Orrin Morris is a local artist and art teacher. He has lived in the East Metro area for more than 35 years and drawn over 50 limited edition sketches of historic scenes in Rockdale County and 35 in Newton County.

Since 1997, the retired Baptist minister has written Saturday devotional articles depicting wildflowers for the Rockdale Citizen and Newton newspapers. In 2002, Orrin began drawing col-ored pencil images of more that 300 different local wildflowers. All 300 are on display at Nature Seen Gallery and Frame Shop in Olde Town Conyers.

Mr. Morris was a founding member of the local arts council and began teaching summer classes through that organization in 1999. He continues to teach in the ArtSmart sum-mer program.

Since 2001, he has maintained a private studio in the Evan’s Building at 903 Commer-cial Street. There, children’s one hourclasses are held Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednes-days in the afternoon and a two hour adult class on Thursday evenings. He currently has over 40 students in ten classes.

The Conyers Depot is definitely one of the favorite tourist attractions in Olde Town. The Depot was a working station until 1972, when passenger rail service between Atlanta and Augusta was stopped. It now serves as a social gathering place and is maintained by the Rockdale County Historical Society. This Conyers landmark is surely the heart of Conyers.

The DinkyAlongside the Depot is “The Dinky,” a 1905 Rogers Steam Locomotive

that ran service between Conyers and the neighboring mill town of Milstead until 1961. The engine was used to haul cotton from the main

line to the textile mills. It is one of only three of its kind in the world.

A Conyers Classic Gets Even Better!

If you haven’t had the gastronomical plea-sure of dining at Baan Thai, you need to try it. Cited by the AJC as “a rare treasure: an affordable clean restaurant with fabulous, creative food”, Baan Thai is a local gem with a wonderful, eclectic menu running the gamut from a wide variety of seafood, the usual suspects of beef, chicken and pork.

Starting with their standard, yet delightful, Coconut Chicken soup with mushrooms and galanga root in a lemony coconut broth as well as an incredible seafood version featuring shrimp, scallops, mussels and squid,

to the spicier Tom Yum Shrimp soup, the menu is jammed pack with winners. The Pan-fried Crab Cake appetizer served with ginger-roasted pepper sauce should not be overlooked.

Baan Thai is a mecca for seafood lovers. Among the Favorites is the Panang Salmon, sautéed salmon enhanced with a slightly sweet peanutty chili curry sauce served over fresh veggies. The Thai Spicy Shellfish, fea-turing shrimp, scallops, mussels and squid sautéed with onion, bell pep-pers, Thai eggplant and basil in the chef’s secret spicy sauce is another can’t miss. One of their special entrees is the Pan-fried Filet of Seabass topped with spicy shrimp, mushroom and basil sauce.

If you have children graduating from college, you’re probably excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for them. But once your last child leaves home, and you become an “empty nester,” you also may find some good oppor-tunities for yourself — opportunities to improve your financial situation.In fact, your empty nester status may help you make progress toward what are likely some key financial goals at this stage of your life: Getting rid of debt and acceler-ating your savings for retirement.What steps should you consider? For starters, you could downsize your home by moving into a smaller, less expensive one. If you make a profit on the sale of your home, you could use it to invest for retirement and clear up debts. Of course, you may be emotionally attached to your home and neighborhood, but downsizing may be a good financial option to consider at some point.Here are a few other suggestions for taking advantage of your empty nest:* “Max out” on your retirement plans. If you now have money no longer needed for your children’s college education, use these funds to help save for retirement. Try to fully fund your traditional or Roth IRA, and put as much as you can possibly afford into your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you still have money available after “maxing out” on these accounts, look for other retirement savings vehicles.* Increase your investments for other goals. Up until now, part of your investment strategy — perhaps a large

part — was aimed at building enough resources to help your children pay for college. Since that need has now been met, you may be free to boost your investment toward other goals, such as travel, a vacation home, charitable giving, funding for a small business you hope to operate after you retire — the list could go on and on. And since you are probably entering your peak earn-ing years, you may be able to add substantially to the investments designed to help you achieve these various objectives.* Reduce your credit card debt. If you have more dispos-able income available now, try to pay off your high-rate credit cards. By freeing up this money, you can save and invest more.* Evaluate your insurance needs. When you purchased your life insurance, you may have factored in enough coverage to pay off your mortgage, send your kids to college and provide some retirement funds for your spouse. But if your kids are through school, your mort-gage is nearly paid off and your spouse has accumu-lated some money in an employer-sponsored retirement plan, you may not need the same amount of life and disability coverage. Any money you can save on insur-ance can be used to help fund your IRA, 401(k) or other investments.As an empty nester, you will miss your children, but you’ll also find that you have greater freedom to pursue your hobbies or other interests. And by taking the steps described above, you can help yourself move closer to reaching your financial objectives as well.

Rockdale County Hosts VariousSUMMER EVENTS!

The Rockdale County Department of Recreation and Maintenance and Cooperative Extension will be hosting a number of new programs throughout the summer for citizens of various ages and interests. Events will be held at the Johnson Park Recreation Center located at 1781 Ebenezer Road and at the Rockdale Government Annex Building located at 1400 Parker Road.

• An Archery Camp for boys and girls ages 10 and up will be held on the grounds of the Rockdale Government Annex. The camp will teach students how to perform target ar-chery and the fundamentals of shooting. The Georgia Archery Association will provide each camper with all the needed equipment. The camp will be held July 27 through 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost of the camp is $80 per camper and lunch is not included.

• The first annual Youth Leadership Development & Sports Camp for Boys will be of-fered at Johnson Park June 29 through July 2, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The camp is open to 7th to 10th grade boys only. Camp fee is $125 per person. Campers will be taught offense and defensive fundamentals of the game of basketball and play two games each day. Additionally, campers will have class discussions on topics such as: How to be the impact player coaches notice; developing vital leadership skills; anger management; and other skills. All campers will receive a t-shirt, leadership books and prizes. Each camper must bring his own lunch, sports drinks and towel. For further information, contact Coach Witherspoon at 404-505-8554.

• Cooperative Extension will host a Cloverbud Insect Day on Tuesday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Children ages 2 to 8 will learn about the fascinating world of insects, make crafts, play buggy games and see and touch live insects. A $5 fee for children is required, and adults are free.

Discount Six Flags and White Water tickets are available for sale, cash only, at theCooperative Extension Office. All proceeds benefit the Rockdale 4H. Six Flags tickets are $29 and passes are $52. White Water tickets are $28 and passes are $52.

Registration for the Archery Camp and the Youth Leadership Development Camp is being accepted at the Johnson Park Recreation Center. For more information contact the center at 770-278-7529.
