Course Description

This full-day course will review the latest in diagnosis and management of pediatric orthopaedic pathologies, pediatric trauma and sports injuries commonly treated in the community.

Topics will include common pediatric fractures and injuries, congenital and developmental pathologies, pediatric foot deformities, evaluation of the limping child, as well as tips and techniques for management of common presentations in emergency room and offi ce.

Target Audience

Pediatricians, emergency room health care providers, family medicine practitioners, physiatrists, residents, physician assistants, physical trainers, nurse practitioners involved in the care of children with orthopaedic conditions and sports injuries.

Statement of Need

Many pediatric orthopaedic pathologies seen in the new born nursery, outpatient offi ce or in the emergency room are fi rst seen by pediatricians or general orthopaedists. With increasing sub-specialization, there has been decreased time spent during medical school education on the musculoskeletal exam and evaluation of pathologies. Thus there is a need for a review of the pediatric orthopaedic conditions and sports injuries, commonly encountered by physicians who are not pediatric orthopaedists in our community. Some pediatric fractures require sedation in the emergency room or other setting for reduction. Familiarity with such principles ensures a good reduction and safe care. As children are growing, and radiographic appearances often vary between ages, it is often diffi cult to know which test to order and how to interpret radiological fi ndings related to pediatric injuries.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:• Develop treatment protocols to diagnose, manage and refer

pediatric orthopaedic pathologies and sports injuries

• Describe safe technique and options with sedation in the setting of pediatric fracture reduction

• Develop familiarity with choosing, ordering and interpreting radiological tests when treating a child with an injury

Course Description

This full-day course will review the latest in diagnosis and m

anagement of pediatric orthopaedic pathologies, pediatric traum

a and sports injuries com

monly treated in the com

munity.

Topics will include comm

on pediatric fractures and injuries, congenital and developm

ental pathologies, pediatric foot deform

ities, evaluation of the limping child, as well as tips and

techniques for managem

ent of comm

on presentations in emergency

room and offi ce.

Target Audience

Pediatricians, emergency room

health care providers, family

medicine practitioners, physiatrists, residents, physician assistants,

physical trainers, nurse practitioners involved in the care of children with orthopaedic conditions and sports injuries.

Statement of N

eed

Many pediatric orthopaedic pathologies seen in the new born

nursery, outpatient offi ce or in the emergency room

are fi rst seen by pediatricians or general orthopaedists. W

ith increasing sub-specialization, there has been decreased tim

e spent during medical

school education on the musculoskeletal exam

and evaluation of pathologies. Thus there is a need for a review of the pediatric orthopaedic conditions and sports injuries, com

monly encountered

by physicians who are not pediatric orthopaedists in our comm

unity. Som

e pediatric fractures require sedation in the emergency room

or other setting for reduction. Fam

iliarity with such principles ensures a good reduction and safe care. As children are growing, and radiographic appearances often vary between ages, it is often diffi cult to know which test to order and how to interpret radiological fi ndings related to pediatric injuries.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:• Develop treatm

ent protocols to diagnose, manage and refer

pediatric orthopaedic pathologies and sports injuries

• Describe safe technique and options with sedation in the setting of pediatric fracture reduction

• Develop familiarity with choosing, ordering and interpreting

radiological tests when treating a child with an injury
