Last Chance To See: Kakapo

Sunday, 7 November 2010

Stephen Fry and naturalist Mark Carwardine continue their adventure in search of animals on the edge of extinction around the globe.

Stephen and Mark head off to see the nocturnal flightless parrot – the Kakapo in New Zealand. They fly in a helicopter through the dramatic landscape of Fijordland – the last location of the Kakapo on the mainland.

The travellers encounter Kiwi in the woodland and learn a little about flightless birds and evolution in New Zealand.

They then travel to Wellington and see a Maori Kakapo cloak made of Kakapo and Kiwi feathers before travelling to an island to see the Weta – the biggest insect in the world. They also meet Peter Jackson, the director of Lord of The Rings, and a founder of Weta Conservation.

The travellers get a boat to the Chatham Islands where they see the New Zealand Black Robin and learn how clearing the island of predators enabled it to survive on this tiny island. They meet Don Merton, legendary conservationist who saved the robin – and the Kakapo.

Don takes the boys to see place he last saw Kakapo on the mainland.Mark and Stephen then fly to an island south of New Zealand where the Kakapo live without predators. They have to undergo stringent bio-security to ensure they do not infect the island.

On the island they meet volunteers and a tame Kakapo named Sirrocco. They also see the track and bowl system the Kakapo use to breed and they see the first bird of the season to lay eggs. It turned out to be the best year on record for young Kakapo.

Poirot: Evil Under the Sun

Sunday, 7 November 2010

Poirot (David Suchet) takes a holiday for the benefit of his health, staying at a stylish hotel on an island off the south coast of Devon. There he relaxes by studying the motley group of fellow guests, including a previous acquaintance, the famous fashion designer Rosamund Darnley (Marsha Fitzalan).

The atmosphere at the hotel grows tense with the arrival of Kenneth Marshall (David Mallinson) and his beautiful young wife Arlena Stuart (Louise Delamere). She openly flirts with another guest, Patrick Redfern (Michael Higgs), and appears to enjoy the fact that his wife Christine (Tamzin Malleson) is madly jealous.

When Arlena is found murdered on a beach, Poirot starts to question fellow guests at the hotel. Several of them have very good reason for wishing Arlena dead, from her cuckolded husband Kenneth and his disgruntled teenage son, to the jealous Christine Redfern and the intensely troubled vicar, Stephen Lane (Tim Meats).

With the help of Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson), Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser) and Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran), Poirot gradually establishes the whereabouts of all the suspects at the time the murder took place. With his extraordinary powers of observation and his insight into human nature, Poirot unravels one of the most complex cases of his career.

An African Journey With Jonathan Dimbleby

Tuesday, 9 November 2010 New Series

Africa consists of more than 50 countries. Each one is unique. With its population of more than a billion, Africa is the most culturally and ethnically diverse continent on the planet.

In this three-part series, Jonathan Dimbleby, one of the UK’s most respected journalists, reveals Africa as it is: a continent that is vibrant with energy, imagination, innovation and talent, populated by a wide range of individuals and communities who face great challenges but approach them with optimism and resolve.

Travelling from the Sahara to Nigeria, Dimbleby meets Africans who, so far from being victims of circumstance, have taken control of their own destinies. Utilising 21st century technologies they are shaping the world in which they live while managing to preserve their unique cultures which go back many centuries before the colonial era.

Then he heads southward from the Horn of Africa, through Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania – where he discovers the peoples of these countries do not sit back with begging bowls at the ready waiting for Western aid; that they are resourceful and self-reliant.

On the final leg of his epic journey, Dimbleby travels through Democratic Republic of Congo to Zambia and South Africa, the continent’s richest and most powerful nation.

In episode one, Jonathan Dimbleby starts his African journey in the capital of Mali, Bamako, the fastest growing African city. He meets an industrious population, some of whom go to extraordinary lengths to make a living. In Ghana, the King of the Ashanti gives Jonathan a royal welcome and in Nigeria he meets Africa’s richest man before enjoying the creative talents of some of the continent’s brightest music stars.

Sleek Geeks: Superhuman

Thursday, 11 November 2010 New Series

Dr Karl and Adam Spencer return to our screen with eight brand new episodes of the science series that doesn’t take itself too seriously. In this opening episode Karl and Adam look at the amazing complex things our bodies do in our everyday activities.

Every one of us shows unbelievable attributes, even if we don’t realise it. Learning to walk, holding an egg without crushing it, recognising people by the pattern of their movement. We explore nerve reflexes and why they protect us and we get right inside the ear. Along the way we learn the best way to kill a cockroach.

Karl embarks on a personal journey to prove his belief that you can lift a car off the ground using human hair. Karl gathers hair from volunteers, which is then woven into hanks by the Geelong Handweavers & Spinners Guild. The hanks are then made into a rope by a professional rope maker. Karl then takes the rope to the CSIRO to try and prove his theory.

