ICAS COMPETITIONS 2019 In 2019 Aberfoyle Park High School will once again be participating in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Science, Mathematics and Digital Technologies competitions.

Over the last 30 years, ICAS has taken place each year in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa. It provides the opportunity for students to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding in science across five skills areas: observing/measuring, interpreting, predicting/concluding, investigating and reasoning/problem solving.

All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly along with their overall level of achievement. These competitions are excellent preparation for tests and examinations requiring students to work independently and concentrate for a sustained period of time. The student report is useful for highlighting your child’s strengths and areas in need of development. The certificate and individual student report are suitable for your child to include in a portfolio.

For more information on either of these competitions, including online practice tests, visit the Educational Assessments Australia website at www.eaa.unsw.edu.au.

The competitions will be held on the following dates:

• ICAS Digital Technologies (Years 8-10) – 2 September- 4 September • ICAS Science (Years 8-12) – 4 September - 6 September • ICAS Mathematics (Years 8-12) – 19 September – 20 September

If you would like any further information or would like to register your child for any of these competitions please contact me either by phoning the school or by email: [email protected]

9-A-SIDE FOOTBALL

On Tuesday 25 June we had two Aberfoyle Park High School squads for the 9-a-side football competition which took place at South Adelaide Football Club. Both teams won two out of five matches. Craig Nielson and Hayley Weidermann “coached” these two squads and were very impressed with our students and their sportsmanship. All students represented APHS with the upmost respect and we were very proud of them. We also had four student umpires come out for the day and a couple stepped in to help other games they weren’t timetabled for.

YEAR 12 FORMAL

During the evening of Friday 28 June, 206 Year 12 students, their guests and 20 Aberfoyle Park High School staff attended the 2019 Year 12 Formal at the Intercontinental Hotel in Adelaide. Students and staff enjoyed a three course meal and spent their time having photos taken and dancing. Along with the dancing, a highlight of the evening was the presentation of the special awards given to worthy students. It was a highly successful night enjoyed by all attendees.

Special thank you to the year 12 Formal Committee for their wonderful work, Sarah Johnson for all of the behind the scenes work and to all of the staff who supported our students.

METALWORK AND WOODWORK Throughout semester 1 the year 9 Materials class (Metalwork and Woodwork) worked on the design and construction of a metal balancing figure made using a range of metalworking equipment. This included gas welding, the metal lathe, metal bending and shaping equipment and a range of hand tools used for cutting and shaping metal.

The students devised a range of ideas and successfully and safely completed their projects to a good standard.

During the woodwork component of the course the class designed a small footstool using some basic wood joinery and finishing methods and also learned how to safely cut their chosen design for the legs of the project.

WELLBEING WEEK In week 9, term 2 the school held Wellbeing Week led by the Student Voice team with a schedule full of fun lunch time activities each day.

On the first day, the team ran a Henna Tattoo lunchtime activity. It was very cold however we had many students who weren’t in the Student Voice Team offering their time to be involved which was fantastic to see. We have so many creative and talented students at APHS!

On Tuesday the Student Quiz Show was held in the Staff Room. We had just over 40 students participate in this wellbeing activity which was again led by members of the Student Voice Team. Questions were challenging but there were clear winners in the end with the winning teams taking home Tim Tams kindly donated by local residents Rachel and Tyson Bristow.

WELLBEING WEEK (Cont’d) Wednesday saw the team run a BBQ Pledge activity. The goal was to get students to dress up in props/costumes, get out of their comfort zones and pledge to improve inclusive behaviour and inclusive friendships at our school. Once students lined up and took a photo with their friends, they were given a ticket. This enabled them to receive a free bbq and a soft drink. With over 200 students participating it was a great success.

Thursday was the Staff V Student Mixed Netball Match. Staff were lucky to have special guest player, Maurice Akele step out on the court to play. The swift, quick moves by Mr Akele allowed the ball to be taken down through the mid court in no time ready for our goalies to add to the score board, staff keeping the lead the entire game.

The Staff Team, captained by Wellbeing Leader, Hayley Wiedermann took out the win which provides bragging rights for another 12 months.

WELLBEING WEEK (Cont’d) Wellbeing week finished off on the Friday with a relaxing activity held again in the maths courtyard. This was the last day for Wellbeing Week which saw henna tattoos being brought back by popular demand, along with glitter face painting and student DJ request.

A very special thank you to all the staff and students who assisted with Wellbeing Week either by donating items, helping with crowd control, setting up the event or showing your support by coming to these lunchtime events. Your help made Wellbeing Week a resounding success enjoyed by many.

SACE STAGE 1 AND STAGE 2 DRAMA PRODUCTION On Wednesday 28 August and Thursday 29 August, SACE Stage 1 and 2 students will perform Clinchfield: ‘A Tale of Good Citizens’ by Caleb Lewis in our school’s Performing Arts Centre. The play in 1916 in Tennessee, at the Sparks World Famous Show Circus is where a five-ton Asian elephant named Mary kills a trainer. Unbelievably, the town decides Mary must be punished and sentence her to a public hanging. The details of the aftermath of this incident are a maze of sensationalism and folklore. Using fast-paced ensemble movement juxtaposed against poignant monologues, Clinchfield is not only a story about Mary, but about the nature of storytelling itself, and the myths that obscure truth.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION TRAINING (VET) MADEC – CERT III EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATIONAL CARE (ECEC)

Students from Aberfoyle Park High School (APHS) attend at over 20 different sites around Adelaide completing various Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses. Students studying in the Cert III ECEC at Christies Beach MADEC have been doing practical work in learning about diet and nutrition for young children. The course teaches them about how to manage and engage young children with play learning. They learn about diversity and how to care for children socially, emotionally and physically.

Students in this course are on their way to working in child care centres, kindergarten and junior primary schools with children under the age of eight. Nutrition and dietary intake is very important to fuel the body and brain to help with learning and functioning. The pictures below show students developing their skills in presenting food to children to make it appealing as well as delicious and nutritious.

DOORWAYS TO CONSTRUCTION (D2C) Students have been progressing in projects for the year developing their skills in a range of areas. They commenced the course obtaining their white card and first aid certificate. WHS is crucial and so students have completed this unit of work as they began their placements with various businesses. Each term students find an employer and work in the construction industry. Some find painting or tiling is what they want to do and others find first or second fix their speciality. The course develops students’ knowledge and skills as they complete theory and projects at school. The pictures show various students in the workshop and out on placement.

If you are interested in VET courses and opportunities or learning more about VET, please contact Kass Holmes, VET Leader by emailing [email protected] or contacting the school to speak with her.
