splashThe UAE’s water parks are a welcome (and necessary)
respite from the blisteringly hot summer months, but
for me, they are best enjoyed when I don’t have to hop
from one piece of shade to the next and when they
are perhaps not at their absolute bursting point with
queues a mile long!
We have more than our fair share of aquatic attractions
in the emirates so how do you choose one over the
other? Price, attractions, location, convenience, family
friendly, uniqueness ... the list goes on, so we decided
to give three of them a test ride ...
Wild WAdi - dUbAi
A stalwart of Dubai, Wild Wadi opened its gates in
1999, and continues to be a major attraction for
residents and tourists to the UAE.
Designed around a tale from Arabian folklore featuring
Juha and his seafaring friend, Sinbad, characters
marooned on an enchanted island, ride gushing
freshwater streams and waterfalls. And so can you!
The huge upside to this park is its convenience.
Sandwiched between the Burj al Arab and Jumeirah
Beach Hotel, you can hardly want for a quicker escape
to some watery fun. They also have safety down to a
fine art, with over 150 lifeguards on duty at any one
time you can rest assured someone’s taking care of
you and your family. Another plus has to be being able
to plop straight into a ring at the bottom of a ride, be
propelled skywards (by one of eight gravity-defying
Master Blasters) and then be on your way down any
number of slide options when you get to the top. That’s
one adrenaline rush after another with 13 (of its 30)
pulsating attractions inter-connected, so you can enjoy
them without ever leaving the water.
Earlier this year, regulars mourned the loss of the
heart-stopping ‘Jumeirah Sceirah’, to make way for
the new ride of the same name - but of a totally new
concept. Standing 32m high (makes my knees weak at
the thought!), victims, (though Wild Wadi prefer to say
‘guests’) stand in a capsule with a trap door unable to
see what the slide holds below. The trap door is then
suddenly released, and riders descend the 120m slide (a
70° angle drop) at an astonishing speed of over 80 km/h.
It really is wet-your-pants stuff!
Along with the standard but relaxing ‘Lazy River’ and
the ‘Tunnel of Doom’, a scary pitch-black slide, are two
relatively new rides called ‘Burj Surj’ and ‘Tantrum Alley’
incorporating slides, tornadoes and looming ‘bowls’.
Both are great fun but ‘Burj Surj’ terrifyingly so as its
massive ‘bowl’ opens out threatening to tip the raft
and it’s contents i.e. YOU, onto Jumeirah Road and
the unsuspecting cars below.
For surfers there are ‘Wipe-out’ and ‘Riptide’ Flow
Spoilt for choice here’s the low
down on all that’s splashingly new
at the UAE’s foremost waterparks -
grab your togs and prepare yourself
do some screaming!

AT A GLANCE WADI ADvENTURE
Riders offering realistic wave effects for body or knee boarding
as well as surfing. ‘Breaker’s Bay’, the region’s largest wave pool,
and Juha’s Dhow and Lagoon with interactive play structure make
it ideal for all ages. Wild Wadi still remains an accessible great
value-for-money park for some instant fun - without the drive!
YAS WATERWORld AbU dhAbi
The eagerly anticipated Yas Waterworld covering 15 hectares of
land, promises many things - the biggest, the fastest, the first - but
is it the funnest? At the time of going to press the waterpark was
yet to open its gates, however is all set to do so by the end of 2012.
Located at the centre of Yas Island’s entertainment complex,
the park boasts an amazing 43 rides, slides, and world-record
breaking attractions. Paying tribute to the UAE’s pearl-diving
heritage, it is themed around ‘The Lost Pearl’, (hence the rather
strange looking white globe visible from miles away). Dana,
a young Emirati girl is on a quest for the legendary pearl that
had once brought prosperity to her village. Visitors can join her
adventure to find the pearl on rides never seen before, including
‘Dawwama’ the first hydromagnetic 6-person water slide in the
world, and ‘Bubble’s Barrel’, the largest FlowBarrel 10 Double in
the world. (A surf wave for those of us not in the know.)
High-octane thrill-seekers will love Falcon’s Falaj - a 62° angle
drop slide from almost 21m, or the equally high ‘Liwa Loop’, the
only looping waterslide in the Middle East, featuring a launch
capsule with a trap door giving way to sheer excitement and
enough speed to have you loop back up and shoot out into a
catchpool! Be warned, screaming will NOT save you!
