At the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, our work is to help grow local philanthropy. For many nonprofits devoted to addressing essential societal needs, philanthropy is often the primary source of funding. The growth of individual and corporate giving to help meet these needs has never been more urgent.
The Community Foundation’s work begins with our donors — individuals and companies — each with their own unique charitable interests. Many of those interests include and encompass the most pressing needs of our region. That is a happy coincidence. Every day, the Community Foundation helps connect the dots between a donor who cares and a critical community need. When we recognize and nurture a donor’s true interests, we encourage generosity, facilitate local giving, and help focus private philanthropy on the causes that matter.
The theme of this year’s Annual Report is “Growth” because giving through the Community Foundation is rising. This growth is strengthening our community and adding permanent value to our neighbors in need.
The highlights you will read about in this report showcase a few of the innovative ways we encouraged philanthropic growth during the 2010-2011 fiscal year. We established the Military Personnel and Their Families Fund to address the needs of our veterans. We launched the Future Fund, a giving circle for young professionals who are establishing themselves as the next generation of philanthropists. We participated in activities and grant making to help “move the needle” on childhood obesity, and we honored Booz Allen Hamilton, a leader in charitable giving and volunteerism in our region. In total, we supported 41 local programs with $341,819 in unrestricted grants, including a new multi-year grant to benefit Junior Achievement’s Finance Park in Fairfax. Hundreds of additional nonprofit programs received a total of $1,730,671 in grants from our donor advised funds.
To achieve this landmark growth in local giving, we increased our organizational capacity as well, adding a staff position in our grants and scholarships department, as well as a Vice President to oversee operations, donor relations and communications. We are growing the Community Foundation to help grow philanthropy—key investments to support our region’s future.
Northern Virginia is growing, and so is giving through the Community Foundation. Thanks to our generous donors, the Community Foundation makes philanthropic investments that impact lives, solve problems, and improve futures for thousands in our region. With your help, the Community Foundation will continue to rise to the challenge and prove that passionate, caring and dedicated philanthropy makes a huge difference in Northern Virginia.

2010-2011 highlightHealthy Kids GrantsA program funded by the Chin Family Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation
In April 2011, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia and Inova Health Systems
co-hosted “Let’s Move the Needle on Childhood Obesity,” a regional call to action.
More than 275 leaders and stakeholders from all sectors of our community — faith based,
education, nonprofits, healthcare, business, and government — came together to make
four hundred pledges to take action to encourage more activity or better nutrition for
our children.
The event featured remarks by Sheila Johnson, CEO of Salamander Hospitality and
President of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, J. Knox Singleton, President and CEO of Inova,
and Eileen Ellsworth, President of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia.
At this event, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia announced a new Healthy
Kids Grant opportunity for public schools in Northern Virginia. During the summer of
2011, the Community Foundation successfully launched the Healthy Kids Grant program
to improve the activity level and nutrition of kids in Northern Virginia. The grants were
made possible by a gift from the Chin Family Charitable Fund, a donor advised fund at the
Community Foundation. In May, we invited proposals from all public schools in Northern
Virginia, and 24 schools responded to the challenge.
Thank you to the Chin Family Charitable Fund and the Healthy Kids Grants Committee members Kathy May of Voices for Virginia’s Children, Whitney Strand of Inova Health System, and Mindy Williams of Access Point Public Affairs, LLC.

