AALTOENTREPRENEURSHIPSOCIETY

Aalto Entrepreneurship Society is a community-driven organization founded in fall 2008.

We help students and researchers create world-changing startups from Finland and Northern Europe.

Our events connect you with new ideas, team members, experienced mentors as well as funding.

The Garage started early 2010 with grassroots initiatives made by a group of students and entrepreneurs from Aalto Entrepreneurship Society who wanted to foster the entrepreneurship culture and help create great startups.

The Garage ‘s 700sq meter free working space has everything you need to build a startup: Wifi internet, kitchen, coffee machine, copy machine, meeting rooms, hotdesks, big open auditorium and great people!

About...

3

Aaltoes began 2010 in a positive conundrum. On one hand, the founding team from 2009 had achieved a lot and would go on to be an integral part of our group from thereon as well, with Kristo leading the way setting up the Aalto Venture Garage. Aaltoes was visible, relatively well-known, and building momentum in the drive to spark more and more entrepreneurial spirit amongst Aalto University’s students and researchers.

On the other hand, however, Aaltoes was also lost whilst being completely on-track. We didn’t know what we’d end up doing during the year, but we all had the feeling that we had to do a lot and all the time. The team spent months working hard on events and concepts that didn’t always end up fulfilling expectations, but all the while we began to get a clearer picture of what Aaltoes was and is. We found perfect gems, just waiting to be honed, such as the Summer of Startups and a renewed and refreshed trip to Silicon Valley, not to mention having one of our team members set up StartupDigest Helsinki.

At the end of the year, everyone can probably be pleased with our achievements. Countless new teams have been formed, new companies have been founded, and innovative thinking is clearly seeping deeper into the general mindset of all the people around us. With the amount our active members have been interviewed, quoted, and called upon as guests in several different forums, I’d say 2010 was the year Aaltoes really made itself known.

Now the team for 2011, with the help of all those of us who have been around longer, need to start filling even bigger promises brought about by the publicity and image Aaltoes has made for itself. I have full and complete trust that under the leadership of Mikko Kuusi, whom I brought onboard already during the Spring of 2010, the Aaltoes team will manage to get even closer to the stars that we are all reaching for.

For everyone involved during 2010 - thank you.

- Jens Sørensen, Chairman 2010

First Open Mic -event19th of January

The first Aaltoes event for the 2010 was a casual networking evening and an opportunity for sharing ideas: Aaltoes Open Mic. The idea was to have short 2 minute speeches and then open discussions after them. The topics could be almost anything from problems you discovered in the event to well-prepared business plans as the goal was to generate new teams for Aaltoes Pitching Evenings.

The event took place at Helsinki downtown KY-Building and was a great success with about 40 people attending. For many of them this was their first Aaltoes event and many of them later became active team members.

New board & team1st of January

Right before the christmas holidays, the new board was elected.

Tuli Talk /w Hannu Verkasalo28th of January

This was the first of the Aaltoes Tuli Talk series, a monthly event dedicated to hearing the stories of entrepreneurs with a research background. We were privileged to host Hannu Verkasalo, serial entrepreneur and founder at Zokem Ltd, who spoke about his experiences as an entrepreneur, his companies and research background.

There were good audience of 50 young students and researchers and after the event people stayed for a good while to talk, discuss and exchange ideas, so this definately set up a good start for the other upcoming events.

Aaltoes Fair2nd of February

This was the second time we organized the Aaltoes Fair in cooperation with the HSE MBA Alumni Association. At the Aalto Design Factory about 30 startups presented themselves to the diverse audience in a fair-like setting. The careful and comprehensive planning & execution produced great results: many of the over 300 delegates and startups nominated the Fair as one of the best Aaltoes events ever.

Page 12: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

12

Aaltoes Open Mic4th of February

Our second Open Mic was held at the Aalto school of Art and Design. The variety of ideas presented were a refreshing reminder of the purely fantastic thought processes that fill the heads of our Arts and Design students. With five different ideas presented, no member of the audience left the event without having learned something new.

Aaltoes Open Mic11th of February

Third and last Open Mic for the spring was held at our very own Aalto Venture Garage. Again, lively discussions and new people visiting the VG, so clearly the goals were met.

Aaltoes Pitching17th of February

The first Pitching Competition for the year. As usually, we saw some very good pitches and business ideas, some of which we would be hearing a lot more later on. The winner was Lauri from Aaltoes with an idea of open and collaborative tool to help people keep their new years promises. Other great ones were eg. LucSens and Finderbase, just to name a few.