The PearlMaster, is the world’s only SplashQuest interactive
game inside a waterpark - consisting of an exciting adventure it
allows youngsters to embark on a magical journey through the
park going on a quest in search of lost treasures, interacting
with magical sea creatures, firing water cannons, solving ancient
puzzles, and more.
‘Sebag’ will satisfy the more competitive among us by giving six
people at any one time, the chance to race headlong against
each other, first in a closed tunnel then exiting into the open and
the final straight race to the finish line - all against the clock!
Finally, the ‘Bandit Bomber’ is destined to become a firm favourite
(for me anyway!) - equipped with 4-passenger coaches, riders
can spray and drop water on those below in the designated drop
zones as the roller coaster zooms by.
Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi say they guarantee everyone an
unforgettable day, whether enjoying individual adventures or
sharing memorable experiences in the family-sized attractions. I
think we might have to agree!
WAdi AdVENTURE - Al AiN
Wow. I mean, really - in Al Ain? Beige, unassuming historic little
Al Ain? Whitewater rafting, kayaking and surfing? Known for
its extensive natural cave system and hot water springs, Jebel
Hafeet has long been a tourist attraction for the region but you
now have another reason to visit this part of the UAE.
About an hour and a half from either Abu Dhabi or Dubai, Wadi
Adventure brings unique adventure to the emirates in the form of
130,000m2 of: Three world class whitewater rafting and kayaking
runs with a combined length of 1,133m. A surf pool capable
of making 3.3m high waves every 90 seconds. A rope course,
climbing wall and zip line. An adult and toddler swimming pool,
and what has to be the most unique corporate and event space
to be found in the Middle East.
Gushing away at the base of Jebel Hafeet lies a haven for
outdoor enthusiasts with a taste for adventure where you can
get the ultimate rush as you jump into a raft and try to tame
the longest man-made whitewater channels in the world. Fun for
everyone, rafting can be enjoyed by the entire family and requires
no previous experience or skill, with all raft trips subject to
compulsory (short) briefing and essential safety information. After
that it’s on with the life jacket and helmet and into a bright yellow
raft with your Nepalese guide at the helm. Although suitable for
everyone perhaps we should say everyone ‘those confident in
water’, because there is no doubt whatsoever that you will end
up in the drink at some point!
So, surfing in the desert? Sounds surreal, but here you get
the perfect wave (up to 3.3m) every 90 seconds, which makes
learning with pro instructors or practising, very efficient. (Booking
is essential).
If kayaking is your thing you can learn how to paddle, spin,
turn and roll with an instructor, or experienced kayakers can
explore three levels of water (Green, Blue or Black) for a different
challenge and thrill factor.
If you are looking for a unique venue for your next team building
event it might well be the perfect choice. The Wadi Adventure
team can even design and run the day for you if required. Treat
your staff or challenge them with some strategy and physical
tasks in an environment that seems to be tailor made for the job.
Finally, for the landlubbers, you can still test your daring on the
AirPark adventure course with climbing wall, high ropes, zip line
and a 14m falling swing! Face your fears on the aerial walkways
or fly across the channels and lakes by zip line, whatever you
choose it’s bound to be an adventure!

CORNEd bEEF hASh WiTh pOAChEd EggPotatoes are a very popular food source but unfortunately,
many people eat them in the form of oily french fries or potato
chips and even baked potatoes which are usually mixed with
fats such as cheese, butter, bacon bits and sour cream that
make potatoes a potential contributor to heart attack.
But avoid the deep fried version and they become a very
healthy low-calorie and high fibre food that offers significant
protection against several disease and keep body healthy.
Prepare this super easy brunch dish to enjoy potato at its
best - guaranteed to become a family favourite.
Ingredients [4 potatoes, diced into cubes, 3 tbsp olive oil,
1 onion, finely diced, 1 garlic clove, crushed, 340g/12oz
corned beef, tinned, Salt and freshly ground black pepper,
to taste, 1 tbsp vinegar, 1-2 free-range eggs (per person),
tomato ketchup, to serve]
Place the potatoes into a saucepan and cover with water.
Bring to the boil and simmer until just tender. Drain and set
aside. Heat a frying pan until hot. Add one tablespoon of the
olive oil, the onion and garlic and fry for two to three minutes.
Add the potatoes and fry for a further minute.
Crumble in the corned beef and mix together.
Spoon the mixture into a soup dish then place under the grill
for three to four minutes, until crusty.
