2015 VII ABEP CONFERENCE | 20-21st February 2015 - Imperial College LondonAssociation of Brazilian Postgraduate Students and Researchers in the United Kingdom
5 years3 4
2015 5 years3 5
Our conference is the major event in the ABEP’s calendar, since it is a great opportu-nity to see familiar faces again and welcome new ones. The seventh edition is even more special because it is a celebration of the long life of our association. It is not easy for an as-sociation of such kind to achieve this mark. In fact, ABEP is the oldest association of Brazil-ian academics abroad in operation.
This year, we are focusing on a common subject to every university corridor, be it in Brazil or in the United Kingdom: the interna-tionalisation of Science. Our members are on the crossroads of these discussions, since most of them benefit directly from the politi-cal agenda that make this internationalisation possible, providing them with a global per-spective, skills and confidence, hoping that they will bring back to Brazil economic and social development in their luggage.
The conference programme reflects this cur-rent topic. We have the presence of leading experts and respected figures from Industry, Academia and Government from Brazil and the UK.
We are kick starting the day with a big picture of the science and technology produced by both countries directly from the big players, the Chief Scientific Advisor for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Professor Robin Grimes, will open the conference with his views on the two-way road of Science and Technology in Britain, whereas Professor Campolina will share his experience as for-mer Principal of the Federal University of Mi-nas Gerais (UFMG) and former Brazilian Min-ister of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Equally exciting is our Panel on Mobility in Science, with speakers from Procter & Gam-ble, British Council, Embassy of Brazil and Universities UK Unit. Moreover, on the par-allel and poster sessions, you will find an excellent selection of the current research undertaken in the UK, presented by Brazilian postgraduate students and researchers from all over the island.
The venue for this fruitful day could not be more appropriate. Imperial College is a lead-ing technological university, it being the num-ber one destination for Brazilian postgradu-ate students and researchers in the UK.
ABEP would like to thank our Honorary Presi-dent, H.E. Ambassador Roberto Jaguaribe, for offering the Social Reception. We are in-debted to the Embassy of Brazil staff for their support and guidance. We are also grateful to our sponsors who enabled us to organise this event, in special, BP for the long-term support.
I hope you enjoy your time with us today, and I would like to invite you to join ABEP for the next 35 years.
Gledson EmidioABEP President
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the VII ABEP Conference to celebrate with us 35 years of ABEP.

ABOUT ABEP-UK
The ASSOCIATION OF BRAZILIAN POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS AND RESEARCHERS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM is a civil, nonprofit association based in London.
ABEP was founded in 1980 by a group of Brazilian researchers and students living in Lon-don, as a result of the movement for the redemocratisation of Brazil. At that time, when internet was still taking its first steps and telephone was a luxury, the students met daily at the ULU University of London Union, to discuss Brazil and read the latest updates from Brazil through the Brazilian newspapers brought by VARIG especially for the association.
Throughout these years, ABEP had adapted and evolved. Together with its formal rep-resentative roles, it became a virtual community of around 1500 subscribers and more than 300 registered members from all over the UK and from every area of knowledge. The conversation around the newspapers moved to our ABEP-L, a 15-year old electronic network by which students share their doubts and ideas, jobs are offered, movements are started and information about events and opportunities are distributed. Recently, social media has been also extensively used by our members and network.