Page 13: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

13

Aaltoes visit to WOT25th of February

We visited a finnish startup called Web of Trust, who develope a community-based tool to boost trust on the web. As always, it was inspiring and a great learning experience to hear a unique story of a successful startup. Thanks!

Tuli Talk /w Tuomo von Lerber4th of March

As a part of the Tuli Talk -series, Tuomo von Lerber, the CEO of Luxdyne Ltd., told us his story of a researcher turned into a business person. Without any slides or other material, Tuomo was probably one of the best speakers we’ve ever had at the Garage, so good job!

Late Night /w Aaltoes5th of March

What a night! Great speakers, great atmosphere, great venue (after the lightman worked his magic) and great people! The event continued until… late, when we had to pack up our awesome light and audio systems, much to the dismay of the crowd still hanging out.

Page 14: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

14

Aaltoes Startup Talkoot13th-14th of March

The Design Factory was the place to be on the weekend, when the Aaltoes volunteers and startups gathered there to work on each others project in a true Talkoot-spirit.

On Sunday we held a pitching competition which was won by LucSens. You can read more about them at the Startups-section

Tuli Talk /w David Brown25th of March

David Brown, Founder and CEO of Canatu told the story of a young researcher working hard in his lab pumping out paper after paper on his research until one day, everything changed when this particular researcher took the plunge and decided to take his research onto the next level, on to the business level that is.

Trip to MIT GSW24th-26th of March

Five Aaltoes team members and their startups went to Iceland for the MIT GSW conference. This was a good opportunity the new team to develope more international networks and see how the things are done elsewhere.

Fun fact: the event was held just two days after the Ash Crisis -mountain had had it’s first, tinier eruption.

Bootcamp #11st -30th of April

The first Bootcamp ever at the Aalto Venture Garage. Inspired by programs like Y-Combinator, the crew from Aaltovg selected ten best teams to be coached and mentored over the few weeks in order to create the next 100M+ success story.

Open Mic /w Media Biz Lab19th of April

This time the Open Mic was co-hosted by people from the new minor program in Aalto: the Media Biz Lab. The emphasis was on mobile applications and again the discussions were great and we’re sure that new ideas emerged from the event. One concrete project started was the (nowdays unfortunately more or less dead) Venture Finland: a wikiplatform and a source for entrepreneurial information.

Aaltoes Talk /w Siilasmaa, Parkkinen, Rosendahl & Hjelt14th of April

One of the goals for the team this year was to organize at least a couple of major Talk-events during the year and this definately was one. Over 150 students and others gathered to the school of Economics to listen to these four experienced entrepreneurs sharing their experiences on what it takes to create successful startup.

Page 16: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

16

Bootcamp keynote w/ Mårten Mickos20th of April

Mårten Mickos stopped by the garage to speak about Open source to the BootCamp teams. The BootCamp teams took this opportunity to pitch in front of the former CEO of MySQL AB. Mickos’s most important tips to the young startups was to really know yourself before embarking on the entrepreneur’s journey.

Tuli Talk /w Hipui26th of April

The Tuli Talk -series continued with Hipui, the developers of the next generation of mobile experience. The Hipui -folks also ended up being one of the winners of the Bootcamp #1. Congrats!

Vappu Reception30th of April

We gathered up a large group at the Aalto Venture Garage to officially open the Kitchen and celebrate Vappu. Good food, great people, fun atmosphere: the perfect mix for a pre-Vappu party. Hopefully this will start up a traditions for many years to come.

Bootcamp Demo Day #15th of May

This was the final day for the Bootcamp #1, where all the teams presented their achievements and progress during the past few weeks. After a fair-like setting there was a pitching competition, after which the judges chose three winners: Widsen, Hipui and Thermophotonic Heat Pump.

Aaltoes Visit to Fruugo6th of May

As the last (but definately not least) activity for the spring, we arranged a visit to Fruugo, one of the most famous startup from Finland. We learned a lot about the company's history and had a great discussion about the critical decisions startups might have to make early on.

Summer of StartupsJuly and August

The first Summer of Startups -program ever! Together with awesome folks from Hanken's and Helsinki University's Entrepreneurship Societies we organized an alternative summer jobs for entrepreneurial students. Read more from page 21.

