Looking Back and Looking Forward: CEO’s Annual Message Looking back on 2009 I can honestly say that it was a good year for the Abbe Museum. After several years of leadership transition and organizational changes, we set our sights for the future and its positive financial growth. New to the mix was the addition of two new staff members, Jason Brown (Public Affairs Manager) and myself, and a concerted effort to prioritize projects and galvanize support for the Museum’s budgetary needs. We conceived innovative exhibits and programs and created new budgetary and team-oriented strategies to reduce expenses. As we ended the year, the board, staff, and I all knew that we are now on a steady path of performance improvement and stewardship. Guiding us into the future is our new mission to inspire new learning about the Wabanaki Nations with every visit. This mission was created during a lengthy strategic planning process which resulted in a five-year plan and a financial forecast which erases our operating deficit in 18 months. We also developed a clear organizational charge. To strengthen the organization and to create an informed citizenry, the Abbe Museum, now and long into the future, will focus resources around two civic-minded goals. - Build a respectful and inclusive society. - Nurture creative thinking and expression to address societal needs. Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko Our strategies aim to create relationships between Mainers and Native populations, to integrate Wabanaki-related content with formal education, to create accessible entry points for multiple learning styles, and position the Abbe Museum as a highly regarded state and regional leader. We will continue sharing our “foundational content” – archaeology and Wabanaki history and traditions – with Abbe audiences but we will, more importantly, prevent disconnects of understanding. The spectrum of 12,000 years provides stories of family, adaptation, and survival that are important to share in any time period and can be understood anywhere in the world. As a 21st century museum, our audience’s lenses of understanding will broaden as we apply relevant and current information to our content development and delivery systems. One of the best examples of this new mission and plan in action is our 2010 major exhibition Headline News: Wabanaki Sovereignty in the 21st Century. Through the first person voices of Maine’s Native people juxtaposed with iconic objects from the Abbe collection, this ground breaking show highlights eight contemporary issues – identity, border rights, ash borer beetle, hunting and fishing rights, environmental management, gaming, and veterans - that embody the unique status of Wabanaki sovereignty. The staff, board, and I are enthusiastic about the Abbe’s future and we are grateful to our friends, volunteers, and supporters who have brought us to this point in the Abbe story. ABBE MUSEUM - 2009 Annual Report President’s Annual Message It is an honor to be serving my first term as President of the Abbe Board of Trustees. The past year has been an exciting time at our beloved Museum, marked by some new beginnings. Sandra K. Wilcox, Ph.D. Following a national search, your Board brought Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko to the Abbe as the new CEO. As you have learned already, Cinnamon is the consummate museum professional. There is consensus among the Board that in her short time at the helm she has shown extraordinary leadership and vision and has grasped the Abbe’s challenges and its potential. She conducted one-on-one interviews with current and former Board members and long-standing supporters to gain perspectives on institutional memories and to seek counsel on future directions for the Museum. Under her leadership, we have a new vibrant, clearly articulated mission statement that puts “inspiring new learning” at the fore. She has shown herself to be an effective manager, engaging a talented staff of individuals in teambuilding that has resulted in increased productivity and creativity. And she has shown her talent at working effectively and collaboratively with the Board. It is truly a pleasure to be partnering with her. The ground-breaking exhibit Headline News marks another departure for us. The Abbe has traditionally employed consultants to develop new exhibits. In contrast, Headline News is the imaginative product of our own remarkable staff, Raney Bench, Julia Clark and Jason Brown. The exhibit represents a serious collaboration with the Wabanki to tell the complex stories about Maine Native sovereignty issues. The curatorial staff visited all of the Tribes to collect their varied points of view and to explore the issues in their own words. With Cinnamon at the helm, the staff is developing more exhibition content and design with the double benefit of reducing costs and building staff competence and credibility. Finally, the Board is committed to a closer relationship with our Corporators. We plan to take advantage of your knowledge and experiences as well as your love for the Abbe by seeking your input as we move forward with a new 5-year Strategic Plan. A strategic plan guides an organization and provides benchmarks to assess progress. At the same time, it is a living, dynamic document that undergoes refinement and adjustment over its life. Your feedback and good counsel will help assure that we are enhancing the Abbe as a strong bond in the social and cultural fabric of the diverse communities we serve. 2009 Exhibitions 2009 Waponahki Student Art Show Twisted Paths: Contemporary Native American Artists Walking in Two Worlds Power of Place: Views of Maine by John Potter and Stephanie Francis Look Twice: The Waponahki in Image and Verse Layers of Time: Archeology at the Abbe Museum Arthur and Nita Wood Artifacts Collection Objects of Our Affection North by Northeast: Wabanaki, Akwesasne Mohawk and Tuscarora Traditional Arts October 9, 2008 - August 31, 2009

Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko

Our strategies aim to create relationships between Mainers and Native populations, to integrate Wabanaki-related content with formal education, to create accessible entry points for multiple learning styles, and position the Abbe Museum as a highly regarded state and regional leader.

In 2009, the Abbe Museum continued to experience similar financial challenges to what it has faced over the last few years. Overall economic conditions, along with turnover in executive leadership , resulted in an operating deficit of close to $387,000 for the year.

These results mask a number of positive developments. Revenues from all sources except investments were up 2%, while expenses were down 8%. The combination of these improvements resulted in a deficit reduction of over $100,000.

On another positive note, funds managed by Boston Private Bank rebounded to $1.35 million at the end of 2009, up from 2008 lows of under $900,000.

Excluding depreciation and investment management fees, 2009 operating expenses were $768,000; 2008 operating expenses were $839,000.

Blueberry basket, ash and sweet grass, Molly Neptune Parker, 2009