Adam investigates red blood cells and discovers they process enough liquid to fill an Olympic swimming pool every 90 minutes. Ruben makes Adam lie on a bed of nails. If that’s not bad enough, Ruben then places a concrete block on Adam’s chest and smashes the block with a sledgehammer. An audience member is asked to rank the weight of body parts. It is not as easy as you might think…

Cleaver’s gambling debts are mounting, but on the upside, and much to the chagrin of tax lawyer David Potter (Matt Day) who’s been in constant pursuit, Cleaver has managed to get the case against him adjourned once again.

But trouble is brewing with Barney (Russell Dykstra) and Scarlet’s (Danielle Cormack) marriage and Cleaver is the meat in the sandwich. After their recent heart-to-heart, Scarlet turns up at Cleaver’s flat hinting at an affair, and hiding when Barney arrives a few minutes later.

Meanwhile, Cleaver and Barney take on a case of jury tampering, where Lucy Marx (Lisa McCune), an attractive 40-year-old - a detail that doesn’t go unnoticed by Cleaver - has made headlines by seducing a juror for information after her daughter is found guilty of murder.

But Cleaver is left reeling when ‘Missy’ (Adrienne Pickering) turns up at a restaurant on the arm of his nemesis David Potter, who a few days later makes headlines when he tackles a gunman, gets shot, and becomes a ‘hero’.

Meanwhile, Cleaver reluctantly agrees to let his son Fuzz (Keegan Joyce) use his flat for assignations with his girlfriend, while Fuzz’s mum is kept in the dark. Barney, convinced that Lucy Marx is right about her daughter’s innocence, sets off to unearth the real murderer, but doesn’t quite get the result he was looking for.

With a tip-off from his prosecutor wife Scarlet, Barney warns Cleaver that Lucy Marx is using him. As Cleaver tries to manipulate the court case, his relationship with Lucy Marx is revealed, and makes him, yet again, the target of investigation by the Bar Association.

Collectors

Friday, 12 November 2010

Tonight on Collectors we head to historic Beechworth in the heart of Ned Kelly country, VIC, and bump into actors Sigrid Thornton and John Jarrett in the process. For the last eight years Beechworth has hosted the annual Ned Kelly Weekend. One hundred and thirty years ago Ned was committed for trial in the Beechworth courthouse, and thirty years ago the telemovie The Last Outlaw, which starred Sigrid and John, was filmed in the town.

We meet an utterly dedicated collector and curator, Matt Shore, who has meticulously assembled the biggest and best private collection of Ned Kelly memorabilia in the world. It includes Ned’s death mask, his favourite rifle, ammunition taken from Ned at Glenrowan, the only original reward notice from 1878, the suit of armour that Mick Jagger wore in the 1970 movie, and much, much more.

Local collector Kevin Smith has always loved Holdens. At the tender age of twelve, he wrote to every metropolitan and country dealership, asking for brochures and driver’s handbooks. Most of them responded, so Kevin’s collection is unique. When he was old enough, he started collecting the real thing, and now his paddock full of Holdens stands at 107. His aim is to have at least one example of every model ever made.

Then it is Greg and Verna Pestell we meet, along with their collection of 20th century glass. Twenty years in the making, the tally is well over 1200 objects, in all shapes and colours.

Gordon Brown takes over as we move to the National Museum of Australian Pottery in the nearby town of Holbrook. Bendigo, Fowler and Campbell potteries are well represented here, as are some of the earliest works done by convict potters who brought their skills from Staffordshire.

The re-enactment of Ned’s parading to the Courthouse, committal and departure to Melbourne in chains winds up the show. Not to be missed.

New Tricks: The Last Laugh

Saturday, 13 November 2010

To celebrate Gerry’s (Dennis Waterman) birthday, Emily (Hannah Waterman) takes her reluctant ‘father’ and the team to a comedy club. However, one of the acts causes trouble – racist, sexist and homophobic comedian Ray Harris (John Henshaw) is not everyone’s idea of a funnyman. Gerry’s enjoyment is certainly at odds with a group of hecklers, who cause such a commotion that they are manhandled out of the gig. Somewhat affronted by their treatment, Pullman (Amanda Redman) intervenes and discovers that the most vocal of the hecklers, Jo (Madeleine Herrington), is the niece of a political activist Sarah Jones, who went missing with her boyfriend 25 years ago after waging a campaign against Harris and his act.

Warming to the feisty Jo, Pullman agrees to reinvestigate Sarah’s disappearance. But it is a case that opens up a very dangerous can of worms for the Unsolved Crime And Open Case Squad (UCOS). They discover that Sarah and her boyfriend, Daniel, had infiltrated an extreme right-wing group, the 20/4s, and were acting as informants for Gerry’s former colleague and love rival, DCS Frank Paterson (Phil Daniels).

Gerry’s old snout (informer), Polish George (Linal Haft), also reveals a direct link between the 20/4s and Jack’s (James Bolam) nemesis, Ricky Hanson (David Troughton).

