Learn about the ecology of four lush National parks, including Corcovado National park, Costa Rica; coiba island, one of Panama’s best protected marine national parks; and Machalilla National park, which protects one of Ecuador’s few remaining coastal habitats.

Explore pre-Columbian archaeological sites in Peru such as chan chan, capital of the Chimu culture; the Moche pyramids Huaca de la Luna and Huaca del Sol; pachacámac, the largest Peruvian coastal city and ceremonial center before the arrival of the Spaniards; and the reconstructed pre-Inca villa of puruchuco.

explorers club lecturer and host NaNcy Wilkie (fN ’00) is a distinguished archaeologist and professor who has lectured on numerous Explorers Club Travelers programs throughout the world. Nancy is the William H. Laird Professor of Classics, Anthropology, and the Liberal Arts, and Co-Director of the Archaeology Concentration at Carleton College in Northfield, MN, where she has been on the faculty since 1974. She is a member of The Explorers Club, an Honorary President of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), and on the Managing Committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. In 2009-10 Nancy is serving as the AIA’s Charles Eliot Norton lecturer, one of the highest honors that the Institute bestows. In April 2003 the President appointed her to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee of the U.S. State Department. The Committee reviews requests from foreign governments for the protection of their cultural property and recommends a course of action to the President.

Dr. WilliaM ratliff is a fellow and curator of the Americas and International Collections at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. His current research focuses on comparative political, economic, and educational reform in Latin America and Asia, and on U.S. foreign policy. He has written and edited academic studies and commentaries for most major U.S. and many foreign newspapers and has interviewed dozens of foreign presidents and prime ministers. He has conducted research in and traveled and worked extensively throughout Latin America, including Chile, Cuba, and El Salvador. Dr. Ratliff looks forward to sharing his knowledge on the politics, history, and international relations of Central and South America on this program.

patricia hostiuck, a popular and respected naturalist, began her career in Alaska as a ranger and since then has criss-crossed the state for the past 19 years, working as a naturalist and lecturer on expedition ships. Patty’s high-latitude work has also taken her from the Canadian High Arctic, Greenland, and Iceland to Svalbard, Norway, and Russia. Over 20 trips to Antarctica, Tierra del Fuego, and Patagonia make for a nearly pole-to-pole career! Well-versed in tropical as well as polar ecosystems, Patty also leads trips throughout the year to the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers, Peru, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, Belize, Honduras, the Caribbean, Baja California, northern Australia, and Borneo. She has led over 50 trips with Smithsonian Journeys. She has shared her expertise in mammals, birds, insects, and plants aboard ships and on the trail with thousands of fellow explorers in dozens of remote areas.

In an era of mega cruise ships that carry thousands of passengers, the Clelia II is a delightful alternative. More like a private yacht than a cruise ship, Clelia II accommodates only 100 guests in 50 suites. Thurs., November 4 golfito, costa rica Sail through Golfo Dulce to the town of Golfito. Drive to the Orchid Garden to see its native and exotic plant collection. Next visit Finca Köbö, a sustainable farm, and partake in a chocolate tour. Fri., November 5 MaNuel aNtoNio NatioNal park Scenic Manuel Antonio National Park is a perfect combination of warm Pacific waters and rain forest that grows down to white-sand beaches. Nature trails follow the beach and over a forested, rocky promontory. The park protects many

habitats, including primary and secondary forest, mangroves, beach vegetation, and marine resources. Due to its relatively small size and isolation by surrounding ocean and plantations, it is one of the easiest places in Costa Rica to see wildlife, particularly sloths, coatimundi, agoutis, White-faced Monkeys, and the tiny Squirrel Monkey. primates dancing along the jungle canopy. The park is widely considered the crown jewel in the extensive system of national parks and biological reserves spread across Costa Rica. National Geographic called it “the most biologically intense place on Earth.” Abundant wildlife includes scarlet macaws (the country’s largest population), spider monkeys, anteaters, pumas, and white-faced capuchin monkeys. Tues., November 9 MaNta, ecuador | MoNtecristi or Machalilla NatioNal park | MaNta Ecuador’s port of Manta was founded by the conquistadors in 1535. It was an important center of the Manta culture, which thrived in this area from about a.d. 500. Explore the town and the Banco Central Museum’s excellent collection of archaeological artifacts. Also, drive to the interesting colonial town of Montecristi, an important center for wicker-work and the Panama hat industry. Or, spend the day at Machalilla National Park, protecting one of Ecuador’s few remaining coastal habitats. Over 200 species of birds and a variety of wildlife are found here. (B, L, D)

Before the Spaniards’ arrival in the 16th century, the area around Lima contained vibrant cities, two of which we will explore: Pachacamac, the largest pre-Columbian Peruvian coastal city and ceremonial center; and Puruchuco, the site of a pre-Inca noble’s palace. In Lima, visit

the historical center, a UNESCO World Heritage site; the National Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology; and the Gold Museum. Alternatively, fly to Cuzco for two nights/three days to explore the center of the Inca Empire and Machu Picchu, the Inca site dramatically set atop towering mountains.
