The house of Bibi Fatima (AS) and ImamAli (AS) was blessed with two sons, Hasan(AS) and Husain (AS), who the ProphetMuhammad SAW loved dearly. Togetherthese five are the Panjatan Pak, keptpure by Allah himself. Angels often cameto bring Allah’s blessings and mercy. Intothis house in Madina, on the 1st Shabaan7A.H. a daughter was born.

Why were they sad when Bibi Zainabwas born? When her father, Imam Ali (AS) saw herfor the first time, Imam Husain (AS) whowas three years of age at that time waswith him. The young child exclaimed indelight: “O father! Allah has given me a

When the Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW

saw the baby, he named her Zainab: madeup of Zain (ornament) and ab (father) Shewas indeed the pride of her father ImamAli (AS) . Tears welled up in his eyes. BibiFatima (AS) asked “Why do you cry?” TheProphet replied, “This child will facetrials and troubles from a very young age.She will first weep over me; then she willmoan her mother; then her father; andthen her brothers Hasan and Husain.Thereafter, she will face trials inKarbala, which will turn her hair grey andher back will be bent”. When the family

Two years later Bibi Fatima (AS) hadanother daughter, equally beautiful. Itwas the 18th of Rabiulaval 9 A.H. Again itwas the Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW whonamed her: Kulthoom. She was known asSaniye Zainab or Zainab e Sugra. Raisedup in the home of the Panjatan e Pak, thepurest of Allah’s creation, they grew uptogether. Childhood

Happy Times As days passed into monthsand the months into years, Bibi Zainaband Bibi Kulthoom, the daughters ofFatima (AS) and Ali (AS) grew up in thelap of the Holy Prophet. They saw Islamgrow before their very eyes. More andmore people became Muslims andaccepted the word of Allah.

Life for Bibi Zainab (AS) and BibiKulthoom (AS) was happy. When ProphetMuhammad SAW gathered his family aroundhim under the Kisa (blanket), Allah sentthe Ayat e Tatheer in praise of thePanjatan Pak. When the Prophet had totake people with him to face theChristians in Mubahalah, it was again thePanjatan who were chosen by Allah.

Hadhrat Jafar e Tayyar (AS), their uncle, returned from Abbysinia after twelveyears. The Holy Prophet welcomed himback happily. In the battle of Khaibar, itwas their father Imam Ali (AS) who wasgiven the flag of victory. The final glorywas the event of Ghadeer, when all theMuslims on the way back from Hajj learntthat Imam Ali (AS) is the Maula (Master)of all. The message of Islam wascompleted and religion made perfect withthis announcement. The Holy Prophetwould often visit the house of hisdaughter Fatima and loved to be with hisgrandchildren.

Sad Times One day the ProphetMuhammad SAW found his granddaughterBibi Zainab (AS) in tears. She had seen avery frightening dream. She saw a violentwind rise in the city and darken the earthand the sky. She was tossed in the air and

suddenly she foundherself stuck in thebranches of a hugetree, but the wind wasso strong that it haduprooted the tree. She caught hold of itsbranches but theybroke. She then grabbed two twigs butthese too gave way and finally she felldown.

What did the dream mean? The HolyProphet hugged her close, wept and said,“O my Zainab! That tree in your dream isme; I will shortly depart from this world. The branches are your parents Ali andFatima and the twigs are your brothersHasan and Husain. They will all die beforeyou and you will suffer their separationand loss”. The words of the ProphetMuhammad SAW came true. Bibi Zainab

(AS) was hardly five years and BibiKulthoom (AS) hardly three when theProphet

Muhammad SAW died. The message ofGhadeer was forgotten, Imam Ali’s rightswere taken away. Bibi Fatima (AS) wasnot even allowed to weep for her father.

Bibi Zainab (AS) and Bibi Kulthoom (AS)saw their mother Bibi Fatima (AS) beingattacked in her own house, when fire wasbrought to her door. They saw theirfather Ali (AS) dragged outside with arope round his neck. They did not leavethe side of their mother, who was soon toleave them forever. Madina changed. Thecity which had once welcomed the familyof the Prophet forgot his words.

When Bibi Zainab (AS) and Bibi Kulthoom(AS) wanted to visit the tomb of their

The lamps would be put out as thedaughters of Bibi Fatima did not like tobe seen. Why did the Imam stand up?One day, Imam Husain (AS) was readingthe Quran, when his sister Zainab (AS)walked into the room. He stood up toshow his respect to her in the samemanner as the Prophet Muhammad SAW

In Madina

After Imam Ali (AS), our second ImamHasan (AS) was not left to rule Koofa inpeace. He had to sign a treaty to protectthe interests of the Muslims. He leftKoofa and retired to Madina. The Holyfamily of the Prophet went back toMadina with him.

How was Imam Hasan(AS) killed?Even in Madina, Imam Hasan (AS) was notleft alone. His wicked wife Jo’dah wasused by Moaviya in 50 A.H. to give poisonto him. The Imam felt sick and started tovomit blood. His son Qasim ran to call hisaunts Bibi Zainab AS and Bibi Kulthoom(AS), who lived nearby.