Bring a pan of water to the boil, add the vinegar and whirl the
water around. Crack an egg into a ladle. Pour the egg into
the pan and simmer for two minutes, until ready. Remove
from the pan and drain.
Remove the hash from the grill and top with the egg.
Top with a squeeze of ketchup and serve with hot, buttered
corn bread if desired.
lEEk & pOTATO SOUpLeeks might make it into your meals in small proportions
but try using them as a main ingredient to benefit from
some significant nutrients. For example, a flavonoid called
kaempferol provides protection to the linings of the blood
vessels, particularly against free radicals or reactive oxygen
species. They also provide a bioactive form of folate called
5-methyltetrahydrofolate. Aside from being an important
vitamin during pregnancy, folate has been shown to lessen
the concentration of homocysteine in the blood. Note that
excessive levels of homocysteine promote inflammatory
conditions and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Leek also functions as an antioxidant (polyphenol), which
helps fight against free radicals that can cause many chronic
diseases and aging. Just a 100g portion of fresh leeks
contains about 33 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE).
By incorporating leeks into your diet, you can be sure that
you are receiving good amounts of essential nutrients.
Try making this smooth, creamy vegetable soup that’s full of
flavour - simple, quick and easy.
Ingredients [1 tbsp vegetable oil, 1 onion - sliced, 225g/8oz
potatoes - cubed, 2 medium leeks,sliced, 1.2 litres/2 pints
vegetable stock, 150ml/5fl oz double cream or crème fraîche,
salt and freshly ground black pepper]
Heat the oil in a large pan and add the onions, potatoes and
leeks. Cook for 3-4 minutes until starting to soften.
Add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil. Season well
and simmer until the vegetables are tender.
Whizz with a hand blender or in a blender until smooth.
Reheat in a clean pan, stir in the cream or crème fraîche,
heat through and serve. So easy!

Spend a little time and effort
making someone special some
gorgeous festive chocolates
It’s easy to go and buy chocolates, but why not show someone
how much you care by making some mouthwatering treats
yourself. Once they are made you can decorate or wrap them
with as much creativity as you like! Start with the following
and let your creativity do the rest ...
Ingredients [75g dark chocolate - 75% cocoa solids, 50g
luxury Belgian milk chocolate, 75g luxury Belgian white
chocolate, 100g pack whole blanched hazelnuts, 200g
mi-cuit plums, 50g shredded coconut (as long-thread as
possible - Pre-heat the oven to 180°C]
Begin by toasting the hazelnuts on a baking sheet on the
top shelf of the oven for 10 mins, then remove them from
the oven and allow them to cool. Now break up the three
chocolates into small pieces and melt them separately in
heatproof bowls over barely simmering water, making sure
the bowls don’t touch the water. Then remove them from the
heat and allow the chocolate to cool.
Now, using a small, sharp knife, carefully remove the stones
from 10 of the mi-cuit plums, leaving them whole. Now, holding
each one in a horizontal position, half-dip them lengthways in
the milk chocolate and space them out on the lined tray. Next
stir the toasted hazelnuts into the plain chocolate and pile
them, in approximately heaped teaspoonfuls, into 10 paper
cases.
Finally, stir the coconut into the white chocolate, divide the
mixture into 10, and use 2 forks to roughly shape each one
into a ball, then pop into the paper cases. Now leave all the
chocolates in a cool place to set for an hour (or in the fridge
if you are in a hurry, in which case they will need at least
30 minutes). When they have set, transfer the mi-cuit plums
to the paper cases. They will keep in a polythene container
in the fridge for up to a week. (You will also need 2 x 12-
hole mini-muffin tins, each lined with 10 mini-muffin or sweet
paper cases, and a tray lined with baking paper), plus 10
mini-muffin or sweet paper cases for the mi-cuit plums.)

