SESSION DESCRIPTIONSAAPL is dedicated to educating its members and having relevant designations is one way to increase your credibility, knowledge, and success.

KEYNOTE | Housing Outlook 2016: A Washington View

In his keynote address, The Collingwood Group Chairman Tim Rood, will discuss the state of the US housing finance industry. His presentation will include an update on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac today, new entrants, and an analysis of the key players in Washington, their priorities, and considerations for reform in 2016 and beyond.

Building a Timeless Brand for Your Business

When it comes to your company one of the most important things that you deal with is your Brand. This is also one of the most over used words in the corporate work place today. It has become a catch phrase. Your brand is what your customer perceives you to be when they walk away from an experience with you. Yes it is your logo and aesthetics, but even more than that it is the experience of the customer. This session will deal with how to build and maintain a brand correctly.

Don’t Let the Market Cycle Dictate Your Life Cycle

The rhythm of cyclical fluctuations in the economy has followed similar patterns since the dawn of America. As a result, the approaches and strategies used to thrive during lean economic times has been relegated to those that have become students of history; as lenders and investors performance across asset categories typically rotates in line with different phases of each cycle. Critical facts about our economic history and key indicators that have followed the trends of each cycle will dictate your chances of withstanding the next storm.

5 Winning Strategies to Dominate Your Next Deal

Join Abhi Golhar & Walt Higgins II as they discuss the five steps to dominate real estate deals plus how you can build a successful real estate team. Stick around to hear real life examples of a new construction deal and lot development before they open up to answer your questions.

Raising and Deploying Capital Efficiently Nationwide

Discussion on the various securities regulations that lenders must be aware of when raising capital from investors to fund loans; and in buying, selling trust deed investments. How to fund loans efficiently in all 50 states using investor capital.

Funding Commercial & Residential Hard Money Foreclosures

Aside from finding the right property, one of the most difficult aspects of purchasing commercial and residential foreclosures is finding financing. In this panel, top lenders from around the country will delve into what funding options are available for foreclosures and discuss what trends are affecting the foreclosure market and how you can use those trends to your advantage.

How to Avoid the 21 Mistakes Most Borrowers Make When Working with Hard Money Lenders

Smooth Processes, Fast Transactions and a Problem-Free Experience: Most seasoned investors understand that financing is one of the most crucial aspects of investing, and while some investors are exclusively cash buyers, most investors will want or need to seek out a loan at some point. Hard money lenders fill a void in the lending business and make loans to investors that many other financial institutions won’t make, but it’s critical for real estate investors to know how to avoid the mistakes that most borrowers make when working with hard money lenders.

Re-Thinking Mortgage with Technology

Today’s post-recessionary mortgage market is begging for technological innovation. Traditional banks don’t have the incentive nor flexibility to rise to the challenge. Millennials, the next tidal wave of borrowers, are fed up with the status quo. Nearly half are counting on tech start-ups to overhaul the way banks work and 73%

Page 29: AAPL's 6th Annual Conference Program

29

would be more excited about a new offering in financial services from Google, Amazon, Apple, PayPal or Square than from their own nationwide bank. They are embracing a financial services overhaul by turning to online marketplace lenders to refinance their credit cards, student and small business loans. The last domino is about to fall: home loans. LendingHome has created a tech-first mortgage marketplace to offer borrowers, brokers and lenders a transparent, speedy and fair-priced place to do business. Join LendingHome’s Founding Partner and Head of Business Development as we take a glimpse into the future of mortgage.

Championing Ethics: Industry Viewpoint

The subject of ethics holds center stage in every facet of the private lending finance chain. The American Association of Private Lenders’ Ethics Advisory Committee will explore the subjective nature of ethics, values and morals; along with how they affect our industry. During this panel discussion you will discover common predatory lending practices and their harmful effects on brokers, lenders, and clients, plus learn more about the AAPL Code of Ethics and the responsibilities and expectations of AAPL members.

The 13 Insurance Myths for the Real Estate Investor

During the presentation Shawn will cover common misconceptions about insuring your investment properties with a Homeowners Policy, as well as some of the major differences between Personal and Commercial Lability, and why “Self-Insurance” is too risky. He will also cover why cheaper is not always better for insurance, and why all policies are not created equal.

Crowdfunded Lending: Fad or Future?