Page 21: About Bibi Zainab

Let’s learn about Bibi Zainab (AS)

The daughters of Imam Ali were about tostart their namaz e shab (midnightprayer) when Qasim knocked at the door. They saw Qasim’s torn clothes andunderstood that there was a crisis. Theywent to Imam Hasan’s house straightaway. They saw their brother in a lot of

pain, throwingup blood.

Why werearrows thrown

at the coffin?Imam Hasan (AS) gathered his familyaround him, told them that his brotherHusain will be the next Imam. He wantedto be buried by his grandfather, ProphetMuhammad SAW. But Bibi Zainab (AS) andBibi Kulthoom (AS) saw that this was not

allowed. Instead arrows were shot at hiscoffin. They wept. Now they had onlyImam Husain (AS) left from the Panjatan.

Leaving MadinaMoaviya died in Rajab 60 A.H., but beforehis death (going against the terms of thetreaty with Imam Hasan AS) he chose hisson Yazeed to be the next Khalifa.

Why did Imam Husain (AS) leaveMadina?Yazeed was an evil man who had norespect for Islam and the Prophet. He didnot obey any of the rules yet now wantedall Muslims including Imam Husain (AS) toaccept him as the leader and guide.

Page 23: About Bibi Zainab

The Imam knew that bayat with Yazeedwould mean the end of Islam. He refused.Imam Husain (AS) decided to leaveMadina and go to Makka.

Why did Imam Husain (AS) take hisfamily with him?The Imam knew that his mission of savingIslam needed that his family, especiallyhis sisters went with him. After Karbala,it would be Zainab (AS) and Kulthoom(AS) with his son Sajjad (AS), who wouldsave Islam. When their cousin tried tostop them, Bibi Zainab (AS) said “IbnAbbas, do you suggest Husain leaves ushere and goes alone? No by Allah weeither live with him or die with him. Wehave nothing left except him.”

While in Makka, Imam Husain (AS)received 18,000 letters from Koofainviting him to Iraq. The Imam sent hiscousin Muslim ibn Aqeel there. As thetime for Hajj came near, Yazeed sentspies dressed in ehram to kill the Imam. The Imam did not want bloodshed in theHoly city. He also did not want his killersto remain hidden, so he left for Iraq. Thejourney was long and hard.

In KarbalaBibi Zainab (AS) and Bibi Kulthoom (AS)arrived in Karbala with Imam Husain (AS)on the 2nd of Muharram, 61 A.H. As they

Fromthe 7th day of Muharram, the army ofUmar ibn Saad did not allow the Imam’sfamily any water. The days were hot.Children got more and more thirsty andcried “al atash al atash.”

Every time there were sounds of armiesgalloping into Karbala and the clashing ofweapons, Bibi Zainab (AS) would ask ImamHusain (AS) , ”Has someone come to helpus?” only to be told “No ,my dear sister, these are more men sent to fight againstme.” They looked at each other, thentowards the heavens.

On the evening of the 9th Muharram theforces of Yazeed marched towards thetents of the Prophet’s family. “Bayat orfight” said Umar ibn Saad, thecommander of Yazeed’s forces. ImamHusain (AS) asked for a night’s delay sohe could spend it in prayer.

First the friends, companions, then thefamily of Imam Husain (AS), one by one, went to the battlefield and weremartyred. Bibi Zainab (AS) and BibiKulthoom (AS) comforted the weepingmothers and children.

It was the turn of the sons of Bibi Zainab(AS) to show their valour. Hadhrat Aunand Mohammed had learnt fencing fromtheir uncle, Hadhrat Abbas (AS). WhenAun ibn Abdullah came in the battlefield,he said 'I am the grandson of Jafar-e-Tayyar, who was granted special wings byAllah to fly in heaven.' Then he attackedthe army of Yazeed. Despite his youngage and unbearable thirst, he foughtbravely.

Hadhrat Muhammad ibn Abdullah was hisyounger brother. Though he too was veryyoung and thirsty, he showed wonderfulcourage. Finally, when surrounded byenemies, Aun and Muhammad called, “Ourlast salams on you o Imam”. On hearingtheir call, both Imam Husain AS andHadhrat Abbas AS rushed to thebattlefield. By the time they werebrought back to the tent, the youths hadboth died.

Bibi Zainab AS on seeing her martyredsons, bent her head down in sajda eshukr. Echoing Bibi Zainab’s feelingsHadhrat Abdullah thanked Allah, when heheard of his sons’ martyrdom in Madina. He said “Praise be to Allah who allowed

What were the Imam’s last words offarewell?

By the time for Asr prayers, there was noone left except Ali Sajjad (AS) amongthe men. All the others had been killed. Then they heard Imam Husain (AS) callout the final words of farewell:

The ladies started to weep to see theImam go. Imam Husain (AS) turned to hissisters Zainab (AS) and Kulthoom (AS)and said “Be patient, o daughters ofMurtuza, for the time of crying will be

Bibi Zainab (AS) watched her brother’sbrave fight from the door of the tent. She saw how they surrounded himattacking him from every direction. As hefell from his horse she could see him nomore. She came out of the tent crying, “Omy brother where are you? O Muhammad,O father Ali, O Jafar. Bibi Zainab (AS)looking at thehorse, cried out“Your face iscovered in mybrother’s blood.”Let us join our living Imam Mahdi (AS) tosay salams to the ladies “who looked atthe broken saddle and wept for ImamHusain (AS).”

