For his primary school education, he attended the highly respected Hippomere Road Primary School, in Clare Estate. From Hippomere school he went Essendene Road School. There he met Sri Sukrajji Chotai as the principal of the school. He later met Sri Sukrajji Chotai at the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha – South Africa where he was the President of this august organisation.

The 1940’s Sri Sewpersadji’s family and many others decided to part from their place of birth and venture into greener pastures. His family bought a wood and iron building in Jacobs Road, Happy Valley, Wentworth and decided to settle there. This was short lived. Late 1950’s they were affected by the promulgation of the infamous Group Areas Act and had to move to Isipingo Beach further south of Wentworth.

While in Happy Valley he met Pandit Dookie Maharaj who was the district priest and taught Hindi at his home. Sri Sewpersadji attended his classes with a view to improve his knowledge of Hindi. In 1950’s he excelled in his class. His enthusiasm and passion for the language prompted him to start teaching Hindi at his home in Jacobs Road. It was during these golden years of his career as Hindi teacher, he met Pandit Nardevji Vedalankar from Gujarat, India who for two years was already in the country teaching Hindi, Gujerati and Vedic Sidhanta and Hinduism. at various venues. Sewpersadji found the ideal person in Panditji and enrolled for Hindi lessons under his tutorship. In 1971 he completed his Kovid studies through the Rashtrabasha Prachar Samiti, Wardha, India. He fondly remembers, often travelling to Panditji’s flat in Cross Street, Durban for extra lessons, hence became a close friend to Panditji’s family.  Whilst being with Panditji, he started Bharat Hindi Patshala in Jacobs Road, Clairwood. In 1954, he enrolled his first group of students to write the Wardha Hindi examinations. A newspaper cutting from1954 below reflects the results of several other schools including Bharat Hindi Patshala - Jacobs where Pandit Piyreelall Rughbeerji’s name also prominently appears.

After almost twelve years of living in Jacobs Road and conducting Hindi Classes, the Sewpersad family moved to Isipingo Beach. There he hired the services of Guruji Deepnarayan Rampersad Choudhree of Clairwood to teach Hindi at the Isipingo Beach Primary School. Through his passion for Hindi, he had Guruji Deepnarayan Choudhree on his company, General Cabinet Work’s payroll. He ensured that Guruji Deepnarayn Rampersad was financially taken care of. Prior to Guruji Deepnarayn Choudhree, for four years, Sri Sewpersadji also thought Hindi at the school. After Guruji’s retirement, Pandit Piyareelallji Rughbeer taught for a while and thereafter the teaching of Hindi was taken over by Pta Shardarani Philip.

Religiously, Sri Sewpersadji and his family are Vedic followers and subscribe to the principles of Arya Samaj. They are beholden to Pandit Nardevji Vedalankar who made an indelible impression on their family to

practice and live the life of an Arya Samaji. Through Panditji’s influence they started the Isipingo Beach Arya Samaj in a leased building. Here they held their weekly sathsanghs and evening Hindi Classes. Again, a big shift, the children of the families had to begin leaving their home for better work opportunities, thus disrupting the way of life led in Isipingo Beach. Sri Sewpersadji is living with his children in Gauteng, still very much involved in Arya Samaj and promoting the study of Hindi. One must acknowledge that Sri Sewpersad Gunpath, his younger brother, Lutchman Gunpath and the Piyareelall Rughbeer families kept the torch of Hindi shining in Isipingo Beach. Thank you to all of them.
