At 1305 on Friday 7 May 1965, RAAF Caribou A4-173, of RAAF Transport Flight Vietnam(RTFV),crashedatHaiYeninVietnam.HaiYenwasasmallfortifiedsettlementlocatedonthesouth-westerntipoftheMekongDelta,southofCaMau.

The pilots of the aircraft were Flight Lieutenant Dave Cooper and Flying Officer BrianHammond.DownthebackwastheloadmasterCorporalBarryIngateandassistantloadmasterLeadingAircraftsmanE.Massie.Ithadbeenabusymorningforthecrew.BarryIngatetakesupthestory:
“On7thMay1965IwasassignedtoA4-173todooneofthetwoso-calledmilkruns.This onewedid onMonday,Wednesday andFriday and involvedhaulingpax andfreight(alotofmail)aroundthedelta,leavingSaigonandhoppingfromplacetoplace(alwaysthesameplaces)andeventuallyarrivingbackatSaigonandthenbacktoVungTau.WewereonthereturnpartofthemissionandlandedataplacecalledCaMauwhereweweretoldwehadanadditionalruntodotoaplacecalledHaiYen,notonournormalrouteandaboutasfarsouthasyoucangointhedelta.TheVChadhittheplace thenightbeforeandkilledquitea fewpeople (Vietnamese)and theyneededcoffins.SoweloadedupwithwhatIcalledD.I.Y.coffins(astheyweremostlyinpiecestobeassembledlater)andafewpassengersandheadedsouth.HaiYenhadashortP.S.P.(PiercedSteelPlanking)strip(about900feetIthink)setinavastareaofricepaddyfields andmud. Itwas like landing on a small aircraft carrier and, like an aircraftcarrier, ifyou landedshortyouwere in trouble.Unfortunately,at1305that'swhathappenedandwetorethestarboardmaingear loose,camedownonthestarboardwingandbentitandthestarboardprop.Weeventuallycametoagrindinghaltnotquitefullyoffthestripandinthereedsandmud.No-onewashurtalthoughthepilotwasunderstandablyprettyupset.Anyway,IgottheaircraftunloadedandsecuredasbestIcouldwhilethepilotscalledbase(therewasasmallU.S.ArmypostatHaiYen)andarrangedforU.S.Armychopperstoliftusout.”
ExtractedfromUnitHistorySheets,theydepartedVungTauat0720and,afterloadingupwithfreightandpassengersatTanSonNhut(Saigon)theylandedatMocHoa,CaoLanh,KienGiangon theirway to CaMau. Coincidentally, thiswas to be the last day of operational flying in
VietnamforBrianHammondashedepartedforAustraliaon12Mayoncompletionofhisnine-monthtour.

Aninitialassessmentoftheaircraftindicatedthatitwouldhavetobewrittenoffandreducedtosparepartsasareplacementrightwingwasnotavailable.Workcommencedtobreaktheaircraftdowntospares.Inthemain,theremovedequipmentincludedradios,instrumentsandelectricalitems.Mostwiringloomswerecutratherthandisconnectedastherewasaperceivedneedto“getinandgetout”.
Fortunately,theinitialdecisionforwrite-offwasreversedbeforelargercomponentshadbeenremoved.RecoveryoftheaircraftbecameaviableoptionwhentheUSArmygenerouslyofferedtheloanofasparewingandtransportsupportthus,enablingtheaircrafttoberepairedinthefieldandflownbacktohomebaseatVungTau.Unfortunately,therewastobemoredamageinflictedon173priortotherecoveryteamarriving.CharlieDowneswasoneoftheHaiYenrecoveryteamasanAirframeFitter.Herecallstheevent:
“Beforeourarrival theyanksdidasupplydropofammunitioninboxes,andtheonlydropzone available was the runway. One box landed on the previously undamaged left wingleadingedge,nearthespar.ThedamagewasnotterminalandatemporaryfixwasdoneforthereturnflighttoVungTau”
Ithasbeensuggested that this incidentwasanembarrassment to theAmericanswhich ledthem to being so generous with spares and transport assistance. On Tuesday 11 May, acompositecrewofRAAFandUSArmytechnicalpersonnelwithsparesandnecessarygeneralsupportequipment(GSE)wasflowntoHaiYenbythe330thAviationCompany.RonFurzewasoneoftherecoveryteamthatday:
"TherecoveryteamwasflownonaUSArmySikorskyH-37MojavehelicopterfromVungTautoanintermediatestop(probablyCanTho)torefuel,andthe13-manteamwerethentransported by U.S. Army Iroquois from Can Tho to Hai Yen. The replacement engine,propeller and rightwingwere later transported toHai Yen as internal loads on anH-37………”