Alternate lending platforms - whether for real estate, start-ups, or any other aspect of the economy - don’t appear to be going away anytime soon. We’re seeing it with more accessible, consumer-focused platforms, as well as with the most sophisticated of real estate financing. Innovation in the finance sector hit a major milestone with the passage of the JOBS Act in 2012. It has been three years since it was written into law, and two years since the SEC made a historic decision to enact Title II with Reg D 506(c), which essentially opened up new channels of communication and solicitation around private placements. At that time, a few visionary entrepreneurs launched digital platforms called ‘crowdfunding real estate portals,’ aimed at providing access to capital for real estate financing. Debt financing, private lending and hard money lending have emerged as the largest categories and continue to grow in volume. However, real estate is an industry as old as time, while crowdfunded lending, with only a few years in existence, is only in its infancy. Will this technology-enabled, in-the-cloud model turn out to be a fad, or is it, as many proponents argue, the future?

How to Upscale Your Operation

The private lending industry has changed dramatically just in the last few years. Even the name ‘Hard Money Lending’ is a misnomer for much of the volume that is originated today can be institutional in nature, if certain guidelines are adhered to and the loans are packaged appropriately. Like their unsecured counterparts, collateralized loans originated by private lenders are now coveted by the world’s largest financial institutions. In this transformational workshop, Roc will discuss methods and strategies for private lenders to capitalize on this paradigm shift. Learn about how you can take your lending business to the next level by working with institutional investors. Key topics will include underwriting framework, servicing, valuation methods, and capital raising.

Diversify your Investment Portfolio: Learn How to Make Money 3 Ways with One Investment Vehicle

Learn how you can self-direct your IRA into a TRULY self-directed IRA in which you can purchase assets such as real estate, stocks, and bonds. You’re not limited to letting your money sit in your retirement fund, take control and invest in your future.

How to Leverage your Lending Dollars

Unlike traditional savings that offer you nearly zero percent interest and only allow your money to be used in one place at a time, this financial tool allows you to make money like the financial institutions do by collateralizing your cash AND continuing to earn interest while you use other people’s money.

Learn how to make a minor adjustment in the way you think about and treat your cash and make a major impact in the bottom line of your business.

The Perception of Entrepreneurial Genius: Unlocking a Seat at the Table

While the percentage of women at the top of major corporations have stalled for years, the number of women starting, owning and growing their own businesses is rising. One national study found that the number of women-owned businesses rose 68 percent over the past 20 years, compared to an overall growth rate of just 47 percent for all businesses. Organizations that are the most inclusive of women in top management achieve 35 percent higher return on equity and 34 percent better total return to shareholders versus their peers. Entrepreneurship lets women lead the way they want. Learn from successful female entrepreneurs how to face and overcome challenges in a “man’s” world.

Crowdfunding and Marketplace Lending: A New Source of Capital

The crowdfunding and marketplace lending industries continue to grow at an exponential rate. It’s becoming increasingly important for private lenders to better understand how these companies fit into their ecosystem. There are nuanced differences between crowdfunding and marketplace lending, but both platforms have the potential to grow a private lenders’ footprint and more efficiently run their operations. This session will address the differences between crowdfunding and marketplace lending, the benefits provided to private lenders that participate on crowdfunding and/or marketplace lending sites, whether or not these companies are here to stay and, finally, how to evaluate each platform to ensure you’re partnering with the right team.

Bank Financing for Private Real Estate “Fix and Flip” Lenders

How do bank lenders underwrite warehouse loans to private real estate lenders? Regional versus national focus? Recourse versus non-recourse structure? Does it matter if you are backed by family office/high net worth individuals versus institutional investors? Does it help to raise equity capital when the private lender has a letter of intent (“LOI”) for bank financing? This presentation will help private real estate lenders seeking to maximize their returns on equity and to ensure timely funding of their loans.

Make your Lending Dollars Do Triple Duty

Stop tying up your cash in low paying savings accounts. Learn about an asset that earns you money even as you borrow against it for your real estate investments.

This simple, but sophisticated vehicle acts like money in the bank. But it does much more for you. It frees you from needing to prove your net worth or fill out another credit form, eliminates the need for a public bank, protects your money from creditors, and pays you interest—even on the money you borrow against!

Bankers and the ultra-rich have been using this asset for generations. Rebecca Rice and Jim Beam explain how the Living Benefits of whole life insurance can be used to simplify your investing and increase your wealth. They teach you how thousands of others are using it to purchase real estate and other business assets privately and more profitably. This works for investors of any wealth level.

Take advantage of compounding to increase the ROI of your investment. With this very specific kind of life insurance you can use the same money to earn interest, borrow easily and quickly—while still growing the cash in your insurance policy, tax-free retirement income, and build substantial death benefits.