ES Summit10th of August

For the first time, the more or less newly emerged Entrepreneurship Societies from all over the Finland gathered under the same roof to discuss about the challenges they're facing and their future plans. The event was hosted by Aaltovg and lots of new plans were made, such as the decision to do the Failday nation-wide, just to mention one. Let's hope this'll become at least an annual tradition!

SoS pitching competition27th of August

The selection process for the SoS included a pitching competition as a final round, so right before Mid Summer about 70 gathered to pitch and hear others. The pitches were good and after everlasting consideration the judges ended up choosing ten best teams. What a way to start Mid Summer!

Trip to the Baltics27th-31st of August

It's important to know your neighbours, so a small team from Aaltoes and Aaltovg took a ferry to Estonia and continued through Baltics to meet local entrepreneurs and communities. One goal was to make the upcoming Bootcamp #2 better known, which was definately met. Another highlight might be attending the Garage48 at Tartu, which resulted having another one at Helsinki in Jan 2011.

Page 19: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

19

Bootcamp #211th-29th of SptemberFor the second Bootcamp of the year, the Garage team had made some changes and this time the schedule was much more intense. Still the core idea was the same: get the best teams from the Baltics to the Garage and accelerate them into a 100M+ success stories.

Open mic on Ubicom13th of September

Another Open Mic -event, this time with emphasis on Ubiquitous Computing. Not all of the attendees knew what ubicom actually means, but I think most of us learned something new.

Late Night /w Aaltoes8th of October

To boost the recruitment of the Aaltoes team and especially the board for next year, we hosted our second Aaltoes Late Night: a casual and very laid-back evening with couple of short speeches and a chance to mingle and meet other likeminded people.

Page 20: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

20

1st Fail Day Celebration13th of October

This was the first Finnish Fail Day, organized by local ES's and celebrated simultaneously at Espoo, Turku and Tampere. The goal of the day was the change people's perceptions and Finnish culture about failure and encourage risk taking.

We had invited a few speakers to talk to Aaltovg and enjoyed the delicious and bitter sweet punch while sharing stories about our personal failures.

Aaltoes Insight14th of October

The tagline for the Aaltoes Insight was "Peak into the future". We invited senior executives from IBM, Stora Enso and KONE to present problems their industries would be facing in the next then years and thus good ideas to build startups on. The event attracted a good crowd of about 100 attendees and the discussions were lively.

Trip to Silicon Valley21st of October

Our second trip to Silicon Valley started officially on the 21st of October, even though most of us had arrived a day or two earlier. During the week we got to know about the local ecosystem, each other and have a good time.

Info & Recruitment evening18th of November

This was an informal evening to provide information for interested people on what it's like to be involved with the Aaltoes board and/or team. Many people attended and latest then we knew, that year 2011 would be even better than this one!

Aaltoes Talk /w Niklas Zennström1st of December

Niklas Zennström and Atomico Ventures were coming to Helsinki as a part of their roadshow around Europe, so we tapped into an opportunity and invited him to talk to Aalto Venture Garage. As the hype of having the founder of Skype and Kazaa to talk started to build, this ended up being the biggest Aaltoes event with over 270 attendees.

Before the event we held a pitching competition with a number one prize being an invitation to a private afterparty hosted by Atomico and 15 minutes of private skypetime with Niklas. The pitches were great and the winner was APE Payment.

Election of the board 201114th of December

Aalto Entrepreneurship Society selected its third board on Tuesday 14th of December at Aalto Venture Garage. The 5-member board, backed up by a wonderful team, will shape the Aaltoes activities during 2011. Needless to say, familiar faces will not disappear anywhere!

Summer of Startups

25

The beginning

The idea of a program like this had been out there already for quite a long time, but in the end it was put together in a very short time. The first meeting was held at the cafeteria of the Aalto School of Economics in late May, only six weeks before the kickoff.

Ville Simola from the Aaltoes board was chosen as program manager running the operations of the program full-time and Ramine Darabiha, the CEO of MySites was hired as the main coach. Lot of the preparations were also done during the program which made it an iterative program, just like we were preaching the start-ups to iterate their own businesses.

The program itself

The selection of the teams was done in two rounds and was heavily inspired by accelerators such as Y-combinator. First, we gathered online

applications where questions were asked about the idea, the team behind it and especially the team’s plan for the summer. As the result of heavy promotion over 60 good quality applications were received and 20 best teams were invited to a pitching competition. Despite of having it right before the mid-summer the event draw a lot of crowd to the Garage and eventually ten teams were selected by a jury consisting of organizers and coaches.

