Crippled Chicks
Hatching chicks are disabled in feet or legsCauses:1) Improper incubation temperatures (usually too high)2) Improper egg position & turning during incubation3) Low humidity during incubation4) Improper ventilation5) Heredity6) Slick hatching trays7) Improper nutrition of breedersCorrective Measures:8) Follow recommended incubation temperatures9) Increase incubation humidity by increasing water evaporation10) Set eggs with small ends down.Turn eggs at least 3 times daily11) Proper culling & breeding practices12) Use trays with wire floors13) Provide a well-balanced nutritional diet to breeders
Crooked Toes
Hatching chicks have bent toes or any other irregular shape Causes:1) Improper temperature in setter2) Improper ventilation3) Improper nutrition of breedersCorrective Measures:4) Follow recommended incubation temperatures5) Provide a well-balanced nutritional diet to breeders
Spraddle Legs
Chicks hatch with splayed legs. The feet are pointing to side instead of forward making walking difficult
Causes:1) Temperatue fluctuations during incubation2) Difficult hatch3) Brooder overcrowdingCorrective Measures:4) Follow recommended temperature settings5) Provide proper conditions for normal hatching
Closed Eyes
Chicks hatch with closed eyes.Baby chicks have eyelids crusted or glued shut
Causes:1) High temperature in hatcher2) Low humidity in hatcher3) Improper nutrition of breedersCorrective Measures:4) Follow recommended incubation temperatures5) Increase incubation humidity by increasing water evaporation6) Provide a well-balanced nutritional diet to breeders
Missing Eyes
Chicks hatched with no eyesCauses:1) High temperatures2) Improper egg handling during incubationCorrective Measures:3) Follow recommended temperature settings4) Proper egg handling during incubation i.e. egg position, egg turning
Sticky Chicks (1)
Hatched chicks have albumin sticking to themCauses:1) High temperature2) Low humidity3) Too late egg transfer4) Inadequate ventilation5) Inadequate eggs turning during incubationCorrective Measures:6) Follow recommended temperature settings7) Increase humidity by water evaporation8) Egg transfering must be at its proper time9) Proper ventilation10) Proper egg handling
Sticky Chicks (2)
Chicks hatch with albumin sticking to shellCauses:1) Too high temperature (20-21 days)2) Broken eggs in the tray3) Inadequate turning4) Excessive ventilation rateCorrective Measures:5) Follow recommended hatcher temperature settings6) Proper egg handling7) Adequate ventilation
Chick Can’t Stand
Hatched chick is unable to stand. No splayed legsCauses:1) Imrproper temperature in hatcher2) High humidity in hatcher3) Malposition during incubation4) Improper nutrition of breedersCorrective Measures:5) Follow recommended temperature settings6) Provide normal humidity level7) Proper egg handling during incubation8) Provide well-balanced nutritional diet to breeders
Rough or Un-healed Navels
Chicks hatch with unhealed navels.May be wet or dry.Causes:1) High temperatures (1-19 days)2) High humidity (20-21 days)3) Navel infection (Omphalitis)4) Improper sanitation in incubator5) Improper nutrition of breedersCorrective Measures:6) Follow recommended incubation temperatures7) Keep humidity level at normal8) Clean & disinfect incubator and hatching units between settings of eggs9) Proper sanitation in incubator10) Provide well-balanced nutritional diet to breeders
Dehydrated Chicks
Causes:1) Low humidity level in hatcher2) Eggs set too early3) Improper transportationCorrective Measures:4) Maintain normal humidity level in hatcher5) Eggs setting should be at proper time6) Proper transportation
Soft or Mushy Chicks
Causes:1) High setter temperature2) High hatcher humidity3) Improper sanitary conditions in incubatorCorrective Measures:4) Follow recommended temperature settings5) Proper sanitation
Chicks Too Small
Causes:1) Small eggs2) Thin egg shell3) Too low humidity in setter (1-19 days)4) Egg produced in hot weather5) Diseased or poor breeder flock6) Improper nutrition of breedersCorrective Measures:7) Follow recommended temperature settings8) Set only standard sized eggs9) Use eggs from disease-free sources only10) Provide a well-balanced nutritional diet to breeders (especially vitamin
levels)
Chicks Too Large
Causes:1) Large eggs2) High humidity in setter3) Diseased or stressed breeder flock4) Poor ventilation5) Hatcher trays are not uniformCorrective Measures:6) Set only standard sized eggs7) Use eggs from disease-free sources only8) Proper ventilation9) Keep humidity level in normal range
Crossed Beak
Causes:1) Virus Infection2) Heredity3) MalpositionCorrective Measures:4) Proper disinfection of incubating and hatching units5) Proper Egg Setting
Chicks With Laboured Breathing
Causes:1) Excessive use of fumigant2) Respiratory diseasesCorrective Measures:3) Follow recommended fumigation procedures4) Check disease status of breeder flock5) Conduct a thorough cleanup & disinfection of incubator and hatching units
Exposed Brain
Causes:1) Heredity2) Too high humidity3) MalpositionCorrective Measures4) Follow recommended temperature settings5) Proper egg handling
Wry Neck
Causes:1) Improper nutrition of breeders2) MalpositionCorrective Measures3) Provide a well-balanced nutritional diet to breeders (especially vitamin
levels)4) Proper egg handling
Chick Death After Pipping
Causes:1) Genetic factors2) Improper nutrition of breeders3) Diseased breeder flock4) Eggs incubated with small end up5) Improper egg turning during 1st two weeks6) Eggs transferred from setter to hatcher too early7) Improper ventilation8) High CO2 level in incubator9) High temperature & humidityCorrective Measures10) Use eggs from disease-free source only11) Set eggs with small ends down.Turn eggs at least 3 times daily12) Proper ventilation13) Follow recommended temperature settings14) Proper ventilation15) Provide a well-balanced nutritional diet to breeders
