ABOUT EBALDC’S VITA/EKS PROGRAM For the past eight years, EBALDC has successfully run the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program as a member of the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! (EKS) campaign, coordinated by United Way of the Bay Area. One of the main goals of the VITA program is to assist low-income families and individuals file their taxes to claim vital family tax credits, especially the Earned Income Credit or Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for which they might qualify. Earn It! Keep It! Save It! is a community project of United Way of the Bay Area. The coalition provides low to moderate income households with free, quality tax return preparation and access to asset building or income support resources such as public benefits, low or no cost bank accounts or financial education. We also ensure eligible taxpayers claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) which can amount to as much as $5,600 per family. The EITC is a sliding scale credit available to working taxpayers. Other tax credits families may be eligible for are the Child Tax Credit, Education Credits and Retirement Savings Contribution credits. EBALDC’s VITA/EKS program started modestly, serving 49 people in its first year in 2003. Since then the program has expanded significantly and opened a second site at the SparkPoint Oakland Center, located at one of EBALDC’s Lion Creek Crossings development. With the assistance of a large number of volunteers from the community, and collaboration with SparkPoint Oakland Center partner organizations, EBALDC’s VITA program to date has served over 3,200 low-income families and individuals and returned close to $3.7 million in federal and state refunds to the community.
