‘BEEHIVE BUZZ’ – An integrated project on ‘food’
PROJECT DAY INAUGURATION – 19.01.2017

Educational systems serve students best if they enable and encourage
students to build their own interdisciplinary pathway. What it takes to put such a
system in place is availability of working time and collaborative team work.
With this approach in mind the Primary team of teachers narrowed down to
working with ‘food’ as a topic to be integrated in all disciplines.
With content rooted in everyday life experience, we encouraged students to
work around chosen areas in the form of interviews, surveys, paper presentations
and display materials during their Christmas holidays and this gave form to
thought.
The measure provided the children an authentic learning experience that
built varied perspectives and a whole lot of transferable skills such as critical
thinking, synthesis and research that paved way for future learning experiences.
I feel extremely happy and would love to experiment with newer learning
and ways to transform the same into meaningful experiences for young
learners……
In an endeavour to provide ground for meaningful
knowledge building and purposeful learning opportunities
‘Team Primary’ thought of a Project Day.
The theory of Constructivism (how people
learn) suggests that people create their own
understanding and knowledge of the world through
experiences and reflection on those experiences. It
goes on to suggest that when students encounter
something new, they have to integrate it with
previous ideas and experiences by connecting the
new knowledge to something already known.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:
To work on connect English language learning with the topic food.
BRIEF NOTE ON THE PROJECT:
Students brought out the relation between food and English language through various activities and displays that highlighted the varied use of language. They
discovered ways to present an argument with evidences based on their findings. Their book reviews and story writing show cased their creative minds.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:
To associate concepts learnt in Maths to the topic food.
BRIEF NOTE ON THE PROJECT:
Math concepts like shapes and numbers, fractions, symmetry, measurement –
Length, weight, capacity, time were linked to the topic food. Data was collected and the
same represented through different graphs. As a prerequisite the students took up
surveys and interviews during their Christmas Holidays. This enabled them to collect
authentic information and they had a taste of what it is to conduct surveys and present
papers on their findings.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:
To explore the importance of food in daily life and study the source, nutritive
value and impact.
BRIEF NOTE ON THE PROJECT:
Children presented the process of photosynthesis, explained the different
sources of food, types of food groups, the concept of food chain and interdependence,
food pyramid and its impact, the need for a balanced diet, the causes and symptoms of
deficiency diseases, preferred cooking methods, healthy eating habits, methods of crop
cultivation, food spoilage, preservation techniques and a survey and paper presentation
on wastage of food and healthy eating habits.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:
To integrate topics learnt in Social Science with food
BRIEF NOTE ON THE PROJECT:
Students explored the influence of food in culture, landforms, seasons, and
festivals of the past and of modern times. Students were encouraged to work around
Indian cuisine, Regional cuisine, Landforms and its food, Harvest Festivals and food
that is cooked as a traditional meal, Evolution of food over the years, compare and
contrast western and Indian food, arrive at healthy suggestions on a day to day diet
and find and share seasonal delights.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:
To integrate technology with concepts and topics learnt in Math, Science, SST
and English.
To integrate IT skills to present inter disciplinary learning.
BRIEF NOTE ON THE PROJECT:
Students worked with various technologies like multimedia, spreadsheet, word
processing, desktop publishing and programming to present their project on the
topic ‘Food’.
Various sub topics like Food chain, International food festivals, Evolution of food
habits, Analysis on age appropriate consumption of healthy food etc., were employed
to integrate other subjects with Computer Science.
Study was done using questionnaire and live interviews and concluded based on
their findings.

Students were encouraged to present a few experiments and talk about details
deduced at the end of each and their relevance to the topic food. They integrated
their learning across subjects such as Environmental Science, Chemistry,
Physics and Biology.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:
To study the recent cyclone ‘Vardha’ in terms of cause and effect and its impact
on human life birds and animals
To encourage students to study the various aspects of ‘Vardha’, the role of satel-
lite in predicting the cyclone and the destruction caused along with the mitigation
measures.
BRIEF NOTE ON THE PROJECT:
Students analysed the recent cyclone ‘Vardha’ by reading news papers; listening
to experts and by browsing the internet. Students also studied the role of satellites in
forecasting and taking images. The impact of vardha on birds, commuters, trees, the
various precautionary measures to be taken by the government to safeguard people and
the role of satellites was presented in the form of power point presentations.
Students were given various topics to work on. Collecting and compiling of pic-
tures and information was done. Students were selected to work in groups for presenta-
tion like charts, displays and PPT. Students understood the aspects and the impact of
the cyclone.