During the eight weeks, the teams from various backgrounds developed their products and business models to be presented in the Demo Day. About every other day we had speaker / coach to guide the teams in different topics ranging from productivity and agile development to financing and legal matters. The teams weren’t required to attend every session or even work at the Garage, but still many did and felt it really helpful as, there was always someone to ask for feedback and the atmosphere was very collaborative.

Summer of Startups was one of the new initiatives organized in 2010. Together with HankenES and HUES, we created an intensive, 8-week program for early-stage startup teams. Ultimately, a ten teams were chosen from a total of 60 applicants. During the summer, these teams got to work on their own startup idea, while getting a small seed funding of 1500 euros per team member.

Page 26: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

26

A lot of emphasis was put into pitching, as besides of it being important from the sales point of view, it’s also a good practise for clarifying the essential in one’s business. Almost every day was started with a 30 second elevator pitch from every team to the guest speaker and a lot of progress was made.

The startup BBQ’s

In addition to the official program, every Wednesday there was an event called Startup BBQ. The idea was to have an open and casual hangout with good food, few drinks and a startup from previous Aaltoes-events to share their story. Every team had one week when they were responsible for the arrangements, so the burden wasn’t too heavy for anyone and everyone enjoyed it.

The events were really popular and drew a lot of people to the Garage every week, the record being over 130. Besides having fun time and building the teamspirit, these were also good chances for the teams to get outsiders’ feedback and promote their startup.

The Demoday

The whole program culminated into the Demo Day, where the teams presented what they had done and how they had progressed during the past eight weeks. Many had working products and actually most had changed their ideas from the original. Both the teams and the organizers put a lot of effort to the event and it certainly was a high quality one.

The day consisted of two parts. The first was a Fair-like setting, where the teams were promoting themselves at stands and people could freely move around to get to know them. After this, the second part was a pitching competition where teams were evaluated on business potential, quality of the presentation and progress made during the program. Ultimately, three winners were chosen, so congrats to Arada Services, Living Canvas and Pamoja Innovations!

Impact and Visibility

One of the surprises was the amount of attention and media coverage we got in various newspapers and blogs such as ReadWriteWeb and Talouselämä. The inofficial communications team (Charlotta & Natalie) did an awesome job in handling the PR and spreading the word about the new grassroot-level initiative unlike any of the previous ones.

For a program that was started of in just a few weeks and with small amount of funding, the impact was enormous. Besides of the created buzz, ten teams were formed and 30 students got the taste of entrepreneurship. Now, after six months at least half of the teams have turned themselves into companies and a few of them have e.g. raised funding and/or have paying customers. Good stuff!

Bootcamp

Organized by the Aalto Venture Garage, Bootcamp provided startups the best opportunity to develop and test your idea with the most experienced coaches from Finland.

Page 30: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

30

Calling all Entrepreneurs to kick-start their companies!

Openness and collaboration were central themes at the Bootcamp as teams co-operated, worked on each other’s ideas and challenged those. Bootcamp wasn’t only a competition but a chance to share and grow your idea.Bootcamp was run by Garage’s Entrepreneur in Residence, Juha Ruohonen, a serial entrepreneur and ex-VC with years of experience.

Bootcamp Spring

The first bootcamp ever was a 5 week program. To get the startups inspired, the info lunch was kick-off by Ville Miettinen; Founder of Hybrid Graphics and Jussi Harvela, ex-ceo of Solid Information Technology. Both shared their entrepreneurial stories of their humble beginning of starving students startups to successful international exit.

Jussi who raised the most capital in Finland, wore his cowboy boots to show that he is ready for Bootcamp. Blood , sweat and tears are needed to start a company, he says, but participating in Bootcamp will enable teams to get on the right path.

Bootcamp Fall

After learning what worked and what didn’t at the first Bootcamp, the Garage team pivoted the program. They have added a larger network of coached and the schedule of the program was way more more intensive. Startups spent 2 week at the Garage where they lived and breath the startup life at Bootcamp. There was also more prizes allocated to the Bootcamp. The winning teams not only got office space, coaching, and funding but also a trip to Silicon Valley.