Chocolate has been around since ancient times when the Mayans and the Aztecs discovered the cacao tree (Theobroma meaning ‘food of the gods’) and its seeds. Thus chocolate and its raw ingredients were highly regarded during ancient times. As a result, cacao seeds were even used as money for trading goods by the Aztecs and the Spaniards which continued on when Spain dominated the chocolate industry for a hundred years. Even though the drink originally created from the cacao seeds was bitter, it was only accessible to aristocrats and other royalty. Therefore, it became treasured and prized and eventually became special treats at special occasions and holidays such as Christmas. When industrialisation took care of grinding and pressing the cacao seeds, chocolate became more available to the public in
the form of chocolate bars and chocolate drinks mixed with milk which eventually led to the popularity of chocolates to be eaten plain or used for different recipes on many special occasions. This was especially true in the 19th century when chocolates were developed into highly delectable goods and were in demand especially during Christmas time.Chocolates were given as treats and gifts to children and loved ones. For example, Queen Anne, in the early 20th century, sent chocolates to soldiers during Christmas during World War i. The tradition continued and spread around the world. keeping this tradition alive, Abela presents a wide range of festive chocolates from Cadbury, Nestlé, Mars, kinnerton, and Quality Street, for grown ups and kids alike. hurry to get yours before they are all gone!

Located on the west crescent of the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, I’m
quite underwhelmed by the hotel exterior and unsure whether the
designer’s intent was to have guests likening their first impression
to that of a rather plainly giftwrapped present. Only to tear off the
brown paper to reveal the most exquisitely bejewelled gift you’ve
ever seen inside. Twisted golden pillars gleam among lavishly
upholstered chaise longue and high-backed chairs reaching up
to cathedral-high hand-painted ceilings where the gold theme
continues to swathe the entire lobby. Wow, is this what it’s like to
be an Anatolian Sultan with untold riches.
Rooms are equally opulent and the impeccable service is typically
Jumeirah, (if at times a little over-bearing), efficient, polite and
knowledgeable. Within the time it takes to get to our room, we
have a complete overview of the hotel and its facilities along with
locations and a run down of the restaurants and their envelop
times. Very impressive for a 3 minute trip to the 1st floor.
Being a Palm Jumeirah beachside resort, rooms offer exhilarating
vistas of the Arabian Gulf or Dubai’s impressive skyline depending
which side your room faces, so no one really misses out on
having a room with a view. It’s hard to define what makes the
perfect hotel room, but generally, sleep plays a big part and as
I’m devoured by a billowy cloud of pillows I know the bed has
been particularly well selected and a lie in will be in order to fully
appreciate its comfort.
Eventually dislodged from the pillows I found myself enjoying a
refreshingly good old ice lolly, fruit platter and iced water by the
pool as staff whizzed around making sure everyone was hydrated,
comfortable and in need of anything else. Well, yes actually, would
someone just gently lower me into the pool and point the straw
to my mouth occasionally? I say this in jest yet genuinely believe
that nothing would be too much trouble, but alas, I shall have to
put it to the test later as my spa appointment awaits.
A hamam, is a hamam, is a hamam, right? Wrong. Enter the
Talise Ottoman Spa and a calming other world where you can
journey through the invigorating Royal Hamam ritual and then
drift away for hours in darkened recessed lounges surrounding
an illuminated pool sipping on fresh juices or a platter of figs and
dates. Slip into the 40°C salt water indoor pool to ease away
tension and then lounge on the heated stone beds until you are
ready for the chillingly cold adventure shower or a stint in the
snow cabin to give your circulation a kickstart! You might just
have to ask someone to carry you back to your room you will be
so relaxed - problem is, they might just oblige.
Dinner was booked at Amara - a restaurant serving northern
Indian cuisine focusing on Mughalai curries, tandoori oven dishes
and biryanies with a unique one price for all concept. For AED
250 you get to order as many dishes from the a la carte menu
as you like, as many times as you like. My recommendation
though is to go for the tasting menu where small dishes of just
about everything are brought out to the table for you to try. Some
you will recognise, some you won’t, but that’s the beauty - you
don’t end up ordering your usual and you might find some new
favourites to add to your list. The dishes are fresh and abundant,
so you would be advised to wear clothes with an elasticated
waist, however out of fashion, and go there hungry, it’s all too
delicious to waste any.
This December, pack up a small bag and take yourself to Turkey,
albeit in Dubai, and spend a luxuriously decadent night at the
Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. Chill out in the spa, then close your
eyes and point to one of the many, many exclusively designed
cocktails in the Voda Bar - they are all good so it really doesn’t
matter where your finger lands. Then loll by the pool among the
palms or along the tranquil beach. It’s a great place to spend this
festive season - so go on, have a slice of Turkey for Christmas.
(Suitable for vegetarians!).

