The Church has been celebrating Ordinary Time for a couple weeks now, but we actually haven’t celebrated
a single Sunday in Ordinary Time since before Lent. Easter ended weeks ago. And then we celebrated
Pentecost, followed by Trinity Sunday. And now, we celebrate Corpus Christ, the Solemnity of the Most Holy
Body and Blood.
This weekend, we are gifted the opportunity to not only celebrate the greatest of gifts, the Body and Blood
of Christ, but to focus in on it, give it special attention, and remind ourselves of just how immense this gift
really is.
The Eucharist is, first and foremost, the real presence of Christ. It is the reason our churches exist. In
non-pandemic times, we go to our parishes regularly and gather on Sundays and weekdays precisely
because of the Eucharist. It is the reason the altar is the centerpiece of the church, that sacrificial table in
which Christ becomes truly present in the bread and the wine that we consume. The Eucharist – our food
for the journey ahead.
Still, the mystery of the Eucharist can be a difficult one to understand. But, like the mystery of the Holy
Trinity, understanding the mysteries of God comes, not simply through study and reflection, but through
lived experience.
One of the best ways I’ve ever had the Eucharist explained to me came from a man by the name of Jim
Forest. Jim is not a theologian nor a priest, but a journalist and a biographer. And he wrote this story about
one of his favorite saints, Dorothy Day:
One morning, as Dorothy and her fellow Catholic Workers were serving from their NYC First Street soup
kitchen, a priest close to their community came to offer daily mass. Realizing after he arrived that he had
forgotten a chalice, the priest asked to borrow a simple coffee cup with which to consecrate the Blood of
Christ.
Begrudgingly, Dorothy offered him one.
Following the mass, Dorothy disappeared momentarily. Seeking her out, Jim caught sight of her through the
kitchen window.
She was knelt down in the backyard, digging a small hole.
As he watched, she slowly took the coffee cup out of her apron pocket, kissed it, and buried it in the ground.
“It was no longer suited for coffee,” Jim reflected. “It had held the Blood of Christ. And I learned more about
the Eucharist that day than I ever did from any book or any sermon.”
This gift of the Eucharist, freely given to us as food for our personal and spiritual journeys, is something
worth reflecting over. Especially right now, when so many in the Church were unable to partake of it on a
regular basis this past year. The importance of it, the utter magnitude of it, is something worth praying over,
something worth recognizing.

Let us pray for our beloved deceased, most especially for Susan Thorndike, whose funeral Mass was celebrated this past Thursday. May Susan and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Saint of the Month
MICA is in need of a few volunteers to help in their food pantry on Monday and/or Wednesdays (hours to be arranged.) Please be aware a background check is required and there is some lifting involved. If you would be willing to volunteer as a representative of St. Mary, please contact Mindy Clayton at 236-3923 ext. 101.
How can we listen for, and respond to, the call of God in our lives? What does it look like to be a disciple of Christ? These are some of the questions to be explored this summer through Discipleship Quads - a series of small group gatherings designed to help you grow in faith and fellowship with others. Participants will use the Discipleship Quad Guidebook created by Franciscan University to journey together with readings and reflections that we can then discuss and reflect upon as a group. God loves us more than we will ever know and he wants to equip us to share that love with others. If you're open to learning more, please contact Father Ross. Groups will meet throughout the summer.
The parish office is returning to its pre-pandemic hours. So, those hours are… Monday - Thursday: 8 am - 3:30 pm Friday: 8 am - 12:30 pm
“Man's salvation and perfection consists of doing the will of God which he must have
in view in all things, and at every moment of his life.”

Community Meals at Relish: During lunchtime on Saturdays, Relish is offering meals for our community. If you, or someone you know, is in need of a good meal, please know that Relish is providing these meals for free to anyone who might need it - they just need us to help them get the word out! Share this information with folks you know. Pick up meals and deliver them to those in need. One important note from Laura and Kamal - it is helpful if people call ahead and get a pick up time so we don't have them waiting in a line in possibly inclement weather.
Studies show that of those individuals reaching 65 years of age, 70% will need Long Term Care services at some point. The expense of Long Term Care can quickly drain the assets of those who are in need of those services, jeopardizing people’s assets that they have spent a lifetime accumulating. This presentation will give an overview of what Long Term Care is, how people pay for those services, why having a plan for Long Term Care expenses is vital to any well executed retirement plan, and how Knights of Columbus Long Term Care insurance works.

June 6, 2021 Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 Today’s gospel offers us Mark’s version of the Last Supper. We are reminded of how the event is placed firmly at the time of the Jewish Passover celebration. The words that we hear in the gospel are the same words we hear at every Mass when the bread and wine are consecrated to become the Body and Blood of Christ.
Discussion Questions (Elementary): Talk to your child about where these words are heard during Mass. Who says these words during Mass and why does he say them? If your children are old enough to receive the Eucharist, talk about how the Eucharist helps us to feel more connected to Jesus. Share with your children how you feel when you receive the Eucharist and ask them how they feel. Point out how important it is to have those feelings as often as possible, by attending Mass regularly.
Discussion Questions (MS/HS): Talk about how they can quiet their hearts before Mass so that they can be truly connected to Jesus. Encourage your students to think about these things as they quietly pray after they have received Eucharist: what are they grateful for; how can they go out and serve Jesus; how can Jesus help them in their lives.
