alumni are initiated.

More than $700,000 is awarded each year through the

Society's various awards competitions.

FELLOWSHIPS Phi Kappa Phi awards fifty-seven Fellowships at $5,000 each

and three Fellowships at $15,000 each to members enteringthe first year of graduate or professional study.

Each Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate fromamong its local applicants to compete for the Society-wideawards.

These grants are designed to help support undergraduatesas they seek knowledge and experience in their academicfields by studying abroad.

Forty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year.

LITERACY GRANTS Initiated in 2003 to mobilize members and

resources of Phi Kappa Phi and the highereducation community to champion literacyinitiatives.

Grants ofup to $2,500 are available to PhiKappa Phi chapters and individual members tofund ongoing literacy projects or to create newinitiatives.

The Societys commitment to the cause ofliteracy grows out of and is consistent with itsmission, which was expanded to include andto engage the community of scholars in serviceto others.
