  • Technical Parameters

Sd-Value: for pitched roofs with single ventilation gap only highly breathable underlayment membranes (Sd-value less than 0.3m) must be used.

Water-tightness: The underlayment membranes with best water tightness properties belong to the category W1 according to the standard. The membranes with least water tightness receive W2 classification. The accepted general convention is that underlayment with W2 water tightness may be used only for pitched roofs with higher than 25 degree slopes, while W1 may be used for roof pitches less than 25 degrees. Mastermax meets both application requirements.

Pitched roofs with single ventilation gap – MASTERMAX membranes

LOFT AREAIt very important to ventilate the gap between the mem-brane and the roof tile. The ventilation gap shall be prepared with at least 5cm thick counter battens and proper ventilation can be achieved by the creation of at least 200 cm2/meter free ventilating gaps along the eaves, and 50 cm2/meter at the ridge part. For pitched roofs with less than 20 degrees or built with rafters over 10 meter, even higher ventilation values are required. The role of this gap is to create an effective drainage path for the wetness appearing under-roof as a result of vapour condensation to the eaves and to be venti-lated at the same time towards the ridge. In the summer time: when the roof tile is getting hot, the ventilated roof is less exposed to the heat-load, thus the climate of the loft is more comfortable. In the winter time: the ventilation prevents the snow from melting from the roof side. If the ventilation is in-adequate, water layer may appear on the surface of

Small explanation to the technical parameters:Sd-value: for pitched roofs with single ventilation gap only high breathable membranes (Sd-value less than 0.3 m) must be usedWater-tightness: The foils with best water tightness properties belong to the category W1 according to the standard, the foils with less water tightness receive W2 classification. General rule is that foils with W2 water tightness may be used only for pitched roofs with high-er than 25 degrees, while W1 category may be used even under that.

Installation rules:The MASTERMAX 3 membranes should be used for appropriately ventilated roofs, covered with roof tiles. Above 25 degrees of pitch, all types of MASTERMAX membranes may be used freely layed on the rafters. Between 20-25 degrees pitch you can install TOP and EXTRA types exactly the same way. For lower pitch sizes, i.e. 15-20 degrees, we suggest to use also TOP and EXTRA types, layed on a fix surface, usual-ly OSB-3 boards sealed with MASTERMAX TAPES.The way of rolling out for all types of membranes is paralel with the eaves, with the printed side upward. During installation, start the laying of the membrane from the eaves water drop plate along the roof, each rolls overlapped by 10cm or 15cm (below 30 degrees of pitch) above the previous one. The membrane must not lean out anywhere from below the roof tile, as the permanent UV-radiation may damage the membrane.

FURTHER MASTERMAX PRODUCTS:According to the international regulations we recom-mend the following membrane types for ventilated

metal roof tiles:MASTERMAX PRO, MASTERMAX THERMO SA,

    MASTERMAX ALU, MASTERMAX METAL

The MASTERMAX membranes, due to the high va-pour-permeability properties, may be overlapped at the valleys and ridges, so these critical points may be eas-ily solved by their usage. The membranes, temporari-ly fixed by staples, should be finally fixed along the raft-ers by the 50/50 mm size counter battens with screws or nails, the rolls may be joined only above the rafters.

    01 – roof tile, 02 – tile batten, 03 – counter-batten (50/50 mm), 04 – ther-mal insulation between the rafters, 05 – wooden or metal support, 06 – additional insulation material, 07 – vapour barrier, 08 – gypsum board, 09 – rafter, 10 – ridge tile, 11 – ventilating tile, 12 – ridge batten (50/50mm), 13 – ventilating band, 14 – ridge batten holder

Pitched roofs with double ventilation gap – with traditional vapour barriers

The traditional vapour barriers are non-breathable. Therefore, in case the lofts are used, the roofs must be installed by double ventilation gap. Through the ventilation of the lower gap, the insulation materials are continously cooled in the winter time, thus result-ing in a decrease of thermal insulation efficiency by 20-25%.In the winter time, the rate of humidity inside the build-ing is always higher than outside. As the vapour pres-sure always tries to balance somehow, the vapour starts to migrate from the indoor area to the outdoor area. A roof structure – even if vapour barriers have been installed – leaves a part of the humidity to pass through. The accumulating humidity keeps on damag-ing the roof structures. In case proper roof foils are used, the humidity may freely pass through the foil and get driven away by the ventilation.

  • Product Installation Technique

To provide the foundation for an extended life cedar roof it is very important to ventilate the gap between the membrane and the cedar roof. The ventilation gap should be prepared with at least 5cm thick counter battens. Proper ventilation can be achieved by the creation of at least 200 cm2/meter free ventilating gaps along the eaves, and 50 cm2/meter gaps at the roof ridge. For pitched roofs with less than 20 degrees slope, or built with rafters over 10 meters, higher ventilation values are required.

The role of this ventilation gap is to create an effective exit path for moisture developed under-roof as a result of transpiration and vapour condensation. Moisture can be vented both to the eaves and to the roof ridge.

In the summer time: when the exterior of the cedar roof is exposed to direct sunlight the ventilation cavity is not, thus reducing the impact, and heat gain, for the loft area.

In the winter time: the ventilation gap prevents snow from melting on the roof side as there is no direct contact with the membrane that is in contact with the heated interior.

Traditional roof vapour barriers are non-breathable and to compensate for moisture transfer a double ventilation gap is required, adding cost and time to construction. This technique is further burdened by the requirement to ventilate the lower gap, which in winter, results in a continuously cooled airspace that deceases thermal insulation efficiency by 20% - 25%.

Traditional Ontario winter weather sees the rate of humidity inside residential buildings higher than outside air. As vapour pressure exerts itself on the roof membrane the humid air must be permitted to pass through the membrane or be removed from the roof cavity to prevent moisture build-up.

  • Installation Instructions

The Mastermax 3 Extra membrane can be used for appropriately ventilated roofs, that will be covered with cedar shingles. The product comes in rolls 1.5m wide at lengths of 50 meters, thereby providing an ideal means of manually transporting the material to the work location.

    • Membranes are to be rolled out for installation parallel with the eaves, with the printed side upward.

    • Mastermax 3 Extra can be attached to the roof with roofing nails at appropriately distributed intervals.

    • Pneumatic staple guns are not recommended.

    • The articulated surface treatments on the top and bottom layer of the 3-ply Mastermax 3 Extra provides a limited slip design, but care must be taken to always use standard safety construction practises and follow safety rules for overhead and roof work.

    • During installation start the layering of the membrane from the eaves water drop plate along the roof. Each subsequent layer is overlapped by 10cm or 15cm above the previous one on all sides.

    • For optimal performance the membrane must not be exposed to direct sunlight as UV radiation may damage the upper layer.

Upon completion of proper installation Mastermax 3 Extra will provide superior membrane protection.
