THE FARM BY THE GREAT SOUTHERN OCEANSouthern Ocean Mariculture (SOM) was

established in 1996 on 10 hectares of a

140-hectare ocean front property near

Port Fairy. The farm was founded by a

group of investors from the local abalone

diving industry who have fished these

waters for years. The site is remote from major population

centres and draws its water from the oceanic waters just

offshore of our small protected bay. Being directly from the

Great Southern Ocean SOM gets stable annual water

temperatures enabling us to produce abalone of a consistent

quality all year round.

THE UNIQUE GREEN TIGER ABALONEThe farm is an aquaculture facility capable of producing up to 120

tonnes per annum of cocktail sized abalone ranging from 70 to

200gm live weight.

The abalone we cultivate is a hybrid of two of Australia’s best known

species, Green Lip abalone and Black Lip abalone and provides our

customers with a unique dining experience.

We named it Green Tiger as it has a green shell and tiger stripe

feature on the foot. It has natural pearl white flesh colour, sweet

subtle flavour and succulent texture.

HOW WE GROW GREEN TIGER ABALONEEach abalone takes between 2 to 4 years to

grow to commercial size depending on the size

required by the customer. We produce our

abalone from stock bred on the farm. At five

days old they are put into nursery tanks where

they graze on natural algae, facilitating rapid

growth. At about six months old we move the

abalone juveniles into weaning tanks and after a further year we

move them into our final growing tanks. At each stage of the

process abalone are graded and counted to ensure optimum

growing conditions.

All of our staff are well trained and have extensive knowledge of

abalone cultivation. We employ a sophisticated tank management

system to ensure the best results for abalone growth.

青邊虎鮑屬夜行生物生活在低光環境，

在海洋裡它們棲息在暗礁，利用海藻

和岩石的保護躲過它們的天敵。在養

殖場內，我們使用罩棚阻斷光源來維

持黑暗的環境以激發鮑魚成長。高流量的潔淨海水日夜不段的注入用

以沖刷池內的廢物以確保鮑魚有著最佳的成長環境。給予鮑魚特製調

配的餵食，以滿足在成長的各個階段所需的蛋白質。

Ye�� r��n� ������ THE FARMING ENVIRONMENT OF GREEN TIGER ABALONEGreen Tiger Abalone are nocturnal and live in a

low light environment. In the wild their habitat

is the reef where they find protection from

predators under seaweed and rocks. On the

farm we simulate their growing conditions by

maintaining our tanks in the dark.

Our tanks have high flows of fresh seawater flowing though

them day and night which flush out any waste and maintain an

optimum growing environment.

The abalone are given specially formulated feed that meets their

protein requirements at all stages of their life cycle.

OUR PROCESSOR - SOUTHERN CANNINGSOM has a close working relationship with Southern Canning in Portland, Victoria. This processor with exporter

number EX12 has been producing our canned and vacuum packed abalone for many years and knows that SOM

produces a really consistent high quality abalone. Southern Canning is known in the market for their technical

skills and consistency of product quality. Our entire abalone product range is produced by EX12 and processed in

AQIS approved facilities ensuring high standards of product safety.