Tina Seeliq, president of Stanford Technology Venture Programs came all the way from San Francisco to kick off the second Bootcamp.

Bootcamp, run by the Aalto Venture Garage, was an intensive program run for the first time and two times during the 2010. It was free and basically the best opportunity to develop and test your idea with the most experienced coaches from Finland.

Page 31: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

31

Demoday

At the end of each Bootcamp, Aalto Venture Garage held its Demoday to present the latest batch of Bootcamp graduates. Coaches, investors, key stakeholders and the public joined together to see the startups that will rock Finland in the future.

Page 34: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

34

Aaltoes invaded Silicon Valley for a week in late October. Organised for the second time in a row, the journey consisted of a week of workshops, startups visits, company excursions, networking events and meetings with interesting people. Over 40 ambitious ambitious startups and local ES students decided to take part.

We had the opportunity to meet Stanford University students, incubators & co-working spaces, Silicon Valley veterans, VCs, lawyers, entrepreneurs and startups, as well as get to know Aaltoes and its members better. We met tons of famous faces: Steve Blank, Robert Scoble, 500startups with Enrique Allen, Y Combinator

with Harj Taggar, K9 Ventures with Manu Kumar, Venture Beat with Anthony Ha and Orrick Ventures with Jason Crain and a tons of other. We also visited all the bigger co-working spaces: KickLabs, I/O Ventures, Dogpatch Labs, PariSoma, SSE Labs and Hacker Dojo.

Aaltoes got covered by Robert Scoble, ReadWriteWeb, Silicon Angle and Startup Digest. The ad hoc Finland Night in PariSoma gathered some 100+ people together from the industry. Our sticker competition got out of hand and resulted in Garage sticker being photographed in Bucks Woodside coffee, Y-Combinator and PayPal conference sponsor wall, as well as with MC Hammer, Robert Scoble and Eric Schmidth.

Programme of the week

Even though many had meetings and schedules of their own, there was also some arranged program people could attend if they wanted - and many did!

Page 36: Aaltoes Yearbook 2010

36

Said about the trip:

“ I wanted to meet new people (metric: a stack of business cards, a couple of email threads, new facebook and linkedin contacts), find competitiors (we found atleast one direct competitor) and pitch (pitch atleast once a day)....and world peace (pending). “

“ Reaching out to see what Silicon Valley really holds. To build a good entreprenurial ecosystem, one really needs to see what it means at its best. I also got good contacts with bloggers, investors and lawyers and great feedback on our company. Our plans of reaching to the US market evolved greatly.”

“ We got a lot of feedback and suggestions for next steps. We also have decided to move at least me to the Valley. Also are talking to some potential investors “.

“I gained a lot of enthusiasm, new ideas and lessons on entrepreneurial life philosophy. I feel like I have grown as a person and that I’m now ready to take the next step as an entrepreneur.”

Board 2010

Many say that it’s the team that matters the most in a startup and it certainly holds true for the Aaltoes as well. Everyone gets responsibility from day one and taking initiative is encouraged. Besides of the mandatory (regulated by the law), official board, there’s a bunch of active team members who play key role in organizing many of the things we do. In practice there’s no difference or distinction between the board and the team.

The definition of the Aaltoes team is very vague and this list is not comprehensive by any means. So besides of the folks mentioned here, there are plenty of others as well. Thanks! You know who you are :)

Tuomo Kuikka

Tuomo was also part of the Aalto Entrepreneurship Society in the early days. He was known as the best person to carry chairs for events. He was so inspired by the startup community, that he decided to quit his job at the University Lab and join Kristo in forming the Aalto Venture Garage.

Tuomo’s was the handyman of the Garage. He could fix and build about anything. Tuomo has made the hostile industry hall into a real working space where entrepreneurs can call home.

In 2011, Tuomo was recruited by one of the Coaches and joined a startup called Valoya. Ps: The coffee machine misses you greatly.

Natalie Gaudet

Usually the only girl around the Garage, Natalie joined the trio when the Garage was 2 months old.

The startups in the Garage appreciate her as she has lend her voice many times for promotional videos and by bringing cake to town hall meetings.

In 2009, he co-founded and was the first chairman of the Aalto Entrepreneurship Society. In 2010, Kristo brought to life the Aalto Venture Garage.

Apart from running from meeting to meeting, Kristo is an excellent motivator and great leader for the young startups of the garage.Kristo is a power networker and knows who to ask to get the job done.
