ABOUT:

Build2Grow Research is a two-day program for PhD candidates exploring how to make an impact with research. Pilot production in December 2013 with 20 PhD candidates from UiO

Aim: provide PhDs with a toolset to apply academic skills and knowledge and contribute to innovation and value creation. • Open for all UiO PhD candidates and Post Docs across institutes

• It is based on leading international expertise in innovation and business development. 

• Build2Grow Research is hosted by Oslotech AS, with experience from hosting several other entrepreneurship programs in collaboration with UiO

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

• Analyze the potential of research and ideas to meet user needs and create value for users

• Increase understanding of the innovation process through exploration of tools for business development like Business Model Canvas, creating value propositions and customer development.

• Practicing to pitch business ideas effectively and communicate research outside academia.

• Mapping and discovering how to use own resources and network.

• Discover own uniqueness and motivation for entrepreneurship (effectuation)

BUILD2GROW RESEARCH had a high participant satifaction:

BUILD2GROW RESEARCH EVALUATION:

• There is a good match between need for an entrepreneurial program and the content and style of Build2Grow Research.

• The candidates from UiO express the need and desire to explore how to apply their research to create value and to have impact with their work.

• Learning how to pitch ideas and communicate research was particularly important.

• It is a strength that the program suit people considering an entrepreneurial path as well as candidates generally curious about opportunities outside of academia.

• The feedback suggested that participants found the program to be relevant on a personal level and in terms of sharpening the focus of the PhD itself.

• It is important for the participant to work with own case and own research.

BUILD2GROW RESEARCH – FURTHER DEVELOPMENT:

The December pilot was the first edition of the Build2Grow Research program. It generated a lot of insight and learning that can now be converted into the next version.

Some things we would like to improve based on participant input: • Offer more relevant case-examples

• Enhance emphasis on guidance and coaching during the program

• Build new Build2Grow Research courses around specific themes

• Invite participants to actively use their own projects in their coursework

BUILD2GROW RESEARCH – SUGGESTIONS FOR THE SPRING 2014:

• Present the evaluation to the Research Deans at UiO to see whether this can be used by the relevant faculties

• Extend the pilot by arranging two courses: one for life sciences (if MLS find it relevant) and one general course for PhD-candidates

• Build2Grow establishes a program board with the following members: Build2Grow employees, one from Inven2, one from SFE (if the have capacity) and one from department of academic administration Depademic Administration

• Build2Grow Research will be operated by Oslotech in close cooperation with the admin. at UiO.

• Taylor program for different PhD-programmes at UiO

• Develop closer collaboration with Inven2 and SFE

• UiO will be involved in communicating with the desired target groups, and will help out with tasks such as invitation with possible participants.