The Oakridge Vegetable Garden project is a “farm to table” program that teaches students at Oakridge Elementary School in Arlington to grow, taste, and enjoy fresh vegetables and fruits.
The Lady Panthers on the Move project for girls at Stone Middle School in Centreville combines fitness activities with skills for coping with adolescence, ending in a 5k run.
The Fairfax County Fitness Challenge gets 8th to 12th graders in the Fairfax County Interagency Alternative School system walking several times a week in teams, developing a healthy fitness habit.
The Active Learning: Keeping Kids Fit and Focused program has fourth graders at Glen Forest Elementary in Falls Church sitting on yoga balls instead of chairs, increasing kids’ fitness and shedding extra energy.
The Fruit and Vegetable Garden project shows students at Sterling Middle School how to grow and prepare vegetables and fruits, encouraging healthy eating, agricultural awareness and exercise.
By replacing chairs with stability balls, the Balance to Fitness project helps Battlefield High School students in Haymarket to improve their core strength and their ability to stay on task.
The Keep Active! Keep Healthy! program at Kilby Elementary School in Woodbridge helps kids learn to use pedometers and daily logs to meet their individual walking goals.
The Let’s Get Running! program allows girls at Potomac View Elementary School in Woodbridge to participate in Girls on the Run, a national program building fitness and healthy eating habits.
The Healthy Eating and Cooking Club teaches students at the Mary G Porter Traditional School in Woodbridge the basics of nutrition and healthy weight while having fun creating a meal for their parents.
The Crank that Move program uses an Xbox Kinect fitness system to help hearing-impaired students at Coles Elementary in Manassas to join in activities through feeling the beat and following visually.
Congratulations to all ten 2011 Healthy Kids
Grant winners! We applaud these grantees
for taking strides towards keeping Northern
Virginia’s kids active, strong and healthy.
3 THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR NORTHERN VIRGINIA 2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT
Grants of $1,000 each were awarded to ten innovative programs:
2010-2011 highlightEstablishing the Military Personnel and Their Families Fund
The new Military Personnel and Their Families Fund was announced in October 2010. In keeping
with the Fund vision, the Community Foundation focuses philanthropy from the Fund on the most
critical unmet needs of our service members, returning veterans, and their families. Grants from
the Fund therefore support:
The needs of military families, including support for military families while their loved
one is deployed or recovering from an injury, and help with the economic hardships that
often occur around a deployment,
Job training and job placement for returning veterans and their spouses, and
The health and general welfare of our recovering soldiers.
The Fund is already making a difference. The first grants from the Fund were awarded in December
of 2010, including $25,000 to Fisher House to benefit the Hero Miles Program which provides airline
tickets for the families of service members receiving care at Walter Reed, and $20,000 to the
Yellow Ribbon Fund to help provide lodging and ground transportation for families visiting service
members at Walter Reed while staying in the local area. Both organizations work closely with
Walter Reed staff, with whom the Community Foundation consulted on this process.
As with all grant making from discretionary funds at the Community Foundation, these grants were
awarded in a competitive RFP process by a volunteer committee convened by the Community
Foundation. The committee included volunteers from our community who care deeply about this
population and have a specific interest in and knowledge about the needs of our military personnel
and their families. The Fund has attracted endowed contributions totaling more than $523,000 to
date against a $2.5 million goal.

The Future FundFostering the Next Generation of Philanthropists
During 2011, the Community Foundation launched The Future Fund, a
giving circle for young professionals in Northern Virginia. Members of
The Future Fund connect with each other personally and professionally,
learn about the critical needs of our region, and give at affordable
levels to the philanthropic causes they care about—a unique and
exciting opportunity to pool contributions to benefit the community.
Donors to The Future Fund make a direct impact by participating in
collective philanthropy. On an annual basis, members choose a field
of interest or cause to benefit with their pooled funds. The grant
making process includes a request for proposals from nonprofits
working in the selected field, proposal review, member site visits
and presentations by the nonprofit finalists. All Future Fund members
vote online for the two winners, and an awards ceremony in the Spring
celebrates the supported organizations.
The Future Fund officially kicked off on May 20, 2011 with a festive black and white themed
Gala. More than 375 people attended. The Gala garnered much attention from the community
and was featured in The Washington Post, Fairfax Women magazine, and FACE magazine.

6 A YEAR OF GROWTH
As featured in The Washington Post: Foundation Converts Young Professionals into Young Philanthropists
“ The Future Fund is an effort the
Community Foundation launched
this spring after determining that
it needed to attract a much younger,
diversified donor base. ‘We’re a
diverse community of all ages and
backgrounds, and we think our
donor base should reflect that.’
says Sara Jaffe, the Community
Foundation’s Vice President.”
With more than 100 members on board,
The Future Fund had its first official
membership gathering in June 2011 to
decide which field of interest to support
for the 2011-2012 grant making year. After
moving presentations and lively discussion,
members of The Future Fund chose Child
and Youth Development as their focus, with
the Grants Committee taking a particular
interest in exploring youth leadership
programs. Members of The Future Fund
meet throughout the year to learn more
about the nonprofits working in this area
and award two grants of $25,000 each
to support them. The group also
participates in volunteer activities and
social and professional networking events
throughout the year.

BECOME A DONOR
Donors can establish funds during their lifetime or as a bequest in their will. Gifts can include cash, cash equivalents, stock, real estate, income from Charitable Remainder Trusts, assets from Charitable Lead Trusts, tangible and intangible property, and other planned gifts including bequests, retirement assets, life insurance policies, pooled income funds, gifts of property with retained life estates, and bargain sales. Choose a fund that works for you.
Donor Fund Options
Donor Advised Funds: For as little as $10,000 you can open a donor advised fund with the Community Foundation. Get an immediate tax deduction for your contribution, then continue to advise the Community Foundation on grant making from the fund. A Donor Advised Fund can be either endowed (limits the amount of grants to 5% of the fund balance each year) or short term (allows the entire balance, principal plus interest, to be granted out at any time).
Field of Interest Funds: By establishing a Field of Interest Fund you can target your gift to address needs in an important area of community life. Your gift stays flexible enough to meet community needs in your interest area — even as they change over time.
Designated Funds: When you open a designated fund at the Community Foundation you identify the organizations to whom grants will be given for the entire duration of your fund.
Scholarship Funds: Establish a scholarship fund with the Community Foundation and provide educational scholarships. With this type of fund you are investing in your community’s future and showing students you care.
Contact us at (703) 917-2600 or visit www.cfnova.org to become a donor today. Thank you.
