In the enedictine tradition of nurturing the arts and learning O ne hundred twenty-three years ago Saint Martin’s Abbey was founded by the Benedictine monks of Saint John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota. In 1980, during the sesquimillennial celebration honoring Saint Benedict of Nursia and eighty-five years after Saint Martin’s founding, the Abbot and monks of Saint Martin’s Abbey established Abbey Church Events. Part of a centuries-old Benedictine tradition of nurturing the arts and learning, Abbey Church Events is an annual concert and lecture series which has presented more than one hundred fifty scholarly lectures and classical music concerts by some of the most luminous scholars and artists of our day. Some of our Abbey Church Events artists also present master classes or public lectures at Saint Martin’s University while at the Abbey. Although Abbey Church Events lectures and concerts are offered to the public free of charge, a freewill donation in support of the series is suggested. The series is underwritten by the interest on a small endowment established by the Benedictine monks of Saint Martin’s Abbey, by freewill donations, bequests, and occasional grants and matching gifts. The Abbot Gerald R. Desmond Lectures receive support from a bequest of Lou Waynick Beck. During the 2018-2019 season we are especially grateful for the continued support of Olympia Federal Savings, a gift from an anonymous friend of Abbey Church Events, support from family and friends of the late Carol Tamblyn Carlson, the Annaliese Soros Educational Residency Program of Young Concert Artists, and for special services provided by the Norcia Community, Saint Martin’s University. www.saintmartinsabbey.org/churchevents Graphic Design: Saint Martin’s Abbey Printing: Tumwater Printing 1980 Daniel Adni • Montserrat Alavedra • Susan Almasi • The Amadeus Trio • Amsterdam Guitar Trio • Ning An • Agustin Aníevas • Ulrike Anima Mathé • Anonymous 4 • Mariko Anraku • Carol Archer • Arden Trio • Lydia Artymiw • Brian Asawa • Carlos Avila • Franck Avril • Bach Aria Group • Maria Bachmann • Benjamin Bagby • Dalton Baldwin • Efe Baltacigil • Andrei Banciu • Washington Barella • Basically Woodwinds • Edward Battersby • Jean-Efflam Bavouzet • Malcolm Bilson • Fabio Biondi • Justin Blasdale • Borealis String Quartet The Boston Museum Trio • Antoine Bouchard • Bela Böszörményi-Nagy • Mischa Bouvier • Guy Bovet • David Breitman • Carter Brey • Hope Briggs • Denis Brott • Walter Brueggemann • Martin J.
