Alaska Peninsula – Dog Salmon River Lodge Dee Deoudes flew to the main camp to open up, check the buildings and mow the runway. On September 10th, Chris Moore the camp manager and Jack Egan the chef flew directly to Pilot Point on a King Air Flight with Dena'ina Air Taxi with 2800 #'s of food and supplies. Dee in his PA-12, met the plane and flew 5 loads into the main camp. Now he had more help to finish mowing the runway. On September 11th, we took another King Air Flight to Pilot Point, with another 2800 #'s of supplies and guides. Dee and Rick Reynolds flew us into base camp, once the weather cleared. The weaterports were set up and supplies were stored. John Offenburger, the first moose and wolf hunter arrived on September 13th, to start hunting on the 14th. Sheldon Snyder and Terry Stegall arrived to hunt moose and wolves on September 15th. Rick hauled more loads of food and freight in his Cessna 180. Sheldon took a 62" bull on the 18th at 4:30pm from the main camp. The meat, horns and cape were packed 1/2 mile back to the meat house. We put a trail camera on the moose bones and gut pile and got pictures of 2 bears, 2 wolves and a wolverine eating the scraps. October 2nd Riley Pitts and Rob Wing arrived with 2 more super cubs, to fly for the bear season. Bear guides and clients arrived and we flew them to spike camps, for the season opener of October 7th. Mac Varner was back on another bow hunt and took his bear on Ocotber 8th. John Offenburger also took his bear on the 8th. Troy Dall connected on the 9th. Darrell Shea tooka 9' 7" bear on the 11th. Eliseo Talamantes III, hunting with his 89 year old father-in-law Bruce Barker, took one of the largest bow kill bears we have ever taken, at 7 yards, on the 13th. The bear squared 10' 6" and had a 28 3/16" skull. Mike Romanowski took another 10' 4" monster on the 14th with a 28 10/16" skull. Dave Duncan took his 9' 6" also on the 14th. Our 9 hunters took 7 bears, all males. We have continued to improve the Dog Salmon River Lodge, and it remains one of the only lodges in Alaska where you can walk from camp and shoot a 60" moose or a 10' brown bear and sleep in cabins with heaters and electric lights. At the lodge we have a main cabin, 2 client cabins, a guide's bunkhouse, shower house, storage building and a meat and skinning shed/shop and 2 weatherports. We also have a satellite phone service at the lodge and each spike camp. Fishing is always great in the fall with Silver Salmon, Dolly Varden Trout and Arctic Char caught right at the lodge. Our hunting area is approximately 550 square miles (over 352,000 acres) in size. With an area this large we utilize up to 12 spike camps, located throughout the entire area. With over 120 miles of coastline, and 24 salmon streams, there are many great areas to hunt in this concession. This season was the 32nd year that I have owned, operated the Dog Salmon River Lodge and hunted this area. Thanks again to all of you who arrived as strangers and went away as friends, after sharing experiences that will never be forgotten.
