Writing with Pictures

Want to spark some creativity? Give your students some pictures for a story then let their

imagination run wild! Not only is this book-making activity quick and easy fun, but it givesemerging readers insight into how a storys illustrations provide context clues, which will help

them the next time they are looking for hints while sounding out a word. Get a stack of old

magazines and get your students ready to write!What You Need:

5-10 pictures, cut from magazines

MarkersSheets of paper

Glue

Pen or pencil

What To Do

This activity is easy, but it takes about five minutes of set-up time. Gather a stack of magazinesand cut 5-10 pictures out of them. These can be as simple as a dog running in water, or a boy

sitting on a set of stairs.Glue each picture onto the top of its own page and spread the pages out across a table. Then

invite your students to come and take a look.

Ask them to choose a picture then tell whats happening in it. For example, if one of themchooses the picture of the dog running in the water, he might say, This dog is being chased by

its owner. They just came to the beach because theyre having a picnic. The dog is happy

because he loves to play and get wet. Whatever he says, he should write it down beneath the

picture.

Then invite them to read their short stories for the rest of the class.This is a quick and easy activity and it teaches students how a books illustrations and text are

related. It also gets them working on how to tell a story and order its beginning, middle, and end,

a skill that takes young minds a lot of practice! It also builds reading comprehension, but morethan that, it puts your students in the authors chair, a great place to be in order to build theirmotivation and confidence when it comes to writing in English.
