5.4. Preposition of time.

We use in for months, years, centuries and long periods:

seasons of the year: in spring/summer/autumn/winter - in the

spring/summer/autumn/winter

years and centuries: in 2008 - in the twenty-first century

months: in January/February/March etc.

parts of the day: in the morning - in the afternoon - in the evening.

We use on for days and dates:

days: on Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday etc - on Christmas day - on my

birthday.

dates: on the twenty first of July - on 15th June

We use at for a precise time:

at 4 o'clock, at 11.30 am, at bedtime

We can put time phrases together:

They were at home at about eleven o’clock last night.

The baby was born last week at seven o’clock on Monday night.
