    It has been an honor and a privilege serving as the President o the AAS this past year. Te succgrowth o the society during this time would not have been possible without the help o the AASand Executive Council. Dr. Melina Kibbe has continued to do an outstanding job in her second yRecorder. She and her SUS counterpart, Dr. Dev Desai, have devoted an enormous amount o time ort in ensuring that this years Academic Surgical Congress (ASC) will be a success. Over the they have revamped the abstract submission website, assembled an excellent program, and tacklother challenges. As a result, this years ASC boasts record-breaking numbers in terms o submittedto the meeting and manuscripts to the Journal o Surgical Research.Dr. Lillian Kao is in her ras Secretary, and she has worked closely with the committees to promote both the national Fall and the international courses. She is collaborating with a past President,Dr. Herb Chen , and a numcouncil members to develop a book to be distributed with these courses on Success in Academic Dr. Tim Pa lik is the current reasurer, and he and his deputy reasurers Drs. Evan Nadler anN omeh have done an outstanding job in maintaining the nancial health o the AAS. Te nancesociety are important in supporting our mission o ostering and developing young academic surgeonsresearch scholarships and travel awards, among other initiatives. Last but not least, I know that the Acontinue to thrive under the guidance o President-ElectDr. Scott Lemaire . He did a spectacular job durtenure as Secretary, and I look orward to seeing the AAS continue to grow in the next ew years.

    Te AAS Executive Council has also done an amazing job thispast year.Drs. Carlton Barnett and Allan Ts ng , co-chairso the Global A airs Committee, have developed itineraries

    or our international visitors, who will be introduced inthis newsletter. Please make sure to make our visitors eel

    welcome! Additionally, the Global A airs Committee hashelped to coordinate the existing international coursesand is developing additional courses in new locations. Tefall c , l h l Wa h d.c., w ala huge success. Tese courses were the result o the hard

    work o Dr. Steve Goldin and the Education Committee,co-chaired by Drs. David Foley and Kent Choi , and theLeadership Committee, co-chaired by Drs. Faiz Bhora andHerb Zeh . Although there are too many people to mentionindividually, I would like to acknowledge the hard work o all o the committee chairs and members, the councilors,and the representatives o the AAS. Tey have made the jobo being President easier and more pleasurable.

    Te 6th Annual ASC in Huntington Beach, Cali ornia, is just around the corner. Te program is jam-pa with presentations, plenary sessions, panels, and hot topic sessions. In addition, the Joint Social Recepother social activities promise to be even more un than ever and are a great way to network with coT AAs A al B m w ll b h l a 5:30 p W a , f b ahal o the election process, or committee members and o cers, will be held during this time. Yoimportant, so please plan to attend!

    Te overall nancial health o the AAS remains strong. Over the past year, we have been working maintain the nances o our organization and build on our past successes.

    During the past year, we have been working hard to duplicate the nancial success o last yearsyou know, the ASC meeting is the premier meeting o academic surgeons and is the main annu

    or our organization. o support this meeting and to ensure its nancial solvency, we rely heregistration ees, unrestricted educational grants, as well as industry commercial support. As entire AAS team has been working non-stop to submit grant applications and solicit commercial

    or this years upcoming meeting. Similar to other organizations, however, the AAS has beguntoward a more robust confict o interest policy that may in the uture change how industry intera

    As the reasurer, I will continue to work hard to ensure the nancial success o the ASC meetimaintaining the highest ethical standards in the AAS interactions with our industry partners.

    meeting such as awards or the Best Overal l Abstract, Outstanding Resident Research Award, OutMedical Student Award, and Best Overall Manuscript Award among others. Each award is ass

    with a cash prize that can help support the recipients research or travel costs during this time wheindividuals have less access to institutional unds. In total, unds rom the AAS reasury sup$5000 -a a Awa . i a h awa ha a ameeting, unds rom the AAS reasury and AAS Foundation are used to support the AAS FoResearch Fellowship Award.