Hanson has proved himself almost untouchable, having managed to completely discredit UCOS during his trial for Jack’s attempted murder, and having got away with the murder of Jack’s wife, Mary. How the team act on the revelation that he is possibly involved in this case is crucial. If they get it wrong, they could potentially destroy UCOS. But with Hanson once again in their sights, will the boys be able to stick to the rules?

Spooks

Saturday, 13 November 2010

When eight of the richest men in the world come together for a secret meeting of the exclusive Bendorf group, Ros (Hermione Norris) is sent undercover to plant a bug. But what begins as a fairly routine operation becomes a life-or-death situation when a group of armed terrorists storm the meeting, taking everyone hostage.

The hostages are held captive in a secure underground bunker. There is one way in, but the room is rigged with explosives and the only entrance is controlled by the terrorists, led by the passionate Finn Lambert (Pascal Langdale).

The world is left reeling when Lambert puts Thomas Mickelson (Tom Mannion), one of the Bendorf group, on trial and broadcasts it live on the internet for all to see. Section D watches in horror as Lambert produces damning evidence of Mickelson’s alleged crimes and then invites the public to vote on the outcome of the trial. There is a resounding ‘guilty’ verdict and Lambert takes it upon himself to administer justice by executing Mickelson, with the cameras still rolling.

With Lambert intending to put each member of the Bendorf group on trial, Harry (Peter Firth) and his team fear more bloodshed. The race is on to rescue the Bendorf group before CO19 storm the bunker and everyone dies, including Ros.

As the next trial begins, Lambert gets increasingly out of control. Cut off from the rest of the team, it is up to Ros to try to turn his idealistic girlfriend, Nina (Antonia Campbell-Hughes). Can she persuade Nina to help her before more people are killed, or has Section D run out of time?

Art Nation

This week on Art Nation Fenella Kernebone is off to see Sydney’s back streets being made over by nine of Australia’s most respected contemporary artists in an exciting new laneway art project Are You Looking At Me? Using light projection, sound, text and imagery these artists have used their installations to create an outdoor gallery experience to breathe new life into these forgotten spaces.

Art Nation also checks out Belvoir Street Theatre’s tribute to the great Australian Indigenous artist, Albert Namatjira. Namatjira is written and co-directed by Big hART’s Scott Rankin. Half a century after Namatjira’s death, Belvoir Street and Big hART have invited some of his descendants – third generation watercolour artists – to spend six weeks filling the Belvoir St corner with a huge drawing of Namatjira’s country. Each night as they draw, Trevor Jamieson will retell Namatjira’s extraordinary life.

And finally, Art Nation previews the intricate works of Melbourne artist Emma van Leest. Van Leest’s mind-boggling paper cutting skills have their roots in women’s handicraft traditions and her art draws on religious, oriental, folk art, fairytale and Hindu literature themes.

Talking Heads: Lambis Englezos

This week onTalking Heads Peter Thompson is joined by Lambis Englezos, the amateur historian responsible for solving one of the great mysteries of the First World War.

Englezos found the mass grave at Pheasant Wood near Fromelles in northern France, an unmarked burial ground of 250 Australian and British soldiers. They had been among the thousands of soldiers who died on one single horrific night during the Battle of Fromelles in 1916.

Along with a few supporters, Englezos spent years gathering evidence about the grave site and then had to persuade reluctant military authorities that it was worth investigating.

His research proved to be spot on. And finally this year the ‘missing’ soldiers were reburied in a new military cemetery in France dedicated in their honour, in front of families and dignitaries.

Why did Lambis – who arrived here from Greece as a boy - become so passionately interested in Australian military history. And what next after Fromelles?

Poh's Kitchen

For many there is nothing as good as a piece of meat that has been slow-cooked: the tender, succulent slices just seem to melt in your mouth.

The Chinese have a great tradition of slow-cooking and tonight Poh cooks Dong Do Pork. If you enjoy a store-bought char siew, this is a far superior homemade version. During the cooking process it develops the most beautiful glossy mahogany colour all over, with tenderness on the inside.

Poh’s good friend, Chef Emmanuel Mollois is with her in the kitchen and his slow-cooked recipe is lamb shoulder confit with spices. For Emmanuel this is a dish full of tradition and memories. It’s a combination of French and Moroccan influences that he first tasted as a young man in Morocco. Once the lamb is cooked it is so tender you can spoon it on to the plate. He accompanies the lamb with a Moroccan-styled couscous salad and a traditional French ratatouille.

Poh’s Dong Do Pork is also full of memories. One of the best she has, apart from it being absolutely delicious, was what happened after cooking it for the first time with her Great Aunty Kim. After dishing up, Poh was about to dump the cooking pot into the sink for washing, but her aunt made her put the pot down. She got a bowl of leftover rice from the fridge and tipped the rice into the pot, swished all the grains around with her hand to mop up the beautiful caramelisation, before returning the rice to the bowl. In Cantonese she announced, “lunch tomorrow”, then briskly walked away to tend to some gardening...genius…and so are the slow-cooked recipes from this episode.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, November 11 at 6:00pm