The gentle clatter of hooves on cobbles can be heard every now
and then, ferrying huddled passengers past festively decorated
window displays overflowing with caskets of sugar plums and
chocolate fir cones - Vienna at Christmas time is like being
caught in the scene of a oldy worldy Christmas card. Icy cold
and the air full of frost, your senses will be soothed by wafts
of roasting chestnuts and baked apples as your eyes catch
the strands of fairy lights suspended across narrow streets
like illuminated cobwebs against the dark winter sky. Here you
can leave behind the Vegas-style tackiness adopted by many
a metropolitan city and immerse yourself in a living, breathing
advent calendar moment in time.
Vienna is a city overflowing with history - from the Renaissance
to the industrial revolution and beyond, it doesn’t take much
to imagine life in another age as many of the buildings remain
pretty much the same as they did 100 years ago. The city was
alive back then and still today, with residents and tourists milling
through the narrow streets to their jobs or in search of the next
tourist attraction, of which there are countless. Wherever you
find yourself, you will be surrounded by brilliant architecture
- a harmony between old and new, a contrast of styles and
materials, unity of form - modern Viennese architecture. The
new Vienna Central Station will be one of the most modern in
Europe, contrasted with St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its iconic
ornately patterned, richly coloured roof, and roots dating back
to 1147. It’s a place where you can get out your camera, start
clicking, and before you know it, need to change out your full-
to-bursting 16GB memory card for a new one. But more of the
new Fuji E-X1 later.
Apart from being regarded as the City of Music because of its
musical legacy, Austria’s capital city of Vienna is also said to be
“The City of Dreams” because it was home to the world’s first
psycho-analyst - Sigmund Freud. The City’s roots lie in early
Celtic and Roman settlements that transformed into a Medieval
and Baroque city, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It
is well known for playing an essential role as a leading European
Music Centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism
through the early part of the 20th century. The Historic centre of

Ancient and modern meet on the streets of Vienna
the smells of Christmas permeate the winter air
Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles
and gardens, as well as the late-19th-century Ringstrasse lined with
incredibly grand buildings, monuments and parks.
The English name Vienna is borrowed by the Italian name Vienna.
“Vienna” and the official German name Wien, and the names of the
city in most languages, are thought to be derived from the Celtic
word “windo-”, meaning bright or fair – as in the Irish “fionn” and
the Welsh “gwyn” – but opinions vary on the precise origin. Some
claim that the name comes from Vedunia, meaning “forest stream,”
which subsequently became Venia, Wienne and Wien. Others claim
that the name comes from the Roman settlement of Celtic name
Vindobona (Celtic “windo-bona”), probably meaning “white base/
bottom [land],” which became Vindovina, Víde (Czech) and Wien.
Who knows, but we are not here on a historic pilgrimage, lovely
though all that is, no, we are in Vienna for the Christmas markets.
Just one of the things that make the city special at this time of year.
Dotted around the city, they are heavy with the fragrance of freshly
cut pine trees and ginger biscuits, so wrap up warm and take a stroll
through a time since past.
The Christmas Markets in Vienna truly are an age-old tradition.
The forerunners of the present-day events date back to the
Middle Ages when in 1298 Albrecht I granted Vienna’s citizens the
privilege of holding a December Market or “Krippenmarkt”. Since
then, the character and prevalence of these markets has changed
considerably. Nowadays over 20 official Advent Markets sell a vast
array of seasonal gifts and mouth-watering treats.
Some of the market’s offerings can be a little twee in places, but
even the kitchiest decorations have their fair share of labour put into
making them that way. From heart-shaped cookies to glass baubles
and gingerbread houses they all have their place at Christmas and
regardless of their clichéd appearance it just wouldn’t be the same
without them.
You will find the Friday organic market on Freyung, with its jars of
local honey and home-made sauerkraut and then - almost hidden
behind a mass of spruce trees - one of the city’s several Christ-

kindlmarkts. This is where you come for a taste of some of the city’s
local delicacies, like sharp shredded cabbage with slender smoky
sausages, twists of bread dough and slices of spice cake. Hot toast
with swathes of molten cheese from the raclette or a paper cone of
roasted chestnuts - braziers proffering nuts plump and sweet, split
skins all the easier to pop open and nibble on as you browse.
