 Education Prompts Business Growth

President of the African Export-Import Bank,Jean-Louis Efra, announced on 14 Augustthat total African trade grew to $1 trillion in2010 from $200 billion in the early 90's. Mr.Efra spoke about the continuing growth ofeconomies across the continent as a result ofstable and increasingly prosperous economicand financial markets in the newlyestablished and effective democraticgovernments.

With an average GDP growth rate of 5% from2000 across Africa, economic growth in theregion has been significant enough to elevateZambia and Ghana into the World Bank's LowerMiddle Income Countries in the economicclassification system. In both Zambia and Ghana, aid accounts for a significantly lower proportionof government budgeting than it used to,suggesting that it is reaching the needy moredirectly and that governments’ increasinglyefficient democratic mechanisms are working

more effectively, financial stability being astrong basis for continuing positive social andpolitical change.

Economic growth has come from a range ofsocio-economic changes. Mr. Efra identified thatincreasing the contribution of entrepreneurs toAfrica's economic output and increasedinvestment in education has prompted Africa'sincreasing economic independence and stability. It comes as no surprise therefore that Mr. Efraannounced the impressive figures of growthduring his speech at the University of Nigeria.

The increasingly positive business environment isgiving entrepreneurs a higher chance of successin new business ventures as well as the ability toengage with young and mature professionals inemployment, allowing them to contribute at alllevels in the public and private sectors. Thediminishing reliance upon traditional academicpathways, up to and beyond degree level, means

that learners can add to their professionalknowledge and skills and play a part in theincreasingly positive economic outlook.