Bibi Zainab (AS) ran towards the body ofher beloved brother Husain (AS). She

stood, lifted her hands and said,Allahumma taqabbal minna hazal qurban“O Allah, accept from us this sacrifice.”

Shaam e Ghareebaan

The day of Ashoora ended, the skies weptblood and went red. The army of Yazeedset fire to the tents. The ladies of theAhlebait ran from one tent to the next.Children ran seeking their mothers;mothers ran looking for their children.Veils were snatched away; earrings werepulled out of ears. Bibi Zainab (AS) andBibi Kulthoom (AS) showed extremepatience and courage.

What did Bib Zainab ask her nephew? When the tents were burnt down, BibiZainab (AS) asked her nephew Imam

Zainulabideen (AS) what his orders werefor them. “Should we go out of the tent?”They had no covering on their heads.Taking the advice of the fourth Imam, they guided the ladies and children tosafety. They also showed us that we mustalways obey the Imam.

Why did she enter the burning tent?

A soldier from Yazeed’s army narrates,‘When the tents were burning, I saw a talllady near the camp, who would go in and

look towards the sky and beat her handupon her head. I warned her, “The tent isburning, move away from it.” At this thelady replied, “O Sheikh! One of our dearones is inside, who is so ill he cannotmove. How can I leave him in the risingflames?” Bibi Zainab (AS) then rescuedher nephew, Imam Sajjad (AS) from theblazing tent.

Where was Bibi Sakina?

Bibi Zainab (AS) could not find the fouryear old Sakina (AS) anywhere. Shecalled,” Where are you my dear Sakina?”At last, she found her crying near herfather;”O my father, my father, whydidn’t you come back? Our tents havebeen burnt. My earrings were snatched!”

As the night passed, Bibi Zainab (AS) andBibi Kulthoom (AS) were protecting andsafeguarding the orphans and widows, aduty that used to be done by ImamHusain (AS) and Hadhrat Abbas (AS).After their tahajud namaz, both stayedawake to guard the Ahlebait. Theygathered all the children and ladiestogether, and sat at each end of the tent.

On the 11th of Muharram, the day afterAshoor, the ladies were made captivesand made to mount saddle-less camels.Imam Sajjad’s (AS) hands and feet wereput in iron chains. They were then takenpast the very place, where the bodies oftheir martyrs lay. They could see their

headless bodies on the sand of Karbala.Bibi Zainab (AS) asked “a antal aqui?”Are you my brother? Then she turnedtowards Madina and cried, “O Muhammad, this is your Husain.” She called out to hermother saying “O Fatima Zahra, this isyour beloved son on the sand of Karbala.”

Imam Sajjad (AS) turned a pale yellowand would have diedof grief. When hesaw the bodies ofthe martyrs, he couldnot control hisfeelings and weptloudly. Bibi Zainab(AS) consoled himand reminded him that her grandfatherMuhammad SAW had said: “Allah haspromised that the mark of Husain’s tombwill never be blotted out.” Thousands ofangels will circle round it. These words

reminded Imam Sajjad that the tomb ofImam Husain (AS) will become a source ofstrength against any tyrant.

Taken to Koofa

The heads of the martyrs were severedand carried on spears. The 4th Imam wasin chains and the ladies of the Ahlebait, without their veils, were taken ascaptives on the backs of unsaddledcamels from Karbala to Koofa. Their armswere tied with ropes behind their necks.

Why was going to Koofa so hard?Koofa was the city where Imam Ali (AS)had once ruled. When the Ahlebait sawthe walls of the city, they were remindedof the time when they had once livedthere as the family of the ruler. But

Page 42: About Bibi Zainab

today, they did not even have veils overtheir heads, and they were seated on thebare back of camels. The children, hungryand thirsty, were crying. The heads ofthe loved ones were on the point ofspears. Imam Sajjad (AS), ill and frail, was in chains. The people of Koofa, instead of feeling remorse on the killingof the son of Holy Prophet (SAW), werecelebrating with joy. Those who used togreet them with respect were nowtaunting at them.

Why did Bibi Kulsoom (AS) throw backthe dates? As they arrived in the bazaar of Koofa, the people started throwing bread anddates at the hungry children. BibiKulthoom (AS) gave the food back saying

Your menkill us and your women cry for us! Allah isthe judge”. As they neared the palace ofIbn Ziyad, the Yazeedi army started tobeat the drums. The noise was loud.

Why was everyone amazed?Bibi Zainab (AS) decided to speak. Ather command, there was a sudden hush.Everything in sight froze. Not only menand women, even animals were quiet. Theirbreathing slowed down and even bellswhich were dangling in the necks ofanimals stopped ringing. She started tospeak in the manner of her father. After