Vienna seems to be the home of hot pancakes with fruit compotes,
freshly baked cookies and crisp apple strudel. Yes, and doorbells
and sleighbells and schnitzel with noodles. It is a place to sit idly
watching the world go by over a generously whipped-cream-topped
coffee with a side of Sachertorte, and of course lashings more
cream. Bite into a schnitzel the size of a house or tuck into a hearty
plate of boiled beef and vegetables ladled over ribbons of pancake
and spring onions. Everything designed to warm your cockles from
the inside out - and with a little dusting of snow, Vienna, it would
seem, is just made for Christmas. It is also a photographer’s dream,
and it was time to play with the Fuji X-E1 to see how it performed.
The more affordable counterpart to the well-regarded X-Pro1, it is
an interchangeable lens, mirrorless camera with the same powerful
APS-C sensor, shedding 30% in size and 21% in weight. In essence
a slimmed-down X-Pro1, with the large, complex and expensive
hybrid finder replaced by a purely-electronic viewfinder, and roughly
a 41% price difference (from $1,700 to $1,000).
The camera noticeably smaller than the X-Pro1, retains the same
Leica-esque retro rangefinder design - feeling light, yet solid and
sturdy and for me, drop dead gorgeous. It’s also a camera that oddly,
people do not get nervous about being photographed with. Maybe
it’s the retro look that gives people the idea I’ve nicked my grandad’s
old film camera. I’m not sure, but it certainly does not have the
same effect that my DSLR has - one of sometimes downright anger,
shyness or intimidation. No, the X-E1 seems to be welcomed like an
old friend, it’s really quite perplexing.
Feature-wise, the X-E1 is virtually identical to its bigger (and more
expensive) sibling. It still has a 16MP CMOS sensor, ISO that can
be boosted to 25,600, 1080p HD video recording, and RAW files.
It gains a lovely little built-in flash, longer battery life, and a built-in
mic jack, but loses some speed (3fps instead of 6) in addition to
the hybrid viewfinder. You have a vivid 2.8-inch LCD screen on the
back and the top of the camera hasn’t changed in its layout, except
everything is just a tad smaller.
So, on to performance. We put it to the test with high ISO’s, low
light and glaring sun, so how did it do? The electronic viewfinder
lags a little in low-light. The shutter lag has reportedly been reduced
to 0.05 seconds, and the focusing speed to 0.1 seconds and it did
indeed seem like the autofocus was snappy and useable.40

Testing was done with 3 interchangeable lenses, which
personally I found quite tedious for such varied shots in and
around the city. However, with the knowledge that a new XF
18-55mm F2.8-4 R OIS LM lens will soon be available it makes
the X-E1 a very solid choice, both specs-wise and in its design.
For the price, you get a DSLR-sized sensor, and a piece of
kit that suits everyday snapshots as well as more serious
photographic assignments.
My one gripe if I am to be picky with the XE1 and X-Pro1 is the
lack of a decent RAW workflow. If I were to recommend as a pro
grade option, then RAW is a must for shooting. The software is
still awkward and although Adobe’s LR 4.1 converts the files, it
does so very poorly. The JPEG’s are great (seen in this article),
but the X-Pro1 is billed as a “professional” level camera, and
yet it is extremely difficult to get good RAW output.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN VIENNA
From mid-November to Christmas, Vienna’s prettiest
squares transform into magical Christmas markets. The
aroma of baked cookies and gingerbread filling the air.
Rathausplatz becomes a shining fairytale land. The 150
or so sales stands offer Christmas gifts, Christmas tree
decorations, sweets and warming drinks. The trees of
the surrounding City Hall park are festively decorated and
radiate in a sea of lights.
Not far away is the Christmas village on Maria-Theresien-
Platz, situated between the Museum of Fine Arts and the
Natural History Museum. Over 60 stands offering traditional
handicrafts and original gift ideas are set up here during
Advent. The romantic Christmas village in the Old AKH is
also a popular meeting point during the run-up to Christmas,
especially for the younger crowd.
The Old Viennese Christmas Market on Freyung in the
city centre is committed to tradition. A Christmas market
was held here as early as 1772; today, it is a place to
buy handicrafts, glass decorations, traditional cribs and
ceramics. Top-quality handicrafts can also be purchased a
couple of steps further along at the Am Hof Advent Market.
The cultural and Christmas market in the Ehrenhof in front
of Schönbrunn Palace offers romance in front of an imperial
backdrop, and is converted into a New Year›s market after
Christmas. The Advent market in front of Belvedere Palace
is also held in an imperial ambience. There’s also lots to
discover in the idyllic little lanes of the Christmas market on
Spittelberg.
