Caution urged with use of holiday fi reworks
By Sandy MorrisThe start of a new
year is a time for cel-ebrating, and local emergency responders remind county residents to make sure that any fi reworks used in the festivities are handled safely and legally.
Dry conditions and high winds sparked the county commissioners to reinstate the county burn ban at their regu-lar meeting on Monday, Dec. 14.
Even when a burn ban is not in effect, the use of fi reworks is never allowed inside the city limits of either Albany or Moran. The use of fireworks on county roads or from any public roadway in Texas is also prohibited.
In the past, Shack-elford County has put very specifi c restrictions banning certain aerial fireworks within the county when there are especially dangerous fi re conditions.
While this specifi cally worded restriction was not passed by commis-sioners this year, county officials hope that all citizens of Shackelford County will be mindful of the wildfi re conditions and take care with any fi reworks.
As of Dec. 20, Shack-elford County was at a moderate risk of wild-fi res, according to the Texas A&M Forest Ser-vice.
Rogers recognized♦ Longtime Alzheimer’s worker earns 2020 award
By Sandy MorrisThe annual Walk to End
Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest fundraiser for Al-zheimer’s care, support, and research.
Beverly Rogers who heads up “Team Albany” was recently recognized in several categories for her fundraising efforts in the Abilene Regional District of the North Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Rogers fi rst became in-volved in the organization in 2002 after providing in-home care for a patient suffering from dementia.
Over the past 18 years, Rogers has participated in the walk, with every walk in memory of Helen Lieb.
Individually, Rogers was named as a 2020 Elite Grand Champion fund-raiser for her commitment to fundraising in the fi ght against the disease.
She was also recognized as the top 2020 individual fundraiser in the Abilene district, raising $5,531.
“The town has always been so supportive every-time I have participated in this event,” said Rogers.
While there have been years when she raised more money, this year was especially surprising.
“I had no idea what to expect with us being in the middle of a pandemic,” said Rogers. “The town came through better than I could have ever imagined.”
The teams in the 14-county Abilene district raised $103,000 this year.
Team Albany was named as a “Top 3 Team: Friends and Family Cat-egory” for 2020.
The group also received a certifi cate of Honorable Mention for Best Team Event, 2020 for their Clas-sic Cars Cruise Night.
When asked to name the members of Team Albany, Rogers said she and Randy Hayes work on the fundraiser, but she considers the entire town as team members because of their support.
“Everybody in Albany supports us in some way,” said Rogers. “Because of that, I call every person in town a team member.”