Rightwingremoved AllhandsneededtogetitoutofbogontoPSP
LoanedUSArmywingbeingfitted GeorgeMcLeanwithhammerandUSMarinetechs
Initially,therightwingwasremoved,theaircraftjackedandareplacementrightundercarriagefitted.UsingmanpowerandanArmytruck,theaircraftwastowedoutofthedraintoaPSPhardstand.TherightenginewasremovedandreplacedandasecondhandUSArmyCaribouwing, completewith USmarkings,was fitted. The electricians also had a big task rewiringcockpitinstrumentsandloomswhichhadbeencutaftertheearlierdecisiontowritetheaircraftoff.TheUSArmywingfittedperfectly,howevernotalltheancillaryfittingsmatchedup.Theaileronrunscouldnotbelinedup,sothetrimwaslockedinthe“bestguess”positionfortherecoveryflight.Thetechnicianswereunabletogettheflapsoperational,sotheywerelockedinthetake-offpositionandremainedtherefortheflightbacktoVungTau.Therightmainandnosewheelundercarriageswerereplacedandallwerelockeddownfortherecoveryflight.Therecovery teamwas required towork in theopenwithoutworkshop facilities. Interestingly,nearlyalltheairframeandengineworkwascarriedoutwithoutthereferencetopublicationsorthesigningofworksheets.Itwasamatterofgettingtheworkdoneasquicklyaspossibleand get out of there. They did exceedingly well to get the aircraft flyable in four days,particularlywhentheywereonlyallowedoutsidethecampcompoundtoworkontheaircraftbetween0800and1600eachday.
TherewasasmallUSArmySpecialForcescampbasedatHaiYencomprisingaroundtentroops.Theirroletherewastodirect,organise,trainandsupplythelocalARVNtroopsagainsttheVC.Therecoveryteamwereguestsofthecampduringtheirfivenightsthereandwereprovidedwith basic accommodation and the good old Army rations. Each morning, when the teamreturnedtotheaircraft,theyfoundoneortwobulletholes.Fortunately,theVCwereterribleshotsandthedamagewaseasilyrepairedwitha“penny”patch.

By Saturday afternoon, 15 May 1965, the recovery team deemed the aircraft sufficientlyairworthytobeflownbacktoVungTau,itshomebase.Nextmorning,FltLtRockyRockliff,theseniorRTFVengineeringofficer,arrivedbyhelicopterwiththeaircrewtoinspecttherepairsandgive technical approval for the recovery flight. CharlieDownes recalled the firstwordsRockysaidtohimafterarrival,“Will itflyCharlie?”.CharlieandJerryLathamwalkedRockyaroundtheaircraftpointingouttheairframeandenginerepairsthathadbeendone.Rockyhadapersonalinterestintheairworthinessoftheaircraftashewastobeonboardfortherecoveryflight.
Midmorning,sportingamixtureUSArmyandRAAFmarkingsA4-173liftedoffatHaiYenfortherecoveryflightbacktoVungTau.ItwasflownbySqnLdrDougHarvey,theCommandingOfficer of RTFV. Barry Ingate, the loadmaster on the flight of the accident, was again theloadmasteronthisflight.TheSENGO,RockyRockliff,andWOEGeorgeMcLeanwerealsoonboard.Mysteriously,theUnitHistorySheetsdonotindicatewhowasflyingintheco-pilotsseat.Withtheflapslockedinapartiallydownpositionandtheundercarriagealsolockedfullydown,itwasaslowflighthome.Thepilothadtomaintainconsiderableleftailerontokeeptheaircraftstraightandlevel.TheyhadtomakeastopatCaMauenrouteforarefuel.

Note US starboard wing markings Sqn Ldr Harvey later noted “Without the generous support and co-operation given by theUnited States Army, the aircraft would have simply been written off.” The SENGO, RockyRockliff,commentedthathetriedtorecommendseveraloftherecoverymaintenancecrewforawardsoftheBritishEmpireMedal,whichwastheonlysuitableawardavailableatthattime.However,onlyaMentioninDespatcheswereawardedtoFrankLathamandCharlieDownes.A4-173underwentmajorrepairsandoverhaulatVungTau,includingreplacingtheloanedUSArmywing.Fourmonthslater,on9September,theaircraftwasreturnedtooperationalflying.Unfortunately,theaircraftwastobeinvolvedinaverysimilaraccidentthirteenmonthslateratBaTo.ThemonthofMayhadnotbeenagoodmonthfortheRTFV.InadditiontotheHaiYenaccidenton7May,anotherunitCaribou,A4-171,sufferedseriousnosewheelundercarriagedamageatTanhLinhonthe13th. Itrequiredsignificantrepairs inthefieldandwasalsoflownbacktoVungTaubySqnLdrHarveywiththeundercarriagelockeddown.
