Aboriginal Creation Story The creation story that we are going to talk about is the Aboriginal Creation Story of the Ngi-yaam-paa country, which is a big tribe in Australia. It starts like this: a very long time ago in the beginning, there were no people, no trees or plants. The Earth looked like a featureless, deserted plain and supernatural beings roamed the Earth. Guthi-guthi the spirit of the Aboriginal ancestors, who lived up in the sky, wanted to create a special land for humans and animals to live in. Guthi-guthi looked at the land and saw that it was bare. He tried creating things like wildlife, plants and landmarks but nothing grew because there was no water. Guthi-guthi knew that Weo-wie the water serpent was trapped inside this mountain and so he came down from the sky and split the mountain open, releasing the water serpent. Weo-wie the water serpent came out and wherever the water serpent went he made waterholes and streams. After Weo-wie was done he went back to the mountain to rest, today that mountain is called Mt Minara. Guthi-guthi was pleased but he wanted more water so he called out to Pundu, the Cod to produce and create the river known as the Darling River today. Now that the land had water Guthi-guthi created the animals, birds and humans. The first 2 tribes in the country were Eaglehawk and Crow. From these 2 tribes came many other tribes.

Aboriginal Creation Story

The creation story that we are going to talk about is the Aboriginal Creation Story of the Ngi-yaam-paa country, which is a big tribe in Australia.

Differences of the 2 creation stories

Page 2: Aboriginal Creation Story Jhui

The name of the creator of the Aboriginal people is called Guthi-guthi not God like in the bible.

The story is set in the Ngiyaampaa country in Australia, instead of the whole world like in the bible.

There were no evil characters like there was in the bible which was Satan in the form of a snake.

The biggest difference to the 2 creation stories is that in the Aboriginal one there were previous creations roaming around the Earth like Weo-wie, the water serpent and Pundu, the Cod. They existed already before Guthi-guthi decided to create a land for people and animals.

Commonalities

Page 3: Aboriginal Creation Story Jhui

1. There was a higher power existing like in the bible there was God and in the Aboriginal creation story there was Guthi-guthi. I believe that Guthi-guthi would be called a higher power because only he could make creations; none of the other beings could do that.

2. An interesting common thing is that Guthi-guthi and God both lived up in the sky.

3. Once Guthi-guthi creates everything he goes back up to the sky and rests just like God.
